Minnesota Golden Gophers (official thread)

Ski Utah something, something?

Surprised. I thought fleck was holding out for something bigger than a share of the Big Ten title which he already has albeit at MAC wage levels.
Probably sees Minny as a chance to build his resume in the weaker division of a Power-5, which is more impressive than the MAC. He puts together a couple 9 win seasons and wins a division title or two, bigger jobs will come knocking.

Underground tunnel system? That's pretty friggin' cool, actually.

Nothing special. Wright State has one if I'm correct. I can only imagine the quality happenings that take place in a University of Minnesota tunnel system.

Probably what happens under the boardwalk...

Minnesota (much like Michigan) had a pretty illustrious history early on in college football history. I would say they really dropped off the cliff in the mid 40's. They were very good in the 30's and early 40s. The 60s was more a blip on the radar. As college football gained more and more traction in the south and was less dominated by the northeast and midwest, their flow of talent never recovered. Michigan and Notre Dame realized early on that they would need to bring in talent from all points on the map. Minnesota (for whatever reason) never was able to make that transition. If you look at the map, they are really hampered on the talent front by their location. Unless they are able to magically construct a national recruiting program, they will never recapture their glory years.

I don't think they'll every recapture their glory years. Those days are long gone. There's no reason they can't win a Big Ten title more often than every 50 years though.

Ski-U-Mah (pronunciation: /ˌskaɪ.juː.ˈmɑː/, sky-yoo-mah) is a slogan used at the University of Minnesota since 1884.

U of M Rugby captain John Adams had heard Sioux boys yell "ski-yoo!" when they won canoe races on Lake Pepin. He incorrectly interpreted that phrase as the Sioux word for victory, or exultation and suggested it as a cheer for the University rugby team. A co-captain added the "mah" to make it rhyme with "rah" and created "Ski-U-Mah!" The slogan has been used to cheer on the Minnesota Golden Gophersathletics teams, and was written into the lyrics of University songs including the "Minnesota Rouser", "Go Gopher Victory", "Minnesota Fight" and "Minnesota March".

Humm, learn something new everyday ... I'm sure I'll forget about it soon enough. "Row the boat" Sure I'll hear enough of that in years to come.
