Mike Leach (HC Mississippi State, a National Treasure, R.I.P.)

So Feldman, who has been Tweeting and Blogging multiple times every day since the invention of Twitter and Blogs, abruptly stopped doing both on Jul 13, but he was not suspended?

That is sooooo weird!

FWIW, Feldman is a highly respected writer. Feldman, Olney, and Neyer were the reasons I signed up for Insider years ago.

The response on Twitter over the past 48 hours is why this reversal happened.

A sampling:

WhitlockJason - What have you done today to show support for Bruce Feldman? I'm talking mostly to journalists. We can't let this stand. #freebruce

richarddeitsch - For the record, I would support ESPN suspending Woody Paige indefinitely.

richarddeitsch - Some notes on @BFeldmanESPN: First, he is an exceptional reporter and a standup guy. And someone who helped build ESPN.com

richarddeitsch - Second, I've never heard a single person in sports journalism say one bad thing about @BFeldmanESPN. That's why you are seeing this support.

richarddeitsch - Third, I have emails into ESPN about the @SPORTSbyBROOKS report. I can't confirm every detail he has. The gist appears to be true.

Andy_Staples - Can't sleep. Still mad. By the way, call this number to cancel your ESPN Insider/Mag subscriptions. 1-888-549-ESPN #FreeBruce

DanWetzel - If only Bruce Feldman had let someone else write the Leach book then plagiarized it, might have been promoted #FreeBruce

robneyer - Thinking about an essay titled, "How I got suspended by ESPN". Anybody interested? #FreeBruce

slmandel - ESPN suspended a fine journalist to protect an announcer who spews cliches every Thursday. ESPN thinks you're stupid, America. #FreeBruce

Matt_HayesSN - At some point in the entire Leach affair, didn't someone at espn bring up the fact that, you know, the source is *Craig James*? #freebruce

There was also this from DP on the radio yesterday:

And this response from Mike Leach on Sirius:

Truer words were never spoken.

ESPN is the latest embodiment of the axiom, "Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely." They are the only show in town, so there are no checks or balances in the free market for what they do.

They wish...

They have behaved as if they are the only game in town; and because of that Fox Sports and the B1G Network have eaten significantly into their market share. Now they have Multiple Personality Disorder, shifting from monopolistic arrogance to "you-took-MY-market-share" temper tantrums seemingly at random.

The recent flap over Bruce Feldman's non-suspension for writing a book on behalf of a guy now suing ESPN for libel has been characterized as (A) a Twitter revolution, (B) an ESPN house of cards, (C) Twitterati gone wild.

An ESPN writer trying to be "non-bias" and trying to cover the corporate thugs actions. I personally like the part where uses the company being "so big" that communication is "difficult" which is why no one at ESPN gave Feldman any warning or restrictions regarding the books publication, but also said "but he didn't ask anyone either!"

I also noticed how Mickey disabled comments...

Any chance ESPN will not renew the contracts of Craig James and/or Joe Schad upon their completion?

I'm guessing the network may want to part ways with James just based on conflicts of interests and/or bad publicity. But Schad was pretty much just being the puppet he is during the Mike Leach situation (saying what ESPN tells him to say on any story).

I don't pay attention to ESPN, but wouldn't care if either was gone (especially since Schad botched Tyler Moeller's story a few years ago).

Can't tell which one was worse (in terms of ESPN drivel): The Ohio State Alamo Bowl Game or the post-Mike Leach Texas Tech Alamo Bowl Game.

I just finished reading Leach's book and would highly recommend it. The ESPN stuff is worth it alone, but the rest of the book is highly entertaining. I'll be pulling for Leach wherever he ends up; just hope he's not coaching against the Bucks every year.

The most honest man in college football

:slappy:

He is probably correct here:

So Leach hates all of ESPN?
Not really, not at all actually. He believes a lot of good journalists work at ESPN. He wrote Swing Your Sword with one of them which, come to think of it, is not a good example at all. Leach is still pretty hacked at the way Bruce Feldman was treated when he had to resume his duties after not being suspended. In Leach?s mind, it makes his point about unchecked power.
?What is all that stuff you learn in journalism school? Don?t tell the story, let the facts tell the story,? Leach said. ?With two notable exceptions, ESPN reporters I have dealt with have integrity."
The problem, as Leach sees it, is when the facts bump into the agenda of the World Wide Leader. He feels like reporters have facts yet have to ask themselves, ?If I write that, will my bosses be mad? Will I get in trouble? What is the agenda? Do I have to move this around so they?ll be pleased??
And he definitely feels like this happened with ESPN's reporting on the Adam James deal.

If you get a chance, listen to his radio show. He and Jack Arute do a good show. It's on Sirius / XM, and I forget the channel number. (It's preset number 5 on my radio, so I don't need to know the number.) Same channel as Bill King's 24/7 Sports, Rivals Radio, and Paul Finebaum. Anyway, Mike Leach does an awesome job of telling it how it is.

Oh yeah - noon to 3:00pm, eastern time. He's on most days, but not all days. I think Fridays he often is traveling - isn't he a commentator for some channel on Saturdays? He might even do a post-game show Saturday evenings or Sundays or something, but I've never caught it.

Is Mike Leach on the list of candidates at New Mexico? The answer seems to be a resounding yes. Within minutes of releasing the statement that announced the firing of Mike Locksley, New Mexico AD Paul Krebs texted his qualifications for the new coach. Head coaching experience is strongly preferred. Ability to recruit in Texas is a virtual must. Also, ties to the Albuquerque area will be considered. Leach qualifies for all three. He spent a decade at Texas Tech recruiting Texas. Lubbock qualifies as having area ties. It is 320 miles from Albuquerque. Don't sleep on this situation. New Mexico's interested. Is Leach?

A school like New Mexico is so beneath this guy. I mean, this guy was a game away from playing for a national championship. He doesn't have to sell himself short just to coach. The right place will open up for the guy.

Of course, with ESPN's imposed smear campaign against the guy, many schools may not want to touch him. Also not lost on many schools is the fact that he sued the school (justifiably, of course).
