Mixed Martial Arts (Official Thread)

Kimbo wasn't ready to tap. He gave a freaking thumbs up to the ref :P.

I think Kimbo seriously destroyed James Thompson. Obviously Kimbo needs help on the ground, but in the third round, Kimbo absolutely RIPPED Thompson.

Thompson's ear freaking exploded, but even if there wasn't stoppage, I'm pretty sure Kimbo would have knocked Thompson the heck out. Thompson was one foot out of the door of consciousness.

Nasty ear, by the way... How does it get so bad??
Yeah, his ear was nasty as shit before the match. Why they didn't drain I don't know because James the joke Thompson was on his way to a decision win. Kimbo looked terrible, but luckily for him Thompson is even worse.

It is getting a little to old seeing Kimbo get all this recognition and be so terrible. I can say with confidence that I think every current title holder in the UFC would beat Kimbo.

I enjoyed the card for free. It's hard for me the fathom the people talking about some of the fights being stopped too early. Damn near EVERY single UFC card I watch there is a fight stoppage too early. Some of the time it's even the "main event". It's not so much of a debate other then the lawler fight.

Kimbo went to the ground and showed he had no clue what he was doing. It's still pretty humorous to see a guy with enough power to throw a professional fighter around on the ground. He was wore pretty badly by round three. I hear a lot of people on the net talking about the stoppage for this fight...Did you not see the guy take a shot at the ref? He didn't even know where he was at the time. His eyes crossed right after the last shot. It wasn't just because his ear was falling off.

If kimbo wanted to end this fight early. He could have stayed away from the ground and tore the guys head off,but he didn't,and nearly lost because of it.

Well, having had some time to sleep and think about the card, all in all I thought it was a pretty pathetic display. The first two matches felt like cannon fodder, "look, these guys can destroy each other in a minute" the Carano/Young fight was surprisingly good, even if Kaitlin Young was a piss poor sport after the match, at least you got to see people actually fight. The Lawler fight was great, but ended on a sorry note, and Kimbo definately failed to live up to the hype, I thought at one point, when he was on the ground just being hit that the refs could have called that fight, but seeing Thompsons ear explode was kind of amusing, though I thought it was a sorry way for the fight to end.

My real problem with the night was the Lawler fight, the fact that it was called before any decision could be made gave it the image of the WWE, to me this set the image of MMA back a few years in the eyes of the general public.

I disagree with the bolded statement. Thompson put his hands in the face of the official, but he didn't seem to be confused. He seemed, to me, to be pissed off that the fight was stopped despite the fact that he was on his feet and fighting back. Yeah, he took some shots, but he wasn't out on his feet by any means.

Well, I guess we all see different things but the guy definitely seemed to be out on his feet, his eye's were crossed, and imo, he was fortunate that the ref stopped it when he did, or he could have really got hurt with a few more shots to the head.

BTW - From the start of the fight it just seemed inevitable that the guy's bubble ear was going to pop if Kimbo landed a good shot on his ear.

MMA?s network debut mocks true sport

It sounded like such a good idea when the news broke a few months ago that CBS would broadcast a series of mixed martial arts cards in prime time.

But after watching its effort on Saturday?s Elite XC show from the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., the good news might be if CBS opts not to do another show.

These were supposed to be the professionals who would show the amateurs at the Ultimate Fighting Championship, who do their own production, how it?s supposed to be done.

And while neophyte play-by-play man Gus Johnson acquitted himself well and analysts Mauro Ranallo and Frank Shamrock didn?t embarrass themselves, the broadcast dragged on interminably.

Contd...

Great article.

Lat nights event was so awful, EliteXC is nothing but a joke. First off the match making was horrible, all the talented fighters available like Nick Diaz, Yves Edwards, Jake Shields, ect and they put together possibly the worst card they possibly could.

ROgers vs Murphy-Two pot bellied man boobed brawlers engaging in a sloppy minute of "fighting". Make no mistake about it this fight was made purposely to get a quick knock out on TV to hook the audience, it failed. The two looked like they had no skill and were swinging wildly, they did get the knockout but it was hardly impressive. So we got a minute of fighting for the first 40 minutes of the show, right away I knew this event would suck.

Baroni vs Villasenor-Another awful fight that lasted 1 minute, just garbage.

