Michael Irvin (official thread)

Skin color? There are a lot of factors in this story. Race isn't one of them.

Bull ... fucking ... shit. If you truly feel that ESPN isn't giving him extra cushion because he's black then evidently you were sharing the pipe with Irvin. If this were a previously-convicted white guy found with drug paraphernalia in his car, he'd be gone by now. ESPN just doesn't want to deal with the Jim Browns and the Jesse "Where da white women at?" Jacksons of the world...

I don't want to apply any rules to ESPiN "talent" don't apply to Ohio State. I didn't like being prejudged and I won't judge unfortunate souls like Michael Irvin or "Mumbles" Holtz prior to them being found guilty.

So, let's have an open and transparent investigation and let's see ESPiN report all of the allegations doing the rounds. Perhaps Mr Irvin could help us by providing his own urine and blood test results?

Oh, but wait, Mumbles was found guilty. My bad. Let me think about this some more....

For some reason I feel this phrase from the new report just begs to be done up in a Fark of some kind..

Its The Irvin Family Thansgiving Vacation .. a friend arrives at his door...

Irvin said he found the items on the friend after patting him down when he arrived at his house in Carrollton, Texas.

Too damned surreal. Assume the position.

Wonder if his friend gets the full cavity search next time he turns up for New Years.

I don't think that is necessarily the case. If he stays (which may now be in jeopardy), it is completely possible they are just turning their head b/c he's a star of the show. He doesn't have to be black to get preferential treatment. Lou Holtz has left program after program in shambles with violations, yet they employ him as a figurehead every satuday.

I think that your assertion is not a wild one, b/c that sort of thing does happen. I just don't know that it has to be about race, when his celebrity could override it as well.

It is being reported by ESPiN that Irvin is off the NFL shows this week...interesting to see where they go with it from here.

Correct. Link

ESPN suspends Irvin for a week
Network upset broadcaster didn't report arrest

DALLAS (AP) -- Michael Irvin says he has been suspended by ESPN for one week for not telling the network about his arrest last week, when police found a drug pipe hidden in his car during a traffic stop.

Irvin, who has maintained that the pipe belonged to a friend, told The Associated Press on Thursday that he won't return to the air until Dec. 11. He was arrested Friday in Plano, Texas, for an outstanding warrant on an unpaid speeding ticket but was charged with misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia after police searched his car.

ESPN did not learn of Irvin's arrest until reporters began calling the network Sunday night. Irvin said he didn't tell the network about his arrest because he was scared.

"I was just scared, hoping and praying that maybe it would go away," Irvin said. "I was told that I paid the fine and it was over. I was hoping it was over."

ESPN spokesman Josh Krulewitz said the network doesn't comment on specific personnel records. On Monday, the network had said it expected Irvin to appear on the air Sunday for NFL Countdown.

Irvin, a former wide receiver with the Dallas Cowboys and semifinalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame, said he had no problem with the suspension.

"Being an employee and not giving them the information, certainly it's fair," Irvin said.

Plastic baggies with marijuana residue were found in a sunglasses case along with the pipe in Irvin's car. Irvin said he put the items there after finding them on a friend who arrived at his house in Carrollton, Texas, on Thanksgiving. Irvin said he planned to throw the items away but forgot.

Irvin had said his friend, whom he's known for 17 years, had checked himself out of a Houston rehab center earlier in the week.

Irvin was driving with his wife in the car Friday afternoon when he was pulled over for going 78 mph in a 60 mph zone. Irvin was released after paying a $335 fine for the arrest warrant and a $256 bond. The paraphernalia charge is a Class C misdemeanor, punishable by up to a $500 fine.

Irvin said Thursday he's been in "shutdown mode" since the story broke, not checking phone messages or watching television. He said the arrest won't deter him from continuing to help his friends but said he would now handle a similar situation differently _ namely, by not touching anything.

"I need to take a better approach toward things," Irvin said.

In 1996, Irvin pleaded no contest to felony cocaine possession in exchange for four years of deferred probation, a $10,000 fine and dismissal of misdemeanor marijuana possession charges. He also was arrested on drug possession charges in 2000, but they were later dropped.

Irvin won three Super Bowls in four years with the Dallas Cowboys as part of an offense that also featured Troy Aikman and Emmitt Smith. A vocal, emotional leader, he set every significant career receiving mark in team history before retiring because of an injury suffered in 1999.

