Leach claims Tech officials conspired to fire him

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) -- Attorneys for Mike Leach claim in new court filings Friday that a day after signing a new contract last year a top Texas Tech administrator and two members of its board of regents "secretly agreed" to fire him before the school had to pay him an $800,000 bonus.
Information in the documents was drawn from depositions and electronic communications between university officials that Leach's attorneys have gathered in his lawsuit against the university.

Leach was fired Dec. 30, two days after he was suspended following a claim from the family of receiver Adam James that the coach mistreated the player after he got a concussion.

Leach has denied he mistreated James and said he suspects the $800,000 bonus he was to have received Dec. 31. was the reason he was fired.
Tech attorney Dicky Grigg said Friday's filing shows despair.

"Today's action by Mike Leach and his attorneys is another absurd act of desperation," he said in a statement. "This is the legal strategy one deploys when the facts and the law are irrefutably against him."

According to the court filings, on Feb. 20, 2009, it was discussed "that TTU would obtain the benefits of Leach's performance but chisel him out of his compensation."

"Infuriated" by Leach's conduct during contract talks, Tech Chancellor Kent Hance and regents Larry Anders and Jerry Turner "secretly agreed" they would terminate Leach "at the appropriate time," the filing states.
It also adds Craig James, Adam James' father who is an ESPN analyst and former NFL player, and several university officials and regents as defendants in the lawsuit.

Leach's attorneys also claim that Hance twice told the attorney investigating the mistreatment complaint to change her report because it was "too mild" and "too milk toast," court documents show.

Also, the filing accuses the university of not following guidelines of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in that it allowed Hance and two regents to be involved in Leach's contract negotiations last year and in the investigation of Adam James' treatment by Leach.

The rumor before the beginning of the year in the Big 12 was that Boone Pickens wanted him and he isn't a fan of Gundy. If Gundy was to slip up, he was going to put his big pile of money in place to push Gundy out and bring Leach in.

Former coach Mike Leach sued ESPN and a public relations firm Wednesday, accusing them of libel and slander after he was fired by Texas Tech amid charges that he mistreated receiver Adam Jones, the son of ESPN college football analyst Craig James.

The suit filed in Texas district court claims the network's coverage of Leach's firing last year was "willful and negligent defamation" and that it failed to "retract false and damaging statements" it made from "misinformation" provided to ESPN by Craig James.

Mike Leach is going to be the next head coach at Maryland, a key Big 12 source told Orangebloods.com.

When Maryland coach-in-waiting James Franklin took the Vanderbilt job last week, it apparently spelled the end for current Maryland head coach Ralph Friedgen in the mind of new Maryland athletic director Kevin Anderson, my source said.

Maryland (8-4) faces East Carolina (6-6) on Dec. 29 in the Military Bowl presented by Northrop Grumman. And after going 2-10 in 2009, Friedgen was named the ACC Coach of the Year by the 61-member Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association for this season's turnaround.

But when Maryland AD Kevin Anderson was asked about Friedgen's future last week, he told reporters, "Next week, everyone will understand where we're going."

The last seven seasons the Fridge is 23-31 in-conference.

That is after starting off 19-5 in conference his first three years.

The ACC conference battle is not exactly a juggernaut of a schedule.

Time to go, really. Their one great BCS Orange Bowl appearance in 2001 was when Rex Grossman, UF and The Ole Ball Coach set Orange Bowl records for most points scored. Other than that.....

Still, it's fucking Maryland...and they were one game away from playing in the ACC title game this year and it looked like he had it completely turned around after last year...they also beat Navy, which a lot of people forget. Didn't he also win ACC COach of the Year? I don't get this move, other than thinking the Mad Pirate will bring more "exciting" football than the Fridge. But then again, looking at Leach at TT, he didn't do much more than Fridge has done at Maryland there either. To me this was a stupid move...when they go 4-8 next year they are going to look pretty fucking stupid.

The ninja formation is still lurking around back there, and I would expect to see it sometime in the future. I can't tell you exactly when because that is strictly classified.

Well, obviously it was a banner year for them, but seriously, Maryland was in the crapper before the Fridge, and this reminds me of Mason getting canned by the goofers.

Vandy is hardly a better job than Maryland. The ACC is much easier to win than the SEC - For Vandy to even win their division, Florida, Georgia, Cocky and Tennesse would all have to have post-season bans, and Kentucky would have to have a down year, by their standards.