Carano vs Young-Carano didn't even make weight so she had an unfair advantage, but so what shes who Gary Shaw wanted to win so let them fight. Girls showed some heart but come on, this fight was decent at best.

Smith vs Lawler-It was funny listening to the announcers say the Lawler was one of the top 3 middleweights and Scott Smith was top 10 as well. I guess they forgot about Anderson Silva, Rich Franklin, and Dan Henderson running those 2 out the UFC. But oh well at least this fight was watchable of course until the ending, Smith was poked in the eye and wasn't given the customary 5 minute wait period to heal. Instead they suspiciously called the fight off. More fishy BS from EliteXC, but the best is yet to come.

Kimbo vs Thompson-the battle of the tomato can vs the untalented, over hyped, man with no stamina. It wasn't just one of the worst fights ever but a complete officiating debacle. Kimbo got so much help that it was disgusting. Thompson had a dominate position twice on Kimbo and was stood up in order to save Kimbo. Thompson then had Kimbo in a crucifix position landing elbow after elbow for two straight minutes all the while the ref threatens to stand them up if he doesn't do more. Granted the blows didn't have tremendous power on them but Kimbo was not intelligently defending himself. After the round ended his corner men even had to scrape his ass off the canvas. The bout then ended when Kimbo connected with 4 shots, Thompson was still standing and didn't even look hurt, he was more tired then anything. He even shoved the ref for stopping it, the ref never gave him a chance! In the second round Kimbo was hitting him with some shots to but Thompson came back, got the take down and dominated him. I'll call it now, the ref was paid off.

So if you like skanking strippers dancing, pot bellied brawlers, fixed fights then you'll love elite XC. If you like real MMA then watch Pulver vs Faber tonight on versus network.

Kimbo proved many of us right by proving he is nothing but a brawler. He was embarrassing on the ground and looked like he had never even been shown the basics. That fight embarrassed Elite XC/Kimbo/Bas Rutten/CBS etc. To those saying he is getting better on the ground, you are wrong. He was on his back damn near the whole fight and did nothing but get hit with the weakest elbows ever recorded. Kimbo isn't ready to fight a legit MMA fighter, he would be destroyed. The worst part is he is too old to get good enough to ever be a real MMA fighter. As for Elite XC I would imagine that entire card was their worst nightmare. The best fight of the night was stopped for no real reason, Smith was ok to go and to make it worse their golden boy Kimbo was exposed. All in all a horrible night for MMA, somewhere Dana White is smiling........

Can you read minds? Everything you put was exactly what I was thinking lol. Hell even an experienced boxer could put Kimbo away, he looks for big punches rather than combos, it will bite him in the ass eventually. I'd love to see Dana put Lesnar up against Kimbo, Lesnar would bloody Kimbo up on the ground. Hell Lesnar, (in only his 2nd MMA fight) had former UFC heavyweight champ Mir ready to tap due to strikes, Mir did get the W, but Lesnar's takedowns would completely negate the haymakers Slice would throw.

Almost any HW would beat Kimbo. And Dana has made it known he wouldn't pay shit for Kimbo, so that would never happen. And everyone who was there is saying Kimbo tapped during that guillotine.

In the post fight press conference, Brett Rogers, the fat ass who won the first fight and who had also whooped James Thompson's ass in his last fight, called out Kimbo and said he looked like garbage, and said he tapped.

Last night was my first time really watching more than five seconds of MMA. While last night's bouts may have been shit in the purists' eyes and understandably so, I think it was successful in that it will draw a shitload of new viewers to MMA. Personally, I read this entire thread today only because of what I saw last night, and I will watch the Faber fight tonight as well.

Basically, it may not have been pure, it may not have been legit, but I think it worked.

I am sure it worked as far as getting Joe-everybody to think about watching MMA, but like you said as a "purist" I think it was garbage. Too much of this mysterious stoppage crap, and as much as I love watching scantily clad women dance, it lends no positive impact to the fights. Watch the WEC tonight, you will be impressed with Faber/Pulver...hopefully.

Agreed. It may have suceeding in getting some new viewers, but from what I have read and heard, I excpect them to lose many more viewers for the bullshit that was last night's event. Although this may have been good in getting exposure for MMA, it was a terrible night for the Elite XC org.

If I wanted to expose someone to MMA I would show them old PRIDE Grand Prix and Bushido's.
