If that's the case I'll withdraw my comment about the kids knowing...but I still see the death penalty as a completely viable option.

The players called him that:

Haven't read the whole thread, as I'm connecting in over a satellite connection in the caribbean...

However, as a University of Miami fan, I am whole-heartedly disappointed in the decisions some of these young men might've made.

If the coaching staff was involved, I will be thoroughly disgusted - that is not what is expected when parents send their kids off to a college.
They expect the staff to guide them in the right directions, and assist in turning boys into men.

I'll pounce back in here once I get back home, and have a chance to catch up and see what the state is - I have very limited access right now, and
basically am getting my info from ESPN international channel, twitter, and slow websurfing.

I am keeping in mind, however, that this is all coming from a jilted felon serving 20 years for fraud, lying, cheating, and stealing.

<back to depression>
Sorry man.....that sucks.

This started, according to Shapiro, at the end of '01. By '02, he already had his hooks into Winslow, McGahee, Taylor, and a bunch of other stars. This was a collection of studs, and they brought the past stars out in droves. Those players knew what they were doing, the players that mentored them likely warned them (or encouraged them), and the new kids that have come through the program since knew too.

Anyone that thinks the '01-'11 Canes have disassociated themselves from this stuff is fooling themselves. Whether it's "Uncle Luke" appearing on the flier for the '03 Fiesta Back2Back party, or inviting Lamar Thomas to be your TV color analyst, or glorifying your history of transgressions by self-producing your own 30 for 30 film. The Canes knew.

The only thing I can't figure out is how 72 players and half the coaching staff on two different teams could keep such a secret for over nine years. That's fucking incredible. I can't keep a secret between myself and three friends for longer than five minutes.

There was A LOT of willful negligence going on here. Shalala, Dee, and Hocutt might as well be see-no-evil, hear-no-evil, speak-no-evil.

There is a strong code of silence in college football just as there is in many other male dominated arenas.

What brought SMU down was two players who were willing to talk. Even today every other player who played for SMU during that period denies anything was going on.

And keep in mind that that 72 number is only the number Yahoo could corroborate.

Tell that to Colt McCoy's wife. At some point it drifts. Too many people know and those involved start getting reckless, sloppy and more brazen.

They were able to get away with it for so long because by the time it started becoming sloppy and reckless they were fucking terrible and nobody cared.

I know it's been said before, but simply amazing investigative work by Yahoo sports on this. As someone who is going into the field, it's refreshing to see some actual in-depth work and research instead of just racing to throw out sensational headlines without substantial evidence.
