Look Who's Transferring Now (The Portal)

31% drop from the lowest year in the last 10 years.

Pretty stark and all of a sudden like but there it is. I was against the idea of a restricted portal window to start with. Having the first one, essentially, coincide with the early signing period is one of the more breathtakingly dumbass things I've seen done in a while.

But hey, coaches need to be able to control this stuff...I mean for the good of the players. Am I right?
Restricted is better than unrestricted. It limits the I didn't get to play in x game fuck you guys I'm out emotional reactions that kids make. It makes them actually have to think about it a little.

Problem is, it was NEVER fair for the player, or the employee who was risking his life. And I mean that literally and also financially. Coaches have always been able to leave on a moment's notice and the kids they recruit were just left there in a new system with coaches they weren't familiar with. While coaches got to leave freely and also made millions off of free labor. I have 0 sympathy for the colleges and the NCAA, this made this monster and fed it for decades, and brainwashed fans. There are a number of players who didn't pan out for OSU who I would've liked to transfer and open up a spot for a talented player. Free agency isn't a bad thing, and IMO has made professional sports even more interesting. Whatever your sports affiliation, I can guarantee you that a FA had a high level of success with your team, and he became YOUR player, and you disregarded their past team. I'm a Steelers fan, and trading for Minkah Fitzpatrick was massive to the defense. And before that Jerome Bettis was a massive trade, that brought immense success! CFB players should have that ability as well. Maybe they are on a deal where they can't transfer until after year 2, or there are limits to the amount of transfers by a player, IDK.
I would like some type of regulation with the Portal and NIL, but I have no problem with either. I much rather above board benefits, then a gold Trans Am just appearing outside a recruits house, or McDonalds bags being given to players behind the local Family Dollar.

Like i said, the Unis got too much power and refused to change anything. The end result is the dams eventually cracking and what we have now.

Fully agree, players were getting screwed all those years.

Would still like a situation that rewards kids for staying at 1 location fpr 4 years, but that ship has probably sailed.
Notice i say "reward" - not punishing, like the old NCAA has for my entire life.
I thought Grad xfer was a good way to do that. If you completed degree, you could play immediately at another location.

that's why i say go back to the penalty of sitting a year to eliminate guys bolting just because they're not starting.
and of course allow some sort of appeal to be immediately eligible depending on your specific situation.

I think it needs more than appeal.
If your HC quits, you get a freebie. Maybe add 1 more coach they can put on record (position, recruiter ?)
If there's an NCAA sanction of any kind - including self-sanctioning - you should get a freebie, unless you're directly involved with it (ie fab4 wouldnt get to transfer)
Those shouldn't require appeal. They should be auto the second the triggering event happens.
... some examples just off the top of my head...

Is that a lot for Bama, or just how Saban churns through talent that isnt producing immediately?
Saban is pissed, and making changes to his roster to win big again. If we think Ryan Day has pressure at OSU, imagine what Saban deals with for a 2 loss season(where both losses were less than 10combined)!

Especially when the TN loss was on the DBs, which is Saban's forte.
Yes. But it's more than that, he's shown now in consecutive years to not have the recruiting chops or team to develop skill position players. Young has won them a number of games the past 2 seasons in which they should've lost. But they have struck out constantly with WRs and RBs, and the Portal has been the only way they've found some type of success. Think about what Bama would've been without Jameson Williams last year and Jamyr Gibbs this year .

Grayson McCall QB from Coastal Carolina has entered portal.

Absolutely the type of QB OSU should kick tires on and see if he’d be willing to compete for a starting job.

Super mobile, quick release, average to plus arm, but extremely versatile. Would probably be a 3rd-4th rd pick if entered draft. His coach at Coastal is leaving, and he wants one year at a major P5 to raise draft stock.

We have plenty of talent waiting.

No need to kick tires on a QB.

He’s going to Liberty with his coach… a QB like him is not willing to come to Ohio State and compete.. when there’s other jobs that are just handed to him and will still be a high pick no matter where he plays as long as he doesn’t stink

Early read is potentially Auburn with Huge Freeze. He could certainly end up at Liberty but Jaime Chadwell’s system is extremely gimmicky and I think it’d benefit him to showcase his talents in a more pro-style system.

To other posters saying we have enough talent in QB room….maybe, maybe not. McCord looked pretty average IMO…certainly a small sample size. I like Devin Brown’s mobility but he will be a redshirt Freshman next year.

Fields worked out well as a transfer. I think it’d be negligent to ignore any players in portal based on where this program is currently suffering…..pissing some kids off might actually be a good thing….

I don’t think anything should be off the table at this point.
