Michigan Coaching Speculation

Les Miles just came on SportsCenter and very adamantly said that he was NOT going to Michigan and was going to stay coach at LSU.

Don't put words in the man's mouth Adam. :wink2:

He did not say he was going to stay at LSU.

What he did say has been quoted here - along with his refusal to take ANY questions at all following his brief statement.

Actually he said he is coaching LSU, will coach LSU and has a game to play. Technically he can coach the next game and leave for scUM and still have been true to his word.

He absolutely said nothing of the kind. It was complete double speak.

I could muster a heartier laugh at his plight had I not watched Matta make the same stumbles while at X.

The comical part is that the press knows where things stand and knows the coach can't give them the answer they want but persist in asking the question as many different ways as they can think of to provoke more and more controversial answers.

Every coach has the same right to consider a job change as any of us. And just like us they don't want anyone to know until they have accepted the new position.

Let him coach his games.

Well, not really. Not Miles anyhow.

All Miles had to do was say, "I will not be accepting the head coaching job at Michigan." Or, more consisely, "I will be the head coach at LSU next season." He did neither. He has not yet signed the "agreement" with LSU. This is far from over...

to me, he looked shifty, uncomfortable, and defensive. the words came out of his mouth weren't saying the same thing as his body language (especially the "you got a problem wit dat" arm pump towards the end). reminiscient of the famous, "i did not have sex with that woman..."

I took his presser more as a shot at what I'd think he feels is a meddling media for "creating" a lack of focus for his team the morn of his team's SEC Championship game.

I mean, if I'm a coach, and I'm getting ready to coach my team to a championship and the media comes out and says essentially, he's gone come tomorrow, I'd be pissed. That, of course, doesn't mean I'd go running to the media in the middle of the day to express my dissatisfaction, but I can see where someone like Miles might. I mean, really... it's in his character to do something like this, don't you think?

If he REALLY was not going to take the Michigan job, if he REALLY was going to stay at LSU and he was as "pissed" as he appeared to be, why wouldn't he just say

Look, people, lets put this to rest. I am staying at LSU, end of discussion. I WILL NOT BE ACCEPTING THE MICHIGAN POSITION. Please, let me prepare for this game tonight. I'm a man! I'm 40!

Or some thing.

Exactly, there is no shortage of unequivocal statements Miles could make - with no wiggle room, no shading possible.

In my experience people actually do say what they truly mean, even when they are trying to deflect unwanted inquiry. Miles, I think, did exactly that today. This thing is still in play in one way or another. He simply wishes to play today's game today, then handle tomorrow's question on Sunday.
