Mike Vick (Pittsburgh Steelers)

First off let me start by saying that I have never said that Vick is guilty or innocent...What is wrong with saying that I am going to wait until everything comes out until I pass judgement...

I also will say that if he is convicted, he will no longer be my favorite QB and I hope that he gets put away for a couple years, just like his cousin...Dog Fighting is not something that I support in anyway and think that it should be punished with a felong like it is...

With that said, I also understand that Vick is a public figure, people are goign to try and run with stuff even with no substance if they have it b/c they know it will sell, much like the Clarett fiasco we had a couple years ago...There was all kinds of mud slinging and hoping that something would stick...There were also all kinds of people that were ready to give us the death penalty, for what a little 500 donation given to a player...

So with all that said if he is guilty, no longer my favorite QB, that will then be Joey Harrington...But if he is innocent all these posts and articles and everything smearing his name in the mud is going to be what everyone remembers, much like with the Clarett thing...Now when ever we get a recruit, there is talk that we must of done something dirty or we are known as tO$U...Why b/c of the way the media played the whole thing out...Is it fair, no...

Know then to this point, yes Vick did bring a lot of this on himself by giving the money and house to his cousin...That is what he should be held responsible for at this point, he has said as such that he needs to clean up what is around him, and that is true, and I think he knows this much hopefully and can take care of it...

Also as for him playing dummy and acting like he doesnt know is another thing that can be addressed, I know we had this discussion yesterday, but I don't think it is out of the question for him to not know that this was going on, I have cousins that I don't know what is going on with, in the NFL and NBA there are leaches and people that want to attach to you and get all they can get from you, b/c they know you have it and they feel you owe it to them for being related...The part that Michael needs to learn is to say no. I also think that there is possiblity that he did know and is not going to tell people that he did know, b/c that would link him to it...

And last but not least, if he is found innocent, no I do not think he should be suspended, after looking at it, it is not even close to being parallel with the pacman and Chris Henry situations...THey both had countless arrest, Pacman 10 and Henry 4 or 5...

How many has Vick had 0...He had a minor thing with the no fishing license, but I can tell you that there are many people that fish without a license, and is probably as common as speeding tickets, he payed like an 80 dollar fine, woopdy dooo...The water bottle thing, he was not arrested the bottle was conviscated, ran test on and then all charges were dropped, once again while his name took a drubbing in the media for having a water bottle with a secret compartment...We can make assumptions about what it was used for, but that doesnt mean that is what he used it for...Then last but not least the dog fighting thing...If he is found guilty he will be suspended anyway as he will be sitting in jail or prison, so that point doesnt matter, but if he is found innocent, there is no reason for suspension IMO, like some of you have been lead to believe...

Hope this helps you guys on my stance, also hope that the little violinist helps you guys sleep at night, b/c that really brings substance to the discussion...We will keep the thug part out of this as that discussion is for another place, and like usual any black athlete who is accused of something has the label of a thug...You would think that would get boring to some, and you thing some would of a wider mind to think of a different way to discuss the wrong doings of someone other than a broad sterotype of the word thug...

You keep balancing on the fence, do you believe him when he said he had nothing to do with this?

Not "do you think he's guilty" or "do you think he should be punished/villified".
like usual any black athlete who is accused of something has the label of a thug
Does his cousin fit that description?

Not that I need to explain myself, but my use of the term thug was not based on Vick's race. If a white player ran around giving women herpes..., you know the list of actual and perceived transgressions, I'd call him a thug, too. Perhaps you'd prefer I use "overhyped punk"? Would that be perceived as having racist connotations, as well?

What reason do I have not to believe him...I am an innocent until proven guilty guy, and there is no true evidence out there besides the fact that Vick's name was on the house, but that doesnt tie him to the dog fighting...

No...

So in the face of all of these rumblings, you find his testimony to be believable?

If you had to put everything on the line, your truck, possessions, girlfriend and bet one way or the other... would you bet on Vick telling the truth or lying?

