Game Thread Miami (FL) at tOSU, Sat Sep 11, 3:40 ET, ESPN

I pulled the rushing totals from tOSU's games against quality opponents, and as you can teams had success on the ground. I agree that the Canes defense didn't exactly stymie all of their opponent's rushing attack, but they definitely held their own. tOSU ranked 7th nationally against the run while the Canes came in at 32nd nationally. The Canes gave up 3.53 yards per carry, while tOSU gave up 2.88 yards per carry. I see the Canes having a top 10 defense this year.

The point I was trying to make in my previous post was that Pryor will have to make plays with his arm, and I think we will force him into making mistakes with the ball. tOSU will not simply pound the ball down the Canes throats, but I don't have any delusions of Miami completely shutting down the run.

Yeah, you cant copy and paste html here, we disabled that for security/virus reasons. Links, colors and style (underline, bold) will copy, but tables will not. You either have to type it up or take a screenshot and upload it.

Say hello to somebody in the same gene pool as Richard Washington:

* The mouth of the south?Latwander has remerged as ?Miami Ad-Vice?. As you might recall, Ohio State never quite found room for Cleveland Glenville DB Latwan Anderson in its 2010 recruiting class. It?s unclear what the disconnect might have been. Perhaps it was academics-related. Maybe character-related, as Latwan was quite the character. Hard to say. But Anderson, who originally verbaled to West Virginia before signing a ?track scholarship? letter with Miami feels like Ohio State disrespected him. Accordingly, Anderson has Sept. 11 circled on his calendar. That?s the day Miami travels to Columbus for a showdown with Ohio State.

?All I keep hearing is what Ohio State is going to do to Miami, Ohio State has this, they have that, but I feel like?since my visit, a lot of players on the team in Miami feel the same way I do?I could care less about Ohio State with who they have or what they have,? Anderson told InsideTheU.com. ?And the only way to shut them up is that day on the field. I feel like just because I have so much passion into this game that I know if they give me a chance I can be one of the reasons why we win that game because I feel I will just go off that game because I hate them so much.?

Many people in the state expected Anderson to attend Ohio State but he felt slighted by the home state team during the recruiting process. ?I?ve liked Ohio State, I?m not going to say I?ve never liked them?I?m from Ohio, but during my recruiting process I kind of felt disrespected,? Anderson said. ?Some of it may have been some of the things I have been through in high school, but I felt disrespected by that whole program.?

During his freshman season, he says he doesn?t have any particular individual goals, just the game against the Buckeyes. ?Right now I don?t really have yearly goals, but the only thing I?m focused on right now is September 11th, that?s it, that Ohio State game.?

Now, back here in the real world, Anderson is on a track scholarship. For him to play football for Miami this fall, they would have to find a football scholarship and transfer him to one of those. We?ll see if that happens and whether Latwan will be in the ?Shoe on 9/11 to try and back up some of these words. He did set my heart all a-twitter with this nasty tweet this week: ?im in the zone who want some this college D get ready 9/11 tressel you owe me an apology? Oh, yeah?

Those numbers simply don't support your argument.

McKnight, Clay, Royster, Green, Robinson were shut down by osus run d.

Stafon Johnson was the only top back to have success against osu, and 60% of that came on one carry.

Vincent Smiths average includes swing passes, which are not really running plays. He also runs a very different system like oregon. Meanwhile shaw did nothing.

oregon, Michigan and georgia tech are very poor comparisons and predictors how well osu will defend the miami offense or vice versa.

Marquise Gray picked up most of his yardage on the final drive in garbage time against second and third string defenders. It was 35-0 before that.

Meanwhile virtually every good back that miami faced had good averages, with the exception being the unbalanced gtech attack.

You are comparing osu shutting down almost every top rb (with a few 4-6 carry backs having success in blowouts) to the long list of productive backs against miami?

Let's take a look at your road game defense:

40 clem
34 fsu
33 unc
31 vt
27 wake
10 usf (7-5, big east)
07 ucf (non bcs)

Your defense surrendered 33 pts a game on the road in acc play. I'd say osu is a lot closer to that group than the mediocre squads at the bottom of the list.

Sometimes osu plays for ball control, field position, etc... but that is when their opposition is being held in check. If by some chance miami proves to be one of the greatest offenses to ever visit the shoe against tressel, better than vince young, twice as good as phillip rivers, etc... you can rest assured that osu wont be settling for a conservative offensive attack and total like they did against usc or texas.

This is what I was getting at about your rationale for holding osu in check against the run.

It seems to me that wisconsin actually exploited a weakness against the run demonstrated in many contests:

Fsu rb 14 car 059 yds 4.2 ypc

Vt rb1 34 car 150 yds 4.4 ypc
Vt qb. 10 car 075 yds 7.5 ypc
Vt rb2 04 car 048 yds 12. ypc
Vt rb3 02 car 012 yds 6.0 ypc

Ou rb1 23 att 80 yds 3.5 ypc
Ou rb2 11 att 71 yds 6.5 ypc
Ou rb3 03 att 17 yds 5.7 ypc

Despite a rookie, limited qb

Cl rb1 14 att 81 yds 5.8 ypc
Cl rb2 06 att 19 yds 3.2 ypc

Nc rb1 24 att 76 yds 3.2 ypc
Nc rb2 01 att 31 yds 15 ypc

Wi rb1 24 att 121 yds 5.5 ypc
Wi rb2 15 att 061 yds 4.1 ypc

The only time they shut down a good rushing attack was georgia tech, which is not a balanced offense nor a useful comparison for this game given their scheme.

also, it should be pointed out that miami had a nice rest, and GT was playing their 3rd game in the course of 11 days due to the weird thursday night slot.

Same things that the Ducks said before the Rose Bowl. I'm not big on transitive theories; however, the basis of belief in a similar result is that I don't believe the Buckeyes are going to be lesser of a team in any aspect except the kicking game (possibly). Thus, the Buckeyes are going against a team that went through a skid and ultimately a thorough beatdown in a bowl game. Is either team that dissimilar to the teams that were on the fields at the end of the year?

It's an early game and Miami will be under the gun trying to protect Harris from our pass rush. Harris isn't the threat Pryor is running the ball. And Miami's running game may not be strong, yet.
Conversely, we need to give Pryor enough time to make plays when needed. Miami has excellent DEs and our tackles will be under fire all game. Pryor will be huge in this game if our running game is slowed.

Sorry everyone. My previous post doesn't exactly have the format that I thought it would. :)

Here's the only real rushing defense stats you need for us from 2009:

7th nationally
90.77 yards per game
2.88 yards per carry
8 rushing TDs given up in 13 games

Two of those rushing TDs were given up to Navy, the nation's #4 rushing team, and a team whose OL cut-blocked the shit out of our DL. We did give up two more rushing TDs the next week to USC, but one came on the fourth play of a 2-yard TD drive...it took mighty USC four plays to crack it in from the 2.

Basic math would tell you that there's only four rushing TDs left over the last 11 games (counting the Rose Bowl). Unless you think Harris is going to throw 3-4 TD passes against us, I seriously doubt you sniff 30 points. In fact, if your performance against Wisconsin is an indicator of how you fare against slow, plodding, Big Ten defenses (14 points, 249 yards total, 61 yards rushing at 2.6 ypc), you'll be hard pressed to crack double digits.
