Kind of like they're adults working a job...
In everyday life, adults have the opportunity to leave and switch companies, or start their own company's. And companies do what they can to keep their employees, especially their best ones. If an employee feels unwanted or sees their career going nowhere, then they have the option to leave. Not sure why it's so crazy that we treat 18-22yos like adults.
Alternatively, when high school players come to a program like Ohio State, and the University invests heavily in facilities and personnel to develop their scholastic, physical, and athletic development, then there is something other than the simple everyday life at work that most people will experience it. In the world of work, individuals are hired for positions that have responsibilities in which they can immediately contribute in meaningful ways to the organization's performance and results. Most high school players entering major university programs do not contribute much for the first two years as they develop. Consequently, the investment in them and what they have received is far greater than it would be in normal working life and this is where the dilemma arises in my mind.