I have already said I believe he will get suspended (guessing 4 games maybe) and that the evidence seems to be mounting against Vick but it amazes me all the hate for the guy even before this issue came up. The NFL hype machine builds the guy up as the next great thing he then performs reasonably well, but not to the status the league (and the Falcons) had hoped and everyone despises him. What is it that is so polarizing about MV? Is it the hype? Is it the way he plays? Is it the fact that he isn't the prototype? His image? Other than the flipping off incident (which I don't know why it would bother anyone but Falcon fans since it was them he flipped off) he hasn't been involved in anything too bad until the dog fighting arose. The herpes story was more of a joke than something NFL fans would get upset about I would think. I guess I don't get it. Atl.'s season may be over before it begins with news of Finneran tearing his ACL again for the second time in 10 months and the Vick escapades. Like I said earlier in the thread I was a Falcon fan before Vick and will be one afterward but this feels like the beginning of a loooooong season.

Turn that question on his head and you have the answer, imo.

What has Vick done to make himself respected/revered as a person? Respect has to be earned. Society (the mob) is a skeptical, cynical bunch.

What has he proven?
Dynamic athlete? Yes.
Respected passer? No.
Respeted person? No.

It's hard to respect an individual with a history such as his. Incidents like Ron Mexico, the finger & the dogs don't have to affect someone personally to impact the way they are viewed as a person.

Sorry, I don't buy that. He has been under the microscope as much as any player I remember before he ever even played a down. Why? The Ron Mexico thing isn't that big of a deal, no reason for all NFL fans to crucify him. The finger and dog fighting was too recent to be what turned "the mob" on him. The mob had made up their mind well before those two incidents ever happened. No one will like my reasoning so i won't even get started on that, just look at who likes him and who doesn't.

You're still attacking the other side without giving your side. Why should the mob respect Mike Vick?

Anyone who has the potential for greatness is scrutinized greatly. When someone is hyped as the QB of the future, and fails to pass as well as an avg QB of the past, it doesn't help things.

I don't care if they respect him or not. The bashing from everyone had gotten crazy before this incident. If he was involved to the level that people are saying in the dog incident then he will deserve whatever bashing he gets. Even when he led Atl. to the NFC title game people ripped his ability. I don't want to get into the stat argument again but the guys winning % is pretty good. No matter how he performed could he live up to the hype bestowed upon him? I don't believe so. What happens if a Vick led team does win the SB? Would he be called a great QB or would the comparisons to Trent Dilfer begin? I believe it is the latter and it seems a little hypocritical.

You obviously do care, or you wouldn't be questioning and defending his detractors.

I don't hate Vick. Look back into this thread. I didn't think he was a choir boy beforehand, but after the finger incident I lost all respect for the guy.

I have plenty of respect for his athleticism & dangerous ability. When it comes to passing ability and character (image), he has given me far more reason to disrespect him in those arenas.

Is a winning percentage enough of a reason to respect Vick in his entirety? Are there any other reasons to respect Vick?
No matter how he performed could he live up to the hype bestowed upon him? I don't believe so.
The same can be said for Lebron, but the casual fan does not hate him. Many overly mock his failures, much like Peyton (before this year), ARod or McGrady.

Why does it seem hypocritical? The same is said about other QBs, like Grossman, b/c people question his ability as a QB. The same is true for Vick, who is an inconsistent passer & leader.

I really don't care about respect, I just don't understand all the venom before this. I don't have any respect for Winslow, TO, or the team of criminals know as the Bengals but I don't care enough about any of them to post a bunch of nonsense in their threads. Why is this thread 62 pages long? I know you specifically are not the biggest of MV haters and I understand you saying you lost all respect for him, I have no problem with that. A half hearted apology didn't do much for me either. What I really question is if people even know what they are talking about, I doubt many on this board have seen enough Falcons games to actually form an educated opinion. Seems like a lot of guys point to his stats without seeing the games. Goes back to cbf40 and I ripping the WR's for dropping a ton of balls this season and people not watching the game saying Vick is inaccurate. MV is not a top 5 QB in this league no matter how much he is hyped, why can't it be left at that?

Mainly it's 62 pages long because a certain clueless few like to pretend the guy is on the way to the HOF and it's fun to point out how wrong they are.

Plus, this thread was started out as a rip on the idiot (by a poster who is no longer with us.) I think it was changed to his "official" thread as this was the first one around.
