Report: Falcons will try to recoup signing bonuses from Vick

The Atlanta Falcons will attempt to reclaim $22 million in bonuses already paid to Michael Vick, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Saturday, citing an unnamed source with knowledge of the team's plans. Vick was suspended indefinitely from the National Football League on Friday, hours after he filed a plea agreement with federal prosecutors in which he admitted to bankrolling a dogfighting operation. The suspension clears the way for the Falcons to pursue bonus payments already made to Vick.

Vick finally gets into a jam he can?t escape
Sunday, August 26, 2007

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) ? Michael Vick can only hope he will get more leniency from the judge than he did from the NFL.

Roger Goodell?s letter informing the Atlanta Falcons quarterback of his suspension reads almost like a goodbye, the NFL commissioner doing nothing to hide his disgust and his disdain.

A similar reaction by U.S. District Judge Henry E. Hudson, who will be presented with Vick?s plea agreement on Monday, could mean years in prison.

In court papers, Vick admitted bankrolling ?Bad Newz Kennels? and participating in the killing of dogs in the dogfighting operation. But he tried to deflect much of his culpability in the grisly enterprise onto his friends.

Vick set to plead guilty today in dogfighting case
Monday, August 27, 2007

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) ? His NFL career already in tatters, Michael Vick must now wait to find out the full impact his legal troubles.

The Atlanta Falcons quarterback was expected to formally enter his guilty plea to a federal dogfighting conspiracy charge Monday. Then, it?s up to U.S. District Judge Henry E. Hudson to decide whether to accept it.

Capping one of the most rapid and startling falls from stardom in U.S. sports history, Vick will make official the agreement his attorneys worked out with prosecutors.

In his written plea filed in federal court Friday, Vick admitted helping kill six to eight pit bulls and supplying money for gambling on the fights. He said he did not personally place any bets or share in any winnings.

A second chance that should ? and will ? be a long time coming
Monday, August 27, 2007
By JIM LITKE
AP Sports Columnist

Would the public be clamoring just as loudly for Michael Vick?s head if he?d come clean after being caught with a suitcase full of illegal steroids? Or cocaine? Or beating up a woman?

Just asking.

Because in all those cases, depending on aggravating circumstances and a number of other factors, the fine and jail time Vick would face after pleading guilty ? in his case, to a federal dogfighting conspiracy charge ? could be roughly the same. In terms of what else Vick stands to lose, it isn?t even close.

Crowds (Pro and Con Vick) Gather in Atlanta:

Vick hearing draws an early crowd
Protesters, supporters gather outside Richmond courthouse

By JEREMY REDMON

Richmond, Va. – Michael Vick's supporters and detractors showed up early here this morning to see the Falcons quarterback plead guilty in his federal dogfighting case.
Steve Stanaway stood in line to get into the federal courthouse, wearing a black T-shirt with the words "My Dog Hates Michael Vick." His Chihuahua, Dinky, hung by his side, barking.
"He is a thug. That is the best thing I can say in public," said Stanaway, a pipe-fitter, who graduated from the same high school as Vick in Newport News. "I have other words but I can keep them to myself."

OK - pipe-fitter with a Chihuahua called Dinky? Just saying - it sounds, odd.
Well, it's not the size of the dog ....

Plead Guilty earlier this morning and has a news conference (himself) here in a few minutes 11:30AM Eastern Time. I'm sick of these analysis's on ESPN before his conference who are saying that most of this is because he is black, how he is dressed, and how he acts.

Sentencing is December 10th.

In his press conference, Mike apologized to everyone, accepted responsibillity, said he has found Jeses, and that he will redeem himself.

Very well done statement by Vick. I was actually looking forward to ripping his statement apart, and he didn't give me any material to do so. Aside from the typical criminal accepting Jesus portion of his statement.

He will soon be accepting offerings from Bubba.

Welcome to PMITA prison Mr. Vick.

I agree but any discussion about Vick is always going to center around race, just like it always has. Listening to some of the banter the last few days, some of the black media and talk radio guys say that white fans are just bitter because they're jealous, and some whites say well blacks just can't admit any of them ever do anything wrong, or that they should be punished for it. Now of course these 2 extremes represent a very small minority of the population, but the discussion usually centers amd starts there (whether it's his crime, or they type of QB he is, whatever) and then trickles down. Discussions about other QBs (McNabb, Leftwich, etc.) don't always head that way, at least completely, but Vick has always been at the center of the racial athletic firestorm.
