Duke is more loaded on the wing than either tOSU or UK, so competition wasn't a factor. Plain and simple, he just liked Duke the best. Not sure why that's so hard for people to understand. Liked it best, felt most comfortable there. End of story. People need to put their personal feelings aside about this school or that school. When making a decision like this, you have to be open to ALL options.

And to DZ above, he did not grow up rooting for tOSU. UK was it in that house.

Personally, if my son has the chance to be recruited in a few years and had the opportunity to go to a Duke, or an ND, I couldn't fault him for choosing either of those schools when thinking about the future. I mean, personal feelings aside, why not go to Duke? Play for a legend, tons of support from campus (you are THE ticket), great academics, tons of national exposure, etc. Doesn't sound like that bad of a choice to me...

22, I did not mean to get you riled up. When talking about academics, I was not comparing in-state schools to Duke I was comparing them to Kentucky's. Cincinnati has a damn good aeronautical engineering program:biggrin: I really do not want to get into discussing academics or comparing them because that is for a different forum.

I agree regarding your statement about going to Duke or ND. The same would hold true of quite a few other schools.
And to add, Duke shot 40% from 3 this year, which I don't think is that bad. It was the only thing that kept them in the game vs. Mercer.

I guess I should check statistics before I post something like that. I thought that they shot quite a bit from the 3 point this past season and did not realize that their percentage was that good.

I would say in DZ's defense that the reason he thought Luke was going to go to UK was because of Luke's father growing up in Kentucky. I do not think that he held out much hope for Ohio State and I am probably the last person to defend DZ.

Oh, not riled up at you guys specifically. I see the questioning going on on every Buckeye board and I don't understand it other than the fact that personal feelings are dictating those responses. To me, if you lose out on a kid to a top-flight program both academically and athletically, I don't see it as a slight. Personally, I'd rather lose a kid to a program like Duke than to MSU, Michigan, IU, etc.

Sort of surprised in your last statement. I guess you do not want guys coming back to bite Ohio State in the conference but again that is for a different forum or thread.

Not really. Just that those programs are more "even" with tOSU as a program I would say. Duke, UK, UNC, UCLA (at least historically), Kansas are all traditional, blue-blood powers that, if I would lose a recruit to, wouldn't be that disappointed and question why.

It's like football recruits selecting tOSU, Bama, Texas etc. Those schools have earned their reputation and you just have to shrug and say "I understand why someone would choose to go there".

And no one else fails with good players either, right? That's such an arbitrary argument. Good players or not, Duke was flawed this year. It happens, even with All-Americans.

The coaching argument is silly too. Coaches do more with less sometimes, no doubt. But lots of programs bring in good players every year and don't have the sustained levels of success.

Again, personal biases...

I'm happy for Luke and his family and coaches. Luke's a great, down to earth kid. Coach Bales is a good guy as well and this is big for him.

I'm just having fun thinking about all the time Coach K put into recruiting Jabari Parker only to have him for only one year going out to Mercer in the first round.

Biases and all... but still fun to think about. Hopefully Luke gets drafted as high as Parker some day and has just as much team success in college. Best of both worlds.

Luke and his HC were invited and attended a small youth coaching / youth player meeting last night in Fairborn. What a pleasure it was to see this young man put on a show. He was incredibly smooth, very hard working, and as polite and well mannered as any kid I have ever met. He and his coach demonstrated a number of shooting drills and range was not even the surprise (he is definitely an "in the gym" range kind of player) but his shooting percentage was 75 - 80%. He was even a bit "rusty" due to taking the last few weeks off after the U18 basketball team wrapped up. It was quite impressive. I will have a hard time rooting against him at Duke. Duke got a gem here, no doubt about it. As much as I would have loved rooting for him in Cbus, I hope he finds success at Duke. Great kid and very impressive coach as well.

Franklin (Ohio) High senior Luke Kennard has been to the Beach Ball Classic three consecutive years, and has threatened Mike Bibby’s all-time single-game tournament scoring record of 48 points in each appearance.

In 2012, he scored 43 in a loss to Orem (Utah) to tie Kobe Bryant for what at the time was sixth on the list. Last year, he poured in 45 points in a win over Mullins to move into a tie with Bibby for second on the list.

Bibby’s record, which stood since 1995, was unable to withstand another scoring onslaught by Kennard.

The 6-6 senior guard who has committed to Duke scored 52 points Friday at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center to lead Franklin to a 96-73 win over Mullins on opening night of the 34th Beach Ball.

Looked good today. D#mn. Would have been awesome to have him the S&G. I realize OSU isn't the Blue Blood that Duke is, but we have a pretty good history ourselves and I've seen rankings that put us in the top 15 programs all time. It's tough to watch our boys struggle and see Kennard and Bragg elsewhere.

It does not bother me in the least if these kids want to go to a school out-of-state even if they are offered by Matta. It is their loss and they will know it later in life because you cannot play basketball your entire life.
