Men's Basketball Buckeye Tidbits 2007-08 Season

I'm not sure he'll be operating all that much outside. His three point shooting does need quite a bit of work. I'd prefer to see him work out of the high post. I think that would be the best operating space on the floor for him. It would allow him to use his excellent mid range game and speed, he could kick it out to shooter on the wing should he dribble down into the low post. I'd love to see it set up with Kosta at the elbow, Diebler in the corner on that side of the floor, Hunter in the low post on the other side of the lane, and Lighty and Jamar on the perimeter on the other side of the floor.

That would be so deadly.

It will be fun to watch how the staff mixes and matches players this year.

That is how I see it too...The hi-low game starts at the high post and KK has the ability to see over the whole defense to hit the open shooters...

I would also like to see some pick and pop action with Butler/Lighty with either KK or Hunter...

We don't have the prolific scorers, but we have a team that can present a ton of mismatches, and make it easy for themselves to score points...

Kosta could be deadly in pick and pop situations, very much like Ilgauskas is for Cleveland, the only difference being Kosta would have the ability to drive to the hoop should a lane be open.

I'm curious to see how developed Kosta's vision and passing skills are though, since I haven't really heard much about either.

Diebler...As we all know the kid can't score,...

40, because of all my typos I have to get you with this one:biggrin:

I disagree with some other posters who think that Diebler will have trouble with his shooting touch when he starts playing college ball. I have seen plenty of high school shooters and Diebler is one of the better ones. My only question is can he shoot off the catch because they know he can off the dribble.

I can't believe that your friend thinks that Hill might be the starting PG at the beginning of the season. I think that he might see some minutes but I think Butler will play there with Diebler and Lighty flanking him on the wings.

I also see KK playing at the high post which will also be a nice spot for Madsen.

I am surprised that your friend did not have better things to say about Turner.

Just some additional thoughts for now. From what I saw KK is too lanky to drive the floor against college players so that won't happen much IMO. In reference to crazybuckfan and deference to BB73 I will now call him cfb40 but if I should err and call him anything else please be sure that I meant cfb40.
Another thing I want to bring out is that we don't know just how some of the transfers are going to fit in and how well they can play. Who knows, by the time they get through practice Madsen or Hill or one of the others might be starters. At this point I would hesitate to say that Thad would bring someone in just to fill a spot that wasn't worth the effort to get him here.
That would apply to the incoming freshman too. we just don't know how they are going to adapt to college and the college game.

I think that Hill was brought in exactly for that purpose so that Jamar can continue at the 2. Now whether or not that happens ...
In re to Deibler, 1. He hasn't faced collegiate defenders yet and 2. Can he defend at that level. If he can't at the start he may not play much until he breaks in a little bit.

PS This discussion is fun!

That "college defender" better get on Diebler 25' from the basket where Diebler will bury it. Also, if they have to come out 25' from the basket to defend Diebler is a good enough ball handler to go by him. Regarding his defensive capability being 6'7" with very long arms will certainly help him.

Madsen is my surprise player for the 2007 season.

I just call cbf40 40. He knows:biggrin:

So you are saying that someone like , Oh say lighty would get burnt by Deibler? I would have to see it first. And quckness can negate long arms and lanky faster than you can say it.
LOl cfb knew it to that was for the benefit of others. :wink2:

I don't think Diebler will have issues adjusting as long as we don't ask him to do too much. If we ask him to plant himself in the corner and hit threes, then he will have NO PROBLEM adjusting. If we're asking him to penetrate or create for himself, then he'll definitely have issues.

I'm not too worried about Diebler having troubles defensively because I think he's a big SG that will be asked to guard the SF. He may have trouble if he goes up against a big small forward(Raymar Morgan for example), but I don't think his defense will keep him off the floor. I very much doubt we ever put Diebler on a shooting guard or point guard defensively.

I think Kosta will be able to drive against a lot of collegiate centers. Kosta is an elite athlete for a 7 footer, and he is a tremendous dribbler. If given room to operate, he could definitely drive past slower defenders(very much like Dirk does in the NBA).

I also have high hopes for Turner. I see his year mirroring Lighty's, though he might be a little better offensively to start, and probably not as good of a defender. He and Diebler will get lots of playing time IMO.

.

Go back to 40's post on page 9 regarding what his friend told him about Lighty guarding Diebler. He doesn't have to go all the way to the rim only has to do is take 2 dribbles stop and pop. Also, I do not think you will have any problems guarding either a sg or a sf. I guess we shall see in the fall.

To reiterate and I have seen a few clips of Deibler and even a full game he played and I agree he is one of the most talented players I have seen ever , on the offensive side of the ball. He did NOT overly impress me on the D side. As far as the collegiate arena goes I will believe that he will be BOTH an offensive and defensive force when I see it. Keep in mind that I hope I see it soon.

Upper Sandusky played a matador type defense. They played full court with Diebler acting as a free safety protecting the rim. He hasn't really played a lot of structured half court defense outside of AAU, so it's hard to gauge how good/bad he'll be defensively in college.

Personally, I don't think he has the agility or foot speed to guard most Big Ten shooting guards. He's a good athlete, but he lacks the side to side quickness to guard alite SGs IMO. I see him guarding the SF position at Ohio State.

his team tried to outscore you. i cant say i have seen him play much if any man d. mostly they played a 2 2 1 full court or 4man 1 deep. jon was almost always deep man, ive seen a little 2 1 2 with him in the middle. at this point it will be interesting to see how his tendency to reach pnas out at the next level.

personally i put little stock into anything till they get in a coached situation...

LOL...

I never said that Hill would start just that they are going to want to get him on the floor and to do that they will probably play JBut at the 2...

As for Turner, he will be fine, just will struggle some with his offensive game and some streaky shooting, but he is a capable defender already...His progression at this point reminds of they way Lighty progressed last year...

As for Diebler, he is athletic enough that I am not worried about his defense, until he shows that he will struggle...

I have to go to work so I will just ask this question and give my answer when I get home tonight.
What role do you think think Madsen will play this year? But before we answer we need to get his stats and a little history in here.
