Lou Holtz (Official Thread)

There were times when I turned off the audio during the BYU-OreSt game. Lou Holtz should not be allowed to speak into a mic. Never mind his useless babbling--I just can't stand hearing him speak.

And, what's up with Dick Vitale?! He can hardly talk anymore--and he's still on the tube! It's bad enough that the talking heads have nothing remotely intelligent to offer. Is having a good speaking voice too much to ask?

On the other hand, did anyone listen to that 1959 tOSU-Oregon Rose Bowl clip that somebody posted? Mel Allen...what a voice.

I must admit that I turned off the sound to the Oregon State BYU game because I couldn't stand the commentary. May's script was so clearly reading from the prompter that is was pathetic.

Lou just noted Ohio State is in the top seven in offense AND defense, which is why he thinks we're the best team in the country. Remember, he's a Woody Hayes boy from way back.

May, of course, immediately said Wisconsin.

Mayday with that Erkel look and he bespeckled face! He defines the word tool.

Earlier in the broadcast today, they were talking about weather and it's role on the Iowa/NW game. Lou stated that it can really impact the game; to which May responded that as a linemen he loved the sloppy weather. Holtz quipped, 'because you couldn't block anybody when it was dry.'

Lou - 2
May - 0

I caught that when I was doing some car maintenance.

Yeah, I have a TV in my garage.

The only reason I'll keep Holtz and May on anymore is to see if Lou gets a good slam on May. That has to be some of the funniest shit on ESPiN when it comes to college football commentary (Griese announcing while completely drunk ranks slightly below), seeing May's reaction when Lou catches him off guard.

Sufferin' succotash!

Coming into tonight, Arkansas' last "major" bowl win was the 1978 Orange Bowl. Guess who their coach was then?

I remember that game. They were huge underdogs to the Sooners that night.

Saw an old pep talk by everyone's favorite former coach with a lisp. Well, it wasn't really a pep talk, but it had a nice line about Ohio and Michigan in it. Growing up in northern Ohio, I had to laugh:

Heres another video of Lou from the 2008 Michigan pep rally (Last time ND beat Michigan, after 2 late 4th quarter losses in '09 and '10), I think it was his first return to the university in an official capacity since leaving. If you can get past the first couple minutes of him talking up Notre Dame itself and his family, theres a nice little speech in there. They also introduce him with the 1812 Overture with the finger pointing, which was always cool to see live at a game. That was something I'm pretty sure started with Lou at the start of the 4th quarter and carried over to subsequent coaches:

Lou Holtz..

Lou Holtz, who after every school he's been a head coach of has been found to have some sort of major violation right after he left. This guy is employed by ESPN, ESPN paints a picture that Jim Tressel is the sleaziest, dirtiest coach alive, yet employ someone who was far worse then Tressel. Now, I like Lou Holtz but hate the bias of ESPN..
