sepia5 why such confidence?

87--I wouldn't say I'm incredibly confident: I could certainly see you guys pulling out a victory in the Shoe. That said, there are a handful of things that make me reasonably confident.

First and foremost, I really believe we have, if not the best, one of the two or three best defensive lines in the country. It seems that you guys are fairly talented at the skill positions on the offensive side of the ball, but that you have some questions along the line. I think Cam Heyward and John Simon et al are going to be in your backfield quite a bit. If you can, go watch our game with Penn State from last year. That'll give you a good idea of what our guys up front on the defensive side of the ball are capable of.

Second is merely the fact that you're going to be playing in the Shoe. Simply put, it's one of the most difficult places in the country to play. I'd give you a much better chance if this game was being played in South Florida.

Third, I watched your bowl game against Wisconsin last year. I felt that Wisconsin was really able to dictate play and I expect OSU will do the same thing, only with better athletes. We'll try to control the ball, use our big OL to mash the ball down your throats, and go for an occasional big play with guys like Posey and Pryor, who is another year developed.

Fourth, as you eluded to, I've been hearing how the U is back for the past 4 or 5 years, and they still haven't shown it on the field. It hasn't been a matter of recruiting--you've taken your fair share of talent all along the way. I'm not as bullish on Shannon as a head coach as perhaps you are, and, at this point, I'll believe the U is a national title contender once again when I see it.

I think it will be a very good game. There's a thread on here somewhere that has a poll and discussion regarding which opponent is most likely to ruin a perfect season for us next year. The vast majority of posters are pointing to teams like Wisconsin and Iowa, with Miami third or fourth or perhaps even fifth on that list. I'll admit that you guys do seem to finally be headed in the right direction, but talk of a Miami championship in 2010 seems like the unrealistic banter we've been hearing from your fans for several years now.

Thank you for the info jwinslow.

Last year was Jacory's first year in a new offense within his first year as a full time starter. He had significant playing time the previous year, and lead us to two come from behind wins. I am sad to say that those two victories came against powerhouses Duke, which I attended, and Virginia. In the Virgina game he orchestrated a roughly five minute, 80 yard game tying drive where he was forced to complete fourth down conversions. In overtime he threw the game winning score. The problem was that he had to share snaps with Marve, which stunted his growth as a quarterback I believe.

Then the very next spring he was thrown into a new system. In his freshman year, our offense rarely completed passes beyond 15 yards. I think we had four receivers who averaged at least 15 yards per reception. Last year the down field pasing game was a huge focus, which with his youth and dare I say hand injury, accounted for a huge increase in interceptions. Now a year older, with hopefully a healed hand, he will progress in the system and cut down on his mistakes. I hope he has learned to take what the defense gives him. Watch out if he has learned.

I haven't watched a ton of tOSU games but here is what I see on our end.

QB - as long as Jacory stays healthy(behind him is nothing but inexperienced youth)
RB - we are extremely deep. Having FB Pat Hill return from injury is a major lift to our offense. Hill was instrumental in keeping Jacory's backside clean during the first three games of last season. Jacory found himself getting hit more and more after Hill went down. The combination of Damien Berry, Mike James, and Lamar Miller will more than make up for the loss of Cooper if he can't go. Berry runs extremely hard and if Miller gets past the first line of defense good luck catching him. Many thought Berry should have started the second half of the season. The key for Berry is whether or not he has learned his blocking assignments. James filled in at FB last year as a freshman and performed extremely well. James will get more carries at TB with Hill coming back. There is also true freshman Storm Johnson who made a splash during the spring(but we all know what that counts for).
WR - I think we have the deepest and best group in the nation. I will take Hankerson, Byrd, Johnson, and Benjamin over any other. With this group we have the ability to stretch the field and to complete the intermediate passes that keep drives going. This group will be a nightmare for your secondary, IF Jacory is given time.
TE - Here we have Gordon, a senior, who hasn't done anything and Billy Sanders a red shirt freshman. The key will be whether or not Chase Ford, a juco kid, arriving this fall will be able to jump in and contribute.
OL - ???? I am having blind faith here. There are a lot of unknowns.

Offense vs tOSU defense - If our offensive line holds up under the pressure, we will be successful. If not, it will be a very long afternoon. I know we have the weapons to score 30 plus points, but will the line allow them to. I think we hold our own. I see us stretching the field a few times with our speed on the outside because of having success on the ground. I think Whipple will make a commitment to the ground game this year. Giving us more balance. Which will help cut down on Jacory's mistakes.

DE - We are loaded at end. Allen Bailey, Adewale Ojomo(who missed last season because of injury), Marcus Robinson, and Oliver Vernon who had a strong freshman campaign. We will have Gavin Harden coming back from injury as well. Dyron Dye also did positives as a freshman.
DT - We have Marcus Forston coming back from injury(he had a strong freshman year two years ago), Chris Porter, Micanor Regis, and Joe Joseph. I see Forston, Porter, and Regis having huge years.
LB - I see McCarthey moving to the middle this fall, which will leave Sean Spence, Jordan Futch, and Ramon Buchanon manning the outside. Spence, Futch, and Buchanon battled injuries last year with Futch & Buchanon missing significant time. I think this group will have a break out year.
DB - The starting group should be solid but questions linger after that. Starters - Brandon Harris(who had a huge year last year), DeMarcus Van Dyke, Vaughn Telemaque, and Ray Ray Armstrong will all be solid.

