Men's Basketball Buckeye Tidbits 2007-08 Season

As some of you know I have been awful busy with work, and other things, but I talked to a friend of mine that had a handful of basketball tidbits that I thought might interest some of you...

The first name out of his mouth was Jon Diebler...As we all know the kid can't score, and from him seeing him in open gym he tells me that not even the likes of Lighty or Turner could slow him down. He said he expects him to start this year...

Also he is looking for big things out of Butler this year, and said don't be suprised if we see some of Butler at the 2 guard to get Hill in the lineup...He said he is not just a backup player...

Overall he said expect us to be young, and make mistakes, but we will be a team that many will take notice of come big ten season...

Wow, sounds interesting. I just wish I didn't have to wait so long for basketball season. (Although I have a feeling football should keep my interest for a while. :wink2:)

No problem...

Also expect big things out of KK as we are seeing the numbers he is putting up overseas...

The two guys I expect to struggle a little with what I have heard are Turner and Wallace...Kinda like Lighty last year where he struggled to get acclamated to college ball, but once they do watch out...

My friend didnt have much to say about Lauderdale other than what we already know about being a banger and a rebounder...

Also no word on Madsen or Twig but I would expect both of them to give us solid minutes off the bench...

I have gotten a little gun shy about players being touted as scorers before they get to college and then do a lot worse once they get here.
Butler averaged over 30, Cook died the second half of last year and others who proclaimed a scoring touch. Heck just about anyone on the team were prolific scorers in high school.
So While I like what I see out of KK and Deibler and the rest I will wait till I see it in the Schott before I hand out any laurels.
Sure would be great to see us win the NC this year but I actually don't see us doing that either as long as we have a lot of one and dones every year.

I understand what you are saying, but the thing with Cook and Butler was that they were not really counted on that much, and from the looks of this team this year, KK and Diebler are going to be asked to score...

Butler has never taken a mass amount of shots to be able to allow himself to score a lot, and Cook with injuries, and losing his touch somewhat fell off in the second half of the season...

Ok lets explore a little bit about what we have this year barring losses from players leaving the team
Our roster as I see it now is

Danny Peters G
Jamar Butler SG
Kyle Madsen C/F
David Lighty G/F
Mark Titus G
Matt Terwilliger C
Othello Hunter F
Jon Diebler SG
P.J. Hill (PG) G
Kosta Koufos C
Dallas Lauderdale C/F
Evan Turner F
Eric Wallace F

Starters - at least to start practice
Butler
Koufas
Lighty
Turner
Hunter

I can see these getting plenty of playing time and maybe earning a starting position.

Deibler
Twigs
Hill
Madsen

Thoughts Buckfan ?

I also think freshman shooting guards have the toughest time finding consistency. As long as Kosta doesn't fall in love with his outside shot(he's an average shooter from distance, but he isn't great), I think it will be easier for him to be a consistent scorer throughout the season that it was for a pure shooter like Cook.

It was my impression that Butler was to be the #2 last year but his shooting didn't improve over the year. I don't think KK will be asked to score a lot from outside especially if the G/F are good and consistant which was a problem at times last year.

Agreed. I think freshman that rely solely on their shooting stroke can be more easily discouraged and they can develop kinks in their shot since they try to "fix" their shot. The one area at the u18 Euro championship that Kosta has struggled with is his outside shot. Hopefully with Diebler and Butler around, he will take at most 1 per game.

I see him working out of the high post or near the wing, and either shooting over smaller defenders or taking bigger defenders off the dribble.

It also sounds like he's been working on his shot blocking. He leads the tournament in that statistic as well.

If I had to project his stats, I'd guess that he'll score 16.0 PPG at 55% shooting. I think he'll get 8 RPG and 2 BSPG.

I'd put Diebler in the starting lineup over Turner from what I heard...

The thing with Diebler is that his stroke is just so pure that I don't think he will have a problem there...

I also agree about KK playing on the wing some, but I think we will see him on the block quite a bit as well...

It would be nice to see KK and Hunter work on a little high-low game, as both can step outside and hit the jumper, and I am thinking that both can provide adequate moves in the post...

It's exciting to hear that Deibler is so good he could replace Turner in the lineup. My thoughts were that he would need a few games to get up to speed on the college game and especially the defensive side of the ball. Since you are in a position to hear more than me I happily bow to that knowledge. A hi Low game is something I think we need to see more of. It simply is a great offensive weapon and makes the D think of more things.
The thought of having five guys on the floor that could hit a 3 makes me giddy. Now as to whether or not that happens is another story.
P.S The Vids I have seen of Deibler more than assure me that he can hit from anywhere at anytime and that the only reason he has teammates is to have someone to pass him the ball.

:oh:

That would be a lot of fun to see. I'm getting more and more excited about bball season by the day. I think with Koufos on the floor our offense should be pretty fun to watch. His outside game should add a fun, new element to our offense, and will allow a good high-low game like you were talking about.
