Mike Vick (Pittsburgh Steelers)

Jon Stewart on Vick: (Stewart's wife is a vet tech)
You know, Michael Vick, he's the Atlanta Falcons' quarterback? It turns out he's also involved in the "sport" of dog-fighting. He calls it a "sport"! I'd like to cover him with liver and let the dogs see if he's as fast and elusive as they say he is.

My guess is "no."

Pit bulls are very nice dogs, and I have to say, Michael Vick, being a two-sport athlete -- football and dog-fighting -- it's just not as impressive as the Bo Jackson thing.

I read 'vet tech', and actually thought for a second that was a term for a 'Virginia Tech' alumnus that I hadn't heard yet, before the 'veterinary tech' clicked in. :tongue2:

well it appears the NFL isn't going to suspend him yet, although I imagine that will be coming eventually. Vick won't get any jail time out of this IMO, I imagine his lawyer would plea out and he will get probation and a huge fine. Probably will end up suspended for this season and then cut by the Falcons. Joey Harrington at QB this year and maybe Brian Brohm next year.

I smell a vbet. I'm betting he won't get any regular jail time either... but rather, federal "pound me in the ass" prison time.

It's the deterrent effect. If Vick gets probation, other dog fighters will consider a criminal conviction to simply be a cost of doing business. If he gets prison, that sends a message.

The feds do plea agreements all the time. Vick's lawyer should be seeking one. Why should the feds give it to him though? I'm not saying that putting Vick in prison will bring an end to dogfighting, but it would certainly make a statement and Vick would be getting what he deserves.

I was really under this opinion as well until last night when I was listening to a defense lawyer who specializes in handling Federal cases. He was telling about how if the Feds indicte an individual and have as much evidence as they have right now, as well as all the publicity around this case and the cruelty of the acts that have been exposed over the last few days, it is highly UNLIKELY that he will get out of this with just probation. Hopefully he is smart enough to just plea this out and not take it to trial as I hear that when cases like this go to a Federal Court, it almost never turns out good for the defendant and appeals are rarely even heard let alone have decisions reversed. Look at Richard Hatch from Survivor, all he did was not pay income tax on his winnings from the show and he got 6 years. He decided not to take a plea of 1 year and 1 day. I can definitely see Vick getting at least a year out of this (out in about 9 months), possibly more.

"other dog fighters" aren't going to have access to the lawyers that Vick will. To think that doesn't make a huge difference is kidding yourself. It would be ironic if Vick gets jail time for killling dogs while OJ kills his wife and is walking around free. I don't know, I still think he gets off w/o any jail time. I second the vbet idea.....

Well theres a lot of aspects to this trial that I am sure Vicks lawyers will try to play. On talk radio there's already people crying this is a race thing so you can be sure the race card will be played. It's sad, but the reality of it is that whenever it can be played, the race card will be played.

One other thing that was already mentioned here, who flipped on him, rather how credible are they. You can bet that will be attacked as much as possible.

Also what hard evidence do they have? Pictures? Video? or is it just witness's accounts and are those witnesses trying to skate without going to jail or have sentences reduced?

Qyntel woods (Nba player) was accussed and found guilty on Dog Fighting and animal cruelty in 2004 and he all the got was 80 hours community service and had to donate 10k to the humane society. So why should it be different for vick? Just because he is more of a name?

Different league. NFL is cracking down on delinquents like Vick. Personally I hope he spends the next 2-3 years in jail which is the remainder of his viable NFL career. He'd have to be able to pass to make it longer than that. Maybe they can make another remake of The Longest Yard with the Vicks, MoC, and all the other football players that are in jail.

Were Qyntel Woods charges at the Federal level, and inclusive of Conspiracy and potential tax evasion resulting from illegal gambling?
He didn't cross State lines and it all happened at his home, right?

Ironically Qyntel claims as part of the plea bargain that he writes the column "Animal Kingdom" in which he clearly demonstrates a break with his dog fighting and abuse past - not!
Qyntel:
I was housesitting for a month last winter for my parents. They have two purebred chows - cute as heck, but such a pain! I?d let them outside for their business, but they?d never come back in! Every time I went to let them in (because they?d be @ the door, snorting & whatever), they?d run away. I even left the door wide open IN WINTER, and they still wouldn?t come in. My question: what kind of poison should I slip into their food?
? Antoine in Ann Arbor

Q: Antoine, you?ve got four real choices in the warfarin family of anticoagulants: broudifacoum, bromadiolone, diphacinone, and pindone. Bromadiolone and pindone are long-acting poisons; those chows could be slamming into walls and emitting haunting, guttural moans for three or four days, depending on dosage, and there?s no way you can play ?Madden? or have a cockfight in your basement with a couple of dogs puking everywhere. I like diphacinone: it?s quick, painless, and they sell it as ?Assassin.? That?s a cool-ass name.

Think he might have a less blase attitude if he actually had been given a more realistic sentence? You know, like the one which Vick will get.

see i dont understand it. You say its different because he plays in the nfl and not the nba? and woods only got 80 hours of probation instead of possible years in jail (as they are mentioning for vick) because he is a qb?
