Game Thread Miami (FL) at tOSU, Sat Sep 11, 3:40 ET, ESPN

2:18 was left after that play, with Miami having 1 Timeout left. If Gamble had been correctly ruled down inbounds, the clock would have been running after they moved the chains. So with Tressel killing the clock, this scenario would have been likely:

1:54 left when the first down play was snapped (play clock would have started at 25 after the 1st down)
1:50 left after the first down run was stopped and Miami calls the TO
1:46 left after the 2nd down play is over
1:07 left when the 3rd down play was snapped
1:03 left when the 3rd down play was over
0:24 left when the punt was snapped
0:18 seconds left after the ball was kicked well out of bounds around the 20 yard line.

So Miami would have had a slight chance to get in FG range. Unless JT was wily enough to take an intentional false start on 2nd or 3rd down, which would have allowed tOSU to kill the clock. :wink2:

Right. Just saying there existed the possibility of a blocked punt, or a punt return. Like I say, statistically unlikely. I just wanted to be clear to avoid the inevitable co-Cane response. You gave a great breakdown of it. Slim and none is the best guess.

Also need to factor in the unpiling of the scrimmage. Say we got the correct call from the ref and maintained possession. Tressel has Krenzel snap the ball with one second on the play clock each play (24 seconds elapsed) and runs a QB sneak each time:

1:54 1st Down snap: Krenzel gets the snap, drives ahead behind his blockers and keep churning his legs until his progress is clearly stopped...I'm going with six seconds
1:48 Miami calls TO
1:48 2nd Down snap: Krenzel agains runs the sneak into the pile and takes another six seconds before the play is whistled dead
1:42 Play is dead but the clock keeps running while Krenzel and the OL take their time unpiling...fifteen more seconds until ball is spotted and play clock is started
1:27 Ball is marked, 25 second clock starts
1:04 Third down snap: Another QB sneek, another six seconds
0:58 Play is whistled dead, and again Krenzel and OL take their time unpiling...fifteen more seconds until ball is spotted and play clock is started
0:43 Ball is marked, 25 second clock starts
0:18 Fourth down snap: Groom gets the punt away in about 1.5 seconds with 4.5 hangtime, and a second or two delay on the part of the timekeeper as it goes out of bounds inside the 20 (counting yardage Krenzel gained on the three sneaks)
0:10 Miami first and ten inside their own 20

With the way our defense was playing that night, and with Dorsey as banged up as he was, I seriously doubt Miami goes 50-60 yards in under 10 seconds for a FG try.

a punt return is very likely in the scenario that OSU gets the proper first down but not a second one.....since Miami is allowed to block in the back whenever they want.

but shit man....they got hosed.

He wasn't a starter but def was going to be in the rotation... 3 sacks last year. Why did they cut him? Incoming transfers? Academics?
Details aren't clear, but its a pretty shady issue from what I can tell... they have 84 scholarships right now, Latwan is still a "track guy" according to Randy, however he's rooming with Hendersonk

Gamble was held TWICE on the 3rd and 6 play... no call. Then he catches the ball, but it is ruled incomplete. THEN OSU punts and AJ Hawk is blocked in the back... no call.

But Miami fans - and some stupid journalists/analysts (Dan Fouts) - talk about bad calls.

Do I think Gamble was interfered with on the OT play in question? Not really. But there were calls that went Miami's way that resulted in the game going into OT in the first place. The officiating was atrocious in that game - but it cut both ways. One could argue it cut against OSU.