Deffense vs tOSU offense- I see our front four containing the tOSU ground game and pressuring Pryor all afternoon long. Our biggest addition this off season was bringing in Rick Petri as the defensive line coach from Kentucky. In the late 90's Petri developed a ton of talent on the defensive line at Miami, and I see the group that we have in place flourishing under him. I think we will force Pryor into a making mistakes with us coming away with turnover or two. We were solid against the run last year so I see no reason for that to change.

Wisconsin caught us at the end of the year when we were beat up and depleted on defense and Jacory was dealing with his hand injury. tOSU will not have that luxury.

3 teams have scored 30+ on tOSU @ home in the last 9 seasons...

2001--Illinois
2003-NCSU (includes 14 pts scored in 3 OT)
2006--Michigan

It has only happened 11 times total in those years:
3 bowl games (31 to South Carolina, 41 to Florida, 38 to LSU)
2 slugfests with Michigan
2001 @ Illinois
1 nightmare at Iowa (Zwick vs Smith)
1 nightmare at Northwestern in OT (Zwick vs. Smith)..27 pts scored in regulation.
A 45-31 win vs. Minny (Minny scored final TD with 53 secs left against backups)
A debacle at USC (Boeckman vs Pryor)
3 OTs vs. NCSU

Good luck.

i appreciate the depth of your post, but a major problem I see is that it is basically all strengths and one weakness which you assume will not be a problem. Te seems to be a non strength but im leaving them out since they don't seem to impede your high expectations for the offensive weapons

Osu consistently fields one of the best defensive lines every year, and heacock (who produced the amazing lines in 02 and 09) feels this might be his best.

Miami had major problems last year and are now moving an average guard to tackle.

I do not think your line is as unknown as you say. I think what we do know is very questionable and it will require some breakout performances to be able to handle osu's talented and deep front 7.

you and I have different definitions of solid against the run, particularly as a foundation to saying you will handle every aspect of osu's attack.

That prediction is the byproduct of a suffocating defense, which I did not see from miami last year. Talented, but nowhere near the dominant force they once were.
Wisconsin caught us at the end of the year when we were beat up and depleted on defense and Jacory was dealing with his hand injury. tOSU will not have that luxury.
or they were just a lot more physical than you.

Hanging 30 on osu is a rare feat, especially at home.

Of course, your expectations seem to capitalize on every miami strength, mitigate their mediocre areas and overcome every weakness... So in that extremely one sided hypothetical, I suppose it is possible.

2001-lousy team.
2003-phillip rivers and jericho cotchery were unbelievable, which netted them 17 pts despite an anemic osu offense that stumbled all year without clarett.
2006-very suspect, very young defense... so much so that tressel switched his m.o. and tried to outscore everyone to protect them.

Meanwhile one of the greatest offenses in cfb history, texas, needed a clutch drive late just to break 20.

This is what I was getting at about your rationale for holding osu in check against the run.

It seems to me that wisconsin actually exploited a weakness against the run demonstrated in many contests:

Fsu rb 14 car 059 yds 4.2 ypc

Vt rb1 34 car 150 yds 4.4 ypc
Vt qb. 10 car 075 yds 7.5 ypc
Vt rb2 04 car 048 yds 12. ypc
Vt rb3 02 car 012 yds 6.0 ypc

Ou rb1 23 att 80 yds 3.5 ypc
Ou rb2 11 att 71 yds 6.5 ypc
Ou rb3 03 att 17 yds 5.7 ypc

Despite a rookie, limited qb

Cl rb1 14 att 81 yds 5.8 ypc
Cl rb2 06 att 19 yds 3.2 ypc

Nc rb1 24 att 76 yds 3.2 ypc
Nc rb2 01 att 31 yds 15 ypc

Wi rb1 24 att 121 yds 5.5 ypc
Wi rb2 15 att 061 yds 4.1 ypc

The only time they shut down a good rushing attack was georgia tech, which is not a balanced offense nor a useful comparison for this game given their scheme.

I would like to hear more from 87 on why he believes the Miami O line will neutralize the Buckeye D line - is it more than hope? EDIT - before answering, read this post and then ask the Oregon fans what happened.

 Thanks, I needed that. The only thing that scares me is that OSU typically gets off to a slow start. If they're ready then I think we beat them by 2 touchdowns. Otherwise the kickers had better be warmed up all game. Especially if Miami comes in wearing fatigues. :p

Just in case our Cane friend missed this, I'd like to highlight it. Texas, a team that averaged over 50 ppg and had the most dangerous QB most of us have ever seen, scored 23 points(2 came from a safety) and needed an unbelievable pass from Young to win. That was before our offense could put any pressure on defenses too.

Hell, your outstanding '02 offense could only muster 17 points in regulation against us.

I think most of your post is either inspired by delusion that since you're Miami(trying to be respectful here) you're going to run circles around the slow midwest team or it's inspired by fear of having a good idea of what's actually likely to happen.
