Minnesota Golden Gophers (official thread)

Just sayin': They use to be pretty good, i.e. back in the late 30s and early 40s:

AI Overview: The Minnesota Golden Gophers football team claims a total of 6 national championships in their history. These titles were earned in the years: 1934, 1935, 1936, 1940, 1941, and 1960.

The Gophers won three consecutive national titles from 1934 to 1936. They were also recognized as national champions in 1940 and 1941. Their most recent national title, a consensus one, was awarded in 1960.

Bernard W. Bierman (March 11, 1894 – March 7, 1977) was an American college football coach best known for his years as head coach of the Minnesota Golden Gophers football program. Between 1934-41, his Minnesota teams won five national championships (1934, 1935, 1936, 1940, and 1941), seven Big Ten championships (1933, 1934, 1935, 1937, 1938, 1940, and 1941) and had four perfect seasons (1934, 1935, 1940, 1941). Bierman's five national championships rank him among the greatest college football coaches of all time, as only Nick Saban (7) and Bear Bryant (6) have won more.

P.S. Woody is also credited with 5 National Championships.

Woody Hayes, 5

Hayes coached at Ohio State from 1951-78, winning his titles in 1954, 1957, 1961, 1968 and 1970. Hayes went 205-61-10 with the Buckeyes, won 13 Big Ten titles and famously battled with Bo Schembechler's Michigan in The Ten Year War.

They’re a nice program now that’s a consistent 8-4 team. They’ll be ready to play but they’ll lack to do much of anything overall. Particularly on offense they’ll struggle to move the ball but I expect their defense to be a very solid test for the offense.

Hopefully we wear black, come out throwing bombs and just have this one done by the 3rd.

Agreed. Their defense gave Rutgers some problems on Saturday. Of course, our Offense is a number of cuts above the Scarlet Knights, but Minny will play hard and has some talent on D.

Their defense has been subpar against subpar competition. Think someone said they rank in the 50s in points per play in the game thread. We should feast on it.

I will say I wasn't aware they are 9th in total defense, and 25th in scoring defense. But again they haven't played anybody good so. We will see.

It was me throwing out quick stats about them. Those ranks you see for Total D and Scoring D are why I rarely pay attention to "counting" stats in CFB (or anywhere).

Yards per play, points per play, rush yards per attempt, pass yards per attempt these things tell you a lot more.

Minny looks like a UW-ish defense with no offense to help them out. Worse yet, for them, their offensive strength (as it were) is passing. They are flat out bad at running it.

Point being when the offense stalls, it's likely going to be prone to giving the ball back quick. Even at his deliberate pace, that is likely going to be more plays for Day's offense to run.

Same preview all year for this OSU team: Don't help the opponent with turnovers and penalties and they should cruise.
