Mitchell Trubisky (QB Chicago Bears)

Mentor quarterback Mitch Trubisky's arm sets him apart: Hey, Tim!

Mentor's Mitch Trubisky. - (PD)

Q: Hey, Tim: So, Ohio State offered a scholarship to Mentor QB Mitch Trubisky? Is he that good, or are his stats inflated by Mentor's junk offense? Can he really be a starter at Ohio State?

-- Tim Cook, Ashley, Ohio

A: Hey, Tim: Trubisky, a junior, is one of the three or four best high school quarterbacks I've covered in 27 years. By the end of this fall, he might top that list. He has the size (6-3, 200) and the smarts, and enough quickness. He appears to be a good character kid who can lead without being a prima donna.

What sets him apart is his arm. He makes throws very few quarterbacks can. I've seen him throw darts into the wind 50 yards down field and connect to a guy who was well covered. I've frequently seen him thread the ball between linebackers on crossing patterns. I've seen him go Bernie Kosar and complete an awkward-looking sidearm pass at an insane angle. When Mentor lost its No. 1 receiver this fall, Trubisky never missed a beat and had plenty of chemistry with the other four.

He has issues, as his 18 interceptions attest, but that is correctable.

How does that translate to college? I'm not going to pretend I'm good at projecting a high school talent three or four years down the road. That's part science, part voodoo to me. If Urban Meyer thinks he can be a Big Ten QB in 2015, that speaks volumes more than what I can predict. But I do know Meyer has offered a scholarship to a kid who, at the high school level, gets it and has it.

I have no doubt Mitch will be a good college QB, but I can't help but think about John Brantley. For what Urban wants to do with this offense, how effective would Mitch be here?

Ask Alex Smith. We won't be running a fixed offensive system. Coach will design the system to maximize our talent, as he's done everywhere else he's coached. If winning requires being pass-heavy and delegating the power running role to a non-qb, fine. Besides, it's not like he's Tom Brady or Peyton Manning - he's definitely above average athletically and he can run when he needs to.

Regarding Brantley, the problem was UF didn't have any power backs to complement Rainey and the shifty backs they had. Urban's offense usually has both. Here, that should be no problem with Hyde, Smith, and now Bri'onte to complement Hall, Ball and whoever else we bring in

Mitch Trubisky: QB - Mentor (Ohio): I hadn't seen him before, so I came in with no bias, but the kid really surprised me with his athleticism. I can see why Ohio State offered, given what Urban Meyer will run offensively there. The kid is a great fit. He can throw it too though. He has a good arm, a live arm, and can get it downfield as well as throw on the run without losing velocity. He has some mechanical work to do, but the kid is impressive.

I like him ALOT more than I do Malik... If he were to run the ball more he would really be effective as a runner, but for me what sets him apart is he has thrown the ball a ton so far in his career and he does run a similar system to Urbans. I really hope we land Mitch because he is exactly the type of QB that does well in Urbans Offense. Fast and accurate.

Unless a kid looks like Braxton did in hs, don't really know what is good enough for Ohio State or Urban Meyer.

Saw Mentor once and Alter this year and watched both their highlights. This is what I see of the 2.

Trubisky has a strong arm, accurate, throws some dumb picks, good size, good athlete, elusive and strong runner. Couldn't care less about his delivery as long as it gets there, does seem to need to work on his mechanics and throwing off his back foot some.

Zaire is smaller, a better athlete, elusive and strong runner, accuracy concerns in an offense that doesn't throw the ball much, strong arm and can make some great throws, mechanics are good but a long delivery.

I do like Trubisky a little more as well but have minimal confidence in my QB evaluation skills.

Does the Mentor offense make it too easy for the QB? How bad are these mistakes he's making and why isn't he stepping up more against the best competition?

Don't know the answer to the questions. Trust Urban I guess. Then there's also Chapman who I haven't seen in a game and we have an offer out to Aaron Bailey as well.

QB recruiting interests me a lot this year. Sorry for writing a book, just felt like expressing a few thoughts.

That was not the problem with Brantley. The problem with Brantley is he was not a fit for that offense. Brantley is not mobile at all, he's a pure pocket passer.

Urban's offense requires a mobile QB. It is tailor made for guys like Alex Smith,
Tim Tebow, and Braxton Miller.

Rivals $ - Midwest QB talks UA offer

3/9

Alabama has offered...they want him to come down and visit and he might go for their spring game.

I imagine he and Zaire are both in the same boat when it comes to both Alabama and Ohio State...this is the difference between an offer and an OFFER.
