Mike Dontonio (get off my lawn!!!)

Too bad, I missed this play Saturday. From the Dispatch article above.

On Saturday, with Michigan State leading Notre Dame 24-14 late in the third quarter and facing fourth-and-2 at the Irish 30-yard line, Dantonio signed off on a fumblerooskie play that produced the final score in the Spartans' victory. Quarterback Brian Hoyer appeared to fumble as he dropped to pass and his teammates yelled "fumble!" as he duped the Irish into thinking he was trying to recover the ball on the ground. Hoyer suddenly straightened up and threw a touchdown pass to tight end Kellen Davis, whose defender had swallowed the bait.

Funny stuff too. The guys at MZone have been ripping Detroit Free Press writer Drew Sharp for years. Drew comes out of the woodwork every autumn to write negative pieces about UM -- he wrote something on the order of four columns in two weeks when UM dropped two games this year, but hasn't published one since the Notre Dame game. Well, with UM apparently headed back in the right direction, Sharp wrote a piece this past weekend lambasting Sparty and particularly the fumblerooskie play, with a long diatribe about how it was indicative of Sparty being Sparty, nearly fumbling the game and the season away.

You would think Drew Sharp might have bothered to attend the post game press conference, or at least acknowledged that it was a designed play. No comments since, and obviously no retraction.

Of course, Drew is probably busy penning his opus in the defense of Jenni Carlson right now, since these press poseurs apparently take a blood oath at journalism school. :roll1:

Uh, Mark...

Coach Mark Dantonio said Michigan State's rivalry with Michigan is more "intense" than the one between Michigan and Ohio State.

"You have players from this state playing against players from this state," he said. "You have coaches that have to deal with the recruiting aspects. I believe, having been in both, that it is a little more intense up here from that perspective."

Dantonio was an assistant at Michigan State for six seasons before serving as Ohio State's defensive coordinator from 2001 to 2003. He returned to East Lansing in November to replace John L. Smith as coach.
"The Ohio State rivalry is one that nationally is greatly respected," he said. "But from my standpoint, being at Michigan State, I know how I feel."

I think this is just one of those moments where he says to himself..."im a Spartan now. I have to say and do things to help my program, even if I honestly don't believe it."

I mean cmon, whats he supposed to say?

Majority of the coaches out there will say that [insert 2nd rate rivalry] is "bigger" than Ohio State / Michigan.

Now, every single one of those coaches would be wrong, but thats another story.

Having lived in seven different states I can tell you; everywhere you go, the sports radio guys compare their rivalry to OSU/scUM. A varying number from place to place will tell you their rivalry is bigger, but they all make the comparison to OSU/scUM.

Which, in and of itself, means...well...you know what it means.

Mark embraces the Tressel doctrine

Detroit free press

EAST LANSING -- Last December, at the all-state football banquet at Ford Field, Mark Dantonio paused in the middle of his speech and turned to his right.

According to the Tressel Doctrine, you must embrace your biggest rivalry; you must be willing to discuss it from January to August, and you must never complain about the hype or emphasis on this one game.
Dantonio didn't have to change a word of the Tressel Doctrine. No need to cross out "Michigan" and replace it with something else. Like Ohio State's Jim Tressel, Dantonio serves a fan base that wants to beat Michigan first, last and always.
Of course, MSU has lost five straight to U-M. How will Dantonio broach that topic with the Spartans?
" 'How long will we continue to bow to the University of Michigan?' " Dantonio said. "How's that?"
Pretty good. Very good.

Mark Dantonio has led Michigan State to its first bowl since 2003 in his first season as coach.

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Just 13 months ago, Michigan State looked like it was in free fall.
The Spartans had just finished their third consecutive losing season after dropping eight of their final nine games. A few players were in legal trouble for off-field incidents. Coach John L. Smith had been fired.
These days, however, the team's future looks brighter.
Here they are, in Orlando, enjoying their first bowl trip since 2003, preparing for Friday's Champs Sports Bowl against Boston College.

Continued......

It is good to see Sparty with more discipline and toughness things I had no doubt coach Dantonio would bring to the table. Hopefully he can get MSU going (save one week a year:biggrin:) and help a resurgent B10, and be a thorn in rr's side.
