Interesting post on OB:
Although I understand it, you guys have Will all wrong.
Shortly after Will was designated HCIW, I made a post that was not believed at the time; the Mack Brown coaching time line. I told you in summer 2008 Mack thought he could make a title run with McCoy. I further explained Mack would coach 1 year after that because he did not think it was right to let a first year guy take over with a new QB the year after a championship. The people who bothered to read the post laughed because it sounded absurd. McCoy was coming off a dreadful sophomore year and Chiles was the QB many wanted. I even told you Mack thought Colt was special. Hell, I even laughed at that at the time.
I posted the same info again last December. My tone was more of a ?look how it all turned out, looks like Mack was right? kind of post. I predicted, again, that Mack would step down after the 2010 season and Will would coach in 2011. And again, most of you thought I was full of crap.
I can now tell you that Will was the source of the information. We are fiends and he is one of the better people I know. To be fair, I don?t think Mack signed a blood oath, It was more of an understanding between men. I can tell you that in the last 2 years, Will has virtually taken over recruiting because both coaches assumed it would be his team.
When Mack went 5-7, his ego would not allow him to step down. He actually said to the staff he would not go out on a losing season. This caused Will some problems. Mack told Will he wanted to ?turn things around? and Will thought that seemed like more than a 1 year deal. He was upset and rightfully so. I knew he had reached out to Miami, I was as stunned as everyone else when he got the job at Florida.
Much of what Chip wrote about the staff divisions are dead on. All of it had to do with accountability. The older coaches just were not walking the walk.
We are going to be devastated in recruiting, at least 5 losses maybe more. I think we may take years to recover. But lay this at Mack?s feet, not Will?s. He is a good man who lived up to his word. When Mack kept the keys, what was he supposed to do?

Ruh Roh (if true).

Now Texas is the joke of the nation. In one year, Texas managed to keep itself from going to the Pac - 10, went from national championship game to losing season with no bowl, lost its star Defensive coordinator, all while OU is in a BCS bowl and Texas A&M gets a 10 win season.

But hey, we got a sweet TV deal. Right? Am I right?

Saw31 - great pic where did you find that....

Some notes from the morning drive in - "florida is great place and so is texas but i guess he didn't want to wait (in a very condescending tone)"
"Mack brown needs to retire so we can go get Jim Harbaugh"
"Muschamp would look everywhere before taking coaches from UT. He wouldn't pillage the staff he respects Mack to much"

A question for everyone.... I will admit bias when I say this but I don't think UT head coach is that great of a job... to me its an EASY job... your the flagship university (credit to buckeyesin07, I borrowed his line)in the 2 most populated state in the country, you have your pick of "top rated" players ...it doesn't have every program in the nation trying to raid its talent like Cali & Florida... I don't know... I guess its just me... I'd look for a challenge

BevoTV was my first thought too. That crap will be stillborn if they don't resurrect this program fast. People in Austin have FAR too many other enjoyable things to do than watch a TV network showcasing a Randy Shannon coached team.

I think people are sticking one foot over the ledge a little too quick here. This is Texas folks. They still have an ABSURD amount of talent at their disposal that they're recruited in recent years. They have the money and the name to get some quality coaches in there, and with Mack at the helm will be competing for conference/national championships again in the next couple years. I don't think it will be this year but they won't have another losing season.

True... but your forgetting the rest of Texas.... trust me.. more people care about UT football outside of Austin than inside... but according to the UT mouthpiece (Chip Brown)... ESPN wants to keep them away from Fox sports so they are talking 10 year deal around $150M or higher range...

just stupid.

Point being made this morning is Mack has to say he's taking around for longer than another year or 2 .... otherwise he should just quit... Other schools will use the fact that he's not gonna stay around that long unless he publicly announces it in recruiting... unless they are going for another HCIW title... which wouldn't surprise me considering the arrogance of Mack Brown to blame all the problems of the football team on the Staff saying "how could you do this to me"

Interesting notes about their recruiting... apparently Mack knows how many players at each position he's gonna take. They offer the top juniors and recruits & recruiters are told that they wont recruit behind them.... the point in case made is Chris Whaley & Christian Michael ... Whaley was offered as one of the top juniors and told they wouldn't recruit another RB... Michael blew up his senior year but Mack wouldn't let them off .....

I think alot of their "recruiting" success is based off inflated numbers from Rivals/Scout because they spend more time in Texas....

You're right that it IS Texas and the state WILL always have talent. Having said that, if you recall the majority of the 80s and 90s, UT was largely irrelevant nationally. So a bad hire or two can tank any program for a while. Randy Shannon as HC might just do that.

I completely understand that, which is why I made sure to incude "with Mack Brown at the helm" - he's obviously had success running the program and with decent coordinators (which im sure they'll be able to bring in) the program will be just fine. The question is how long Mack wants to stick around and what life after Mack will look like.

Personally, I don't like this HCIW crap so hopefully they don't go down that road again.

I don't know if I would classify the job as "easy" per-se.
True, there are millions of dollars and world class facilities at the disposal of the coaching staff and there are plenty of great recruits to be had - but you're also fighting a minimum of 5 top programs in the surrounding areas for these players (Tech, Texas A&M, Arkansas, Oklahoma, LSU). My understanding is that Mack Brown has a crazy schedule of booster club meetings he has to address and this is before he even looks at a shred of game film or hits the practice field.

The Big 12 isn't a flaming guantlett of death in terms of schedule - but it ain't the PAC10 or ACC either.

It believe it's quite a challenge.
