Look Who's Transferring Now (The Basketball Portal)

It is becoming waaay too easy to transfer and become immediately eligible. A player's word is not going to mean squat much longer and it is going to ruin "college" athletics if they have not been ruined already.

MLB drafts high school graduates and college players, if they don't sign by a given date they (can still play college ball and) are just in the MLB draft again the next year, etc.
I do not think that is totally accurate. If a high school baseball player is drafted but enrolls in college he must stay in college for 3 years before he can play in the Majors.

I do not think that is totally accurate. If a high school baseball player is drafted but enrolls in college he must stay in college for 3 years before he can play in the Majors.

(If I'm reading it right) you could be correct for players attending 4 year colleges:

Official Rules

The Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft is held every year in June by conference call among the 30 Major League Clubs. The Clubs take turns selecting players in reverse order of their won-lost records at the close of the previous regular season. The order of selection is without regard to League.

The Major League Rules govern which players are eligible for selection in the Draft. These Rules are detailed, but the basic eligibility criteria can be described as follows: Generally, a player is eligible for selection if the player is a resident of the United States or Canada and the player has never before signed a Major League or Minor League contract. Residents of Puerto Rico and other territories of the United States are eligible for the Draft. Also considered residents are players who enroll in a high school or college in the United States, regardless of where they are from originally.

Certain groups of players are ineligible for selection, generally because they are still in school. The basic categories of players eligible to be drafted are:
  • High school players, if they have graduated from high school and have not yet attended college or junior college;
  • College players, from four-year colleges who have either completed their junior or senior years or are at least 21 years old; and
  • Junior college players, regardless of how many years of school they have completed
A Club generally retains the rights to sign a selected player until 11:59 PM (EDT) August 15, or until the player enters, or returns to, a four-year college on a full-time basis. A player who is drafted and does not sign with the Club that selected him may be drafted again at a future year's Draft, so long as the player is eligible for that year's Draft. A Club may not select a player again in a subsequent year, unless the player has consented to the re-selection.

A player who is eligible to be selected and is passed over by every Club becomes a free agent and may sign with any Club until the player enters, or returns to, a four-year college full-time or enters, or returns to, a junior college.

This description is a general one and the Major League Rules themselves, not this summary, govern eligibility issues. Players and coaches with questions about particular players are referred to the Baseball Operations Department at the Office of the Commissioner of Baseball.

Oral Roberts star forward Kevin Obanor enters transfer portal

Oral Roberts star forward Kevin Obanor has entered his name into the NCAA transfer portal as a graduate transfer, 247Sports has learned. One of the breakout stars of the NCAA Tournament, Obanor earned first-team All-Summit honors in 2020 after averaging 18.7 points and 9.6 rebounds, while shooting 46.3% from three-point range.

Just sayin': He only scored 30 points and got 11 rebounds against Ohio State. I wish he would have transferred last summer......:biggrin2:

This is a weird new era we're in.

Whatever the impact of NIL and easy transfers on football, it is orders of magnitude greater in basketball.

Not only can one player turn a program on a dime, but the smaller number of players overall makes the spotlight that much brighter on each, and the NIL money will follow accordingly.

The days of a Cinderella team coming out of nowhere on the backs of an unranked star may be numbered. The majority of schools are now becoming a minor league system for the big boys. I could even see a coach at an elite program encouraging a kid to go play somewhere else for a year or two and then transfer in once he is ready.

Never thought of using 'lesser' programs as a feeder for an elite program, but certainly can see that visualization. If doesn't pan out, coach has lost nothing. If the kid does, the coach could face serious competition from teams higher on the food chain for the kid's services. Yeah, it's not Kansas anymore is it Toto? But the sport will adapt, as usual. Bball has always had the smaller schools competing and beating larger schools, simply because it's easier to get five good players than 22 (football). Actually, three really good players and two OK players = Nati. NCAA has put this in play with the 'one time transfer, no loss of eligibility' trick that came out of this Covid stuff. It certainly solved a current problem, but believe it's going to create a tremendously enormous problem down the road. Piss-poor planning on the No Consistency At All's part. Now how does tOSU get theirs?

Texas is winning the transfer portal this season. Five college basketball veterans were added to Texas via the portal, and some pretty successful ones at that.

Marcus Carr: 19.4 ppg
Christian Bishop: 11.0 ppg
Dylan Disu: 15.0 ppg
Timmy Allen: 17.2 ppg
Devin Askew: 6.5 ppg
--------------------------
69.1 ppg

Yeah, that was a real nice haul. They should give Kansas and Baylor a run for their money in the Big XII.

Pete Nance, best available player in basketball portal, transferring to North Carolina from Northwestern

Potential preseason No. 1 team North Carolina has landed Northwestern transfer Pete Nance, the best available player in the men's basketball portal.

Nance visited Chapel Hill earlier this week and announced his decision via Twitter on Saturday afternoon.

Nance initially entered the NBA draft -- also putting his name in the transfer portal -- but opted to withdraw before the early-entry deadline to play one more year of college basketball. A 6-foot-10 forward, he earned honorable mention All-Big Ten honors from the media last season after averaging 14.6 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game and shooting 45.2% from 3-point range. He had six 20-point outings, including a 28-point, 14-rebound, 4-assist effort against Maryland in January.

With Brady Manek leaving, Nance should fit seamlessly into North Carolina's starting lineup next season. Manek provided energy next to Armando Bacot in the Tar Heels' frontcourt while shooting better than 40% from 3 as a 6-9 power forward. Nance, who was No. 7 in ESPN's transfer rankings, will replace his size and shooting.
