Mark Sanchez (Philadelphia Eagles)

I'm still not sure how anyone, including Pete or any USC fans, can say that this kid is making a mistake.

If he works out for the Lions and works out well he could be the number one overall pick in the draft. The Lions are going to take a QB, now the only question is whether or not they will take Stafford or Sanchez.

Am I missing something here? The kid is going to be a first rounder no matter what now that Bradford is coming back, right?

So where is this mistake?

Pete Carroll is a fucking dick for doing that to the kid.

And what, exactly, does Pete Carroll know about coaching and evaluating talent in the NFL? He was a fucking failure in the NFL. He's worried about the fact that now his team won't be playing for a NC next year?? Hey Pete, beat fucking Oregon St. and Stanford and then worry about playing for NCs!!! We know you can win the big game, now win the little game.

What a fucking asshole.

What an unbelievably spoiled rotten brat Carroll sounds like. You have to be kidding me!!!!!! The biggest day in the kid's life and you come out and basically say he's making a bad decision. Nice. Dickhead.

Mark's NFL evaluation came back 2nd round.

1) Is this reported anywhere via link?

2) Do you believe 32 teams will pass on him?

3) isn't a protest better served for private advice rather than ripping the mistake immediately after his big moment?

Yikes. He was kinda negative...

I think he was trying to send a message to his kids - I think he was more warning kids who are going to skip their last year who would not get their degree. But I think there's more to this story than meets the eye - perhaps Mark promised to stay another year and reneged, or maybe there was an unspoken agreement between the coach and Mark.

When was that evaluation done? If McCoy, Bradford, and Tebow were considered part of that equation, Sanchez would move up at least three spots as a QB. The real question is how many NFL teams are planning to use a first round pick on a QB. If it's more than one, Sanchez is almost a lock. I know draft gurus are high on Stafford because of potential and measurables, but Sanchez may score higher on big game performances. He did go out with a 400+ yd performance against a good defense.

PMS Interview with Pete Carroll

- I love the gracious snippet they played of Petey's reaction Mark's decision.

- Listening to this host makes me almost like Hooley in comparison, he's that bad. Almost.

- Petey was asked whether there was any info that would make him think it was time for Mark to leave, and his answer was basically "not necessarily." Being #1 at his position isn't enough if QBs aren't highly regarded enough.

- Will not try to change Mark's mind. The only thing that would change it would be bad feedback from the league over the next 72 hours.

- Didn't feel he needed to sugarcoat anything. He wanted to see what they could learn from this decision, maybe it will turn out to be the right one. He didn't want folks to think this was all hunky dory, he wanted to make it clear there's another way to approach this for other players.

Excellent Pete Carroll interview on PMS - WeAreSC Forums
That explains the press conference.

For everyone that believes this I have a Nigerian uncle that is looking to park some money somewhere.

Do the evaluations not presume several things regarding the draft (e.g., who will declare early)? A few weeks back, I think a lot of people assumed Bradford would declare. When he said he was returning to Oklahoma, Sanchez's stock went up. That could explain his evaluation coming back second round.

Note that Sanchez didn't declare until after Bradford said he was coming back--thus, Sanchez knew he would likely be (at worst) the second QB taken. Given how things have played out, I would be shocked if he doesn't get selected in the first round, and I'm sure he is thinking the same thing. The question is, does Pete still think Sanchez won't get selected until the second round even knowing that Bradford won't enter the draft, or is Pete just acting immaturely because he assumed he'd have Sanchez back and now he didn't get his way?

When he goes is totally dependent on the needs of teams. And his competition in the Draft. It would not surprise me to see him go first round.

Really going out on a limb there there Taos - after ESPN's guys ranked him either the #1 or #2 QB in the draft, and Kiper stated that he could go in the top 3 picks overall.

Two other ratings I saw had him at #4 and #9 overall. Personally, I think that's a little high - I think Stafford's a better prospect. If I were an NFL GM, I'd also be very concerned about the knee that was injured in fall camp - that seems like the type of injury that could recur occasionally.

But I think Sanchez definitely made the correct decision for himself.

Even if Carroll is right about the statistics (and I don't doubt the stats he seems to be alluding to), I don't see any practical reason for him to be expounding at such length on the topic. I'm sure he and Mark discussed in private previously, so is this some kind of of public service announcement? What value can there be in so openly second-guessing your (now former) star player?

I don't know. I guess I've watched that video and thought about it, and maybe it's as simple as being disappointed for his own prospects next year. But I wondered if there wasn't more to it than that. He alluded to Mark getting pounded w/ stuff. Perhaps he's a bit miffed at agents or others filling Mark's head with what he believes are bad ideas. Perhaps he's also really concerned that this is a poor choice and can't just "give up." Along those lines, it's like Randy Pausch said, it's when a coach gives up that you should be concerned, because that's when he no longer cares about you.

I certainly concede that it could all be just sour grapes, but it just made me wonder if there was more to it than that and that the message was made because he felt it needed to be. I'm not expert on this stuff or Pete Carroll, and I agree the whole thing felt odd.
