Minnesota Golden Gophers (official thread)

P.J. Fleck signed a new seven-year contract extension with the Minnesota Golden Gophers, according to a release from the school. Fleck’s name was previously floated in coaching rumors as the LSU and USC jobs opened up during the 2021 regular season.

The new seven-year deal keeps Fleck at the school through the 2028 season, pending Board of Regents approval. Fleck is in the middle of his fifth season with Minnesota.

"This is home," Fleck said in a release via the school. "Our family loves it here and we are excited to continue this journey at the University of Minnesota. From day one, we talked about cultural sustainability and how important it is to building a successful football program and life program. Today is another step in that process, and this new contract is a commitment to our elite staff and the entire state of Minnesota. Heather and I are so thankful to our staff, Mark Coyle, President Joan Gabel and the Board of Regents for trusting us to lead this program.

“Our goal is to recruit and coach at an elite level and to have our young people achieve academic, athletic, social and spiritual excellence. It's a tremendous honor to lead this program, and we will continue to work to build a culture that connects the entire state."

Just sayin': Did Fleck start the rumour that LSU and/or USC was interested in him?...

Anyway, Minnesota is now looking to row the fricking boat through the 2028 season.

Minnesota football: Jerry Kill reflects on return, P.J. Fleck claims 'utmost respect' for ex-Gophers coach

Jerry Kill made his return to Minnesota Thursday night, this time as the head coach of an opposing team. The former Golden Gophers coach entered Huntington Bank Stadium leading New Mexico State. It also marked his first return since he made some unsavory comments about current Minnesota coach P.J. Fleck.

Kill made headlines earlier in the week when he said he was not sure if he would shake Fleck’s hand. The two coaches ended up greeting one another — and shaking hands — both before and after the game Thursday.

"I'm just glad that my wife [Rebecca] was here, my granddaughter was here — it was a surreal moment," Kill said after the game, via the Star Tribune. "I've never been the same since I left Minnesota and never will be. So the people that don't like me or are disgusted with me or whatever – it doesn't change the way I feel about this place."

“I respect Jerry Kill wholeheartedly,” Fleck said. “I know you've all done broadcasts and I've never said one thing, ever, negative about Jerry Kill. In fact, in my opening press conference, I said I'm a Jerry Kill guy. Right? So what I told him at the beginning was, and I don't have to keep it between him and I because I told him, I said, "Thank you for all that you've done in my career. I've always had the utmost respect for you, always will." Simple as that.”
