Look Who's Transferring Now (The Portal)

Speaking of a madhouse, think about what this is like for mid to lower level/project/late bloomer type high school kids. They're fighting for roster spots now with college transfers.

Three fucking weeks before signing day.

Brutal.
HS kids will be screwed and are the big losers in all of this.
I was talking with some buddy’s and most are of thought that the G5 is going to become a minor leagues for P5, since most P5 spots will be taken by transfers or the top HSers. G5 will be the one taking a lot of the HS kids, and what may happen is a kid does well at that level and then leaves for a bigger program. We’LL see OSU and many of the big boys start getting players from schools like Kent St, Delaware, MTSU, etc

Yep. Makes a lot of sense as we sit here right now.

This is what I was thinking. Schools will focus on players already at D1 level who have proven they can play and then go hard after them. High school recruits will move to lower priority. Instead of having a player for three years it will be massive turnover every season. Maybe you get a player for two years, but probably lots of college football's version of one and done.

Time to get a portal expert on staff!

Yea, makes no sense for a player seen as a "project" to go to a bigger P5 school, where within a year or two they will just get pushed out for transfers or bought higher rated recruits. Might as well go to the G5, prove yourself there, and then jump to the P5.

Ah. I see.

How many are draft worthy though? something like 1%?
i get your point... it's not a big number.

but it's big enough.

i'd say that all/most of the players in the two-deep at least at the P5 schools would tell you that they have a shot at getting drafted. and i'd guess that those players' agents would tell them not to take the chance of getting hurt or not looking good in a game that isn't putting any money in their family's pockets. and i wouldn't blame them one bit.

the ncaa has done this to itself. in the end it (and the schools) will make less money. and given the decades of making money on the backs of amateur athletes, i'd say it's kind of like karma.

G5 would be like a farm system for the P5.

Not sure if it was mentioned but saw Jestin Jacobs Iowa LB entered the portal.
From Northmont. I know we recruited him but can’t recall if we offered.
I lost track of him but apparently was in the Butkus pre-season watch list but was hurt basically all year.

I’m keeping an eye out for Luke Lachey.
Especially with Ale transferring there.
I posit perhaps we have made contact but have agreed to wait until after signing day so as to not impact our TE recruit.

Same for Lorenzo Styles.

I could easily see a European professional soccer club structure taking place. One level feeds up into another.
We’re getting closer to the Super Conference that so many have talked about in the past 20yrs. I know I’ve mentioned it at least 10yrs ago, and most people scoffed. But I really believe we’ll see a conference of the best teams from all over the country playing one another, and no more early season cupcakes, or SEC scheduling teams like Furman or Kennesaw St in November.

And to bring this back around to Portal talk. Don’t be surprised if a number of these kids return to their prior school and were looking for a bigger NIL deal(like free agency). And I’m sure a bunch of kids are just looking for decent PT, not all in the portal are doing this for a paycheck. I’m sure they do want PT to get :cash: though. So essentially coaches can never stop recruiting

Totally agree. The only way you can make a playoff format work is if everyone plays a, roughly, equal schedule. NFL divisions wax and wane sometimes with their relative strength but they are all NFL teams with NFL caliber players. No one is arguing SOS at the end of the year for seeding/rankings. You just play out the schedule and you are what your record says you are.

That HAS to be coming in this 12 team format or you are incentivizing teams to take the easiest road possible.