Smith: Put Irvin in Hall of Fame

DETROIT - Emmitt Smith believes Hall of Fame voters are holding Michael Irvin’s personal problems against him.
And he’s incensed by it.
Smith, the NFL’s career rushing leader and eligible for the hall in four more years, campaigned vigorously Friday for his former Dallas Cowboys teammate.
Irvin is on the ballot for the second time, and election results will be announced today. Smith senses the wide receiver didn’t get in last year because of Irvin’s off-field trouble.
“But you’re going to try to bring this personal side of it?” Smith said. “This is what he’s done off the field — what has that got to do with what he’s done on the football field?”
Pounding his finger on a table and emphasizing every single word, Smith made his point.
“This is the Pro Football Hall of Fame, not the Life Hall of Fame. His stats are what they are. They are not going to change.”
“There should be a set criteria in terms of understanding ... what it takes to get to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. If you’re an athlete and you’ve got credentials like Michael Irvin — Pro Bowls, records, Super Bowls, all those things — if you stack up against that, whoever the panel is, somebody needs to sign off on it.”
Irvin was arrested in November for an outstanding warrant on an unpaid speeding ticket, then charged with misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia after police searched his car.
In 1996, Irvin pleaded no contest to felony cocaine possession in exchange for four years of deferred probation, a $10,000 fine and dismissal of misdemeanor marijuana possession charges. He also was arrested on drug possession charges in 2000, but they were later dropped.
Irvin is one of 15 finalists for today’s election. Also on the ballot is the other member of the Cowboys’ Triplets, quarterback Troy Aikman, in his first year of eligibility.
The late Reggie White, Warren Moon and Thurman Thomas also are eligible for the first time.
Other finalists are Harry Carson, L.C. Greenwood, Russ Grimm, Claude Humphrey, Bob Kuechenberg, Art Monk, Derrick Thomas and Gary Zimmerman. John Madden and Rayfield Wright are senior candidates.
Three to six of the finalists will be selected for the class of 2006 and will be inducted in Canton on the weekend of Aug. 5-6.
A 39-member panel will vote on the finalists. A candidate must get 80 percent of the vote to be elected. If fewer than three get 80 percent, the candidate with the next highest percentage will be chosen.
Smith, who should be a slam-dunk for enshrinement when eligible, doesn’t like the secrecy of the voting.
“If you’re going to sit there behind closed doors and not show your face and not tell people who you voted for, shame on you,” he said. “Shame on you for a lot of reasons, because No. 1 if you’re man or woman enough to make a vote against a person, you should be man or woman enough to tell someone why you did it. That’s the part for me that’s totally disappointing.
“A player should be honored to be here. And when you start seeing stuff like this, what honor is there? Some people get snubbed because of what? Nobody knows. Everybody’s behind closed doors still making their vote. Still walking up to the player’s face and smiling in their face and talking behind their back at the same time, that’s not cool.”
Last year, Aikman campaigned for Irvin, who set a record with 11 100-yard receiving games in 1995, when the Triplets won their third Super Bowl. He finished his career with 750 receptions for 11,904 yards and 65 touchdowns.
“If we went in together it would mean a lot,” Aikman said. “I’m biased. If there was ever a receiver that had a Hall of Fame career, in my opinion it’s Michael Irvin.”
This year, Aikman and White appear the front-runners for enshrinement.
“I played it to win championships and win as many games as I could,” Aikman said. “I feel like I did it as well as anybody that’s played the game. I’m happy that we won three world championships.”
White, who suffered from sleep apnea and sarcoidosis, died Dec. 26, 2004, at age 43. Considered one of the great defensive ends of his era, he was the career sacks leader with 198 when he retired.
White also was the first major free agent to sign with the Packers, in 1993. That helped turn the storied franchise back into winners, and he won the 1997 Super Bowl with Green Bay.
Moon could become the first black quarterback in the hall.
“It would solidify everything that’s been talked about the position back in the ’60s and ’70s, when blacks first wanted to play that position,” said Moon, who played for Houston, Minnesota, Seattle and Kansas City in the NFL after starring in the CFL.
“All the stereotypes that were out there — that we couldn’t lead, that we couldn’t think, that we couldn’t throw the football — all the different things that were talked about us ... if you can get into this elite group as the best ever who played the game at quarterback, then those questions can all be answered.”

Some numbers to see if Smiths theory holds water

Irvin's rank among NFL all time top 50

How this compares to some modern era HOFers

Charlie Joiner

Now look at Art Monk by the same criteria

<TABLE border=0><TBODY><TR><TD>Receptions:</TD><TD>5</TD></TR><TR><TD>Receiving yards:</TD><TD>9</TD></TR><TR><TD>Receiving TDs:</TD><TD>29t</TD></TR><TR><TD>Yards from scrimmage:</TD><TD>27</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

Just from this snapshot he's clearly inferior to all but Joiner so I guess if Joiner gets in you have to put irvin in but it damn well better be after Monk.

The by-laws state that you are supposed to vote ONLY with ON THE FIELD CONSIDERATIONS.

Not one person can justify Irvin as not a hall of famer. He was the 2nd best WR in his time...2nd only to the greatest ever Jerry Rice.

I don't think anyone ever feared Art Monk. That is probably the single best reason that he is not in the Hall (that I can think of)

Art Monk = Palmeiro

Stars, not HOFers. Never of them were ever important enough to their teams and neither put any fear into their opponents.

Irvin will probably get in eventually just because of the super bowls. Sure that's not fair, but that's the way it works. Look how many Yankees and Steelers are in their respective HOF and don't deserve it.
