Look Who's Transferring Now (The Portal)

USC deciding to recruit defense also??

Is Grinch still there?

Meh, games still need to be played. And those boosters brought in a bunch of talent, and they got manhandled by Utah and their lack of extensive NIL dollars. All the money Texas spent, and they watched Kansas St win the Big 12, and I doubt Manhattan, KS boosters broke the bank for their players. But CFB was always a junior NFL, but CFB fans wanted to think that the bands, rivalries and pageantry made it more wholesome. Kids have been getting paid for generations. Parity has been laughable in CFB forever, NIL and the portal may actually offer some type of parity for once. It'd actually be refreshing to see a new team in the CFB actually put up a fight.
But I certainly agree that there needs to be some type of rules going forward.

What separated it for me is that there was a kind of finalization to where a College player went.
You recruited a kid from HS, and he was on that roster -- good or bad -- for 4 or 5 years. There were some transfers, but the penalty for transferring was high enough that it was rare and only when they were sure (Boren, Schlegel) or desperate (Tathan).

For the overwhelming majority, players represented just 1 University in their college career.
The portal paired with NIL now feels a lot more like Free Agency.
I think some of it is inevitable - the Universities did hold too much power over their lives. Once you signed that agreement in HS, they could go back on anything and everything promised.

Ideally, I'd still like to see some way that returns to a little less xfer portal chaos and rewards loyalty to 1 school? I'm not sure what that looks like though.
I thought the portal shuffling would slow down as the years went on, looks like I was wrong, appears its only going to get worse and more crazier.

You could have been right, but NIL has stoked that flame and started 3 more fires.
Though I think QB in transfer portal was always going to be a thing. Just nature of the beast that there will always be one "dude" who locks it down for 2-3 years at a time -- leaving a lot of QBs who just want to play. But in the end, they're all just swapping bench locations in the portal.
This is what I was thinking. Schools will focus on players already at D1 level who have proven they can play and then go hard after them. High school recruits will move to lower priority. Instead of having a player for three years it will be massive turnover every season. Maybe you get a player for two years, but probably lots of college football's version of one and done.

Time to get a portal expert on staff!

Oof. The new normal is going to be 2yr stints for everyone.
5* recruits headed to NFL after 2 years (or getting washed out Saban style)
Everyone else coming in as transfers for 2 years after proving themselves at smaller schools.
Bowl games for G5 will become scouting events for us.

Problem is, it was NEVER fair for the player, or the employee who was risking his life. And I mean that literally and also financially. Coaches have always been able to leave on a moment's notice and the kids they recruit were just left there in a new system with coaches they weren't familiar with. While coaches got to leave freely and also made millions off of free labor. I have 0 sympathy for the colleges and the NCAA, this made this monster and fed it for decades, and brainwashed fans. There are a number of players who didn't pan out for OSU who I would've liked to transfer and open up a spot for a talented player. Free agency isn't a bad thing, and IMO has made professional sports even more interesting. Whatever your sports affiliation, I can guarantee you that a FA had a high level of success with your team, and he became YOUR player, and you disregarded their past team. I'm a Steelers fan, and trading for Minkah Fitzpatrick was massive to the defense. And before that Jerome Bettis was a massive trade, that brought immense success! CFB players should have that ability as well. Maybe they are on a deal where they can't transfer until after year 2, or there are limits to the amount of transfers by a player, IDK.
I would like some type of regulation with the Portal and NIL, but I have no problem with either. I much rather above board benefits, then a gold Trans Am just appearing outside a recruits house, or McDonalds bags being given to players behind the local Family Dollar.

It’s like free agency in pro sports ..in 1970 as a Reds fan I knew barring trade I knew my team from Pete Rose to Billingham and the starting lineup for every NL team. I hardly follow Baseball now but I loved it then. Nothing goes backward. College football let the genie out of the bottle..there may be changes on the margins but this is the “new normal”.

Coaches are going to have to keep recruiting everyone, even after a kid signs and is on campus. If the coaches want him to stay, they're going to have to give him a reason to stick around. Crazy times......
Kind of like they're adults working a job...
In everyday life, adults have the opportunity to leave and switch companies, or start their own company's. And companies do what they can to keep their employees, especially their best ones. If an employee feels unwanted or sees their career going nowhere, then they have the option to leave. Not sure why it's so crazy that we treat 18-22yos like adults.

Is there even a point at recruiting developmental players anymore? If you are a big time P5 school? Just throw it all at the higher rated more ready recruits, and if you whiff go raid a smaller school for a experienced developed player to fill the slot instead. Seems like it'll be a rarity going forward to see a kid sit for 2/3 years before he hits the field for meaningful playing time.

For the top 10 programs you’re right. I think a few places are ahead of us on this. We will catch up in a hurry.

Team chemistry/culture is always going to be a major factor in success. No organization does well with a bunch of hired guns that don't work well together as a team from my experience.

Aggy is up to 21 players in the portal now  wonder if this will be a annual occurrence for them
Probably will be for everyone... Kids can transfer once with no penalty so watch out. It's smart too...

If I'm a star player I'm hitting the portal every year to get more money or seeing who can be the highest bidder.

Especially if you're an impact true freshman and a top 10 NFL pick projection? Probably could get 5 mil a year at some of these stupid schools if the bidding war went right.
