Tressel happy Carr went out a winner
JASON LLOYD, Morning Journal Writer
01/03/2008

NEW ORLEANS -- Michigan figured out something Ohio State never could on Tuesday -- how to beat Florida.

The Wolverines' wild victory over the Gators in the Capital One Bowl sent Lloyd Carr out victorious. The scene even brought a smile to Jim Tressel.

Tressel arguably played a large role in Carr's retirement, spanking him six times in seven games between the two rivals. But since OSU wasn't involved, Tressel was allowed to root for Carr and Michigan.

''I felt great,'' Tressel said yesterday. ''Lloyd Carr is one of the gentleman in our profession. To see his team respond and play so well, obviously they're members of our conference and we're proud of that.

''Lloyd Carr has had an extraordinary career. If you look at his resume and what he has accomplished, it's always nice to see someone end that way.''

Toomer feeling left out.

dispatch

The Detroit Free Press recently published a Q&A with New York Giants receiver Amani Toomer, in which the former Michigan standout indicated he wasn't pleased with former coach Lloyd Carr or his alma mater.
When Toomer was asked whether he had heard from Carr or any former teammates after the Giants' Super Bowl win, he was blunt:

"No, the last time I heard a word from Lloyd was when I was playing in a (Michigan) game," Toomer said. "It was my last play of my senior year. I caught a touchdown pass from Brian Griese, and I was walking off the field and Lloyd looks at me, looks at Griese, looks at me again and goes, 'Good throw, Brian.' And that's the last thing he ever said in my direction."
Toomer also said he doesn't "keep in touch with any" of his former college teammates and added that he envies Giants teammate Plaxico Burress, who went to Michigan State.

"They welcome him with open arms," Toomer said. "I'm definitely kind of jealous about that ? but I don't really have any ties."

This has been mentioned in other threads, but it belongs here as well.

Report: Lloyd Carr helped Justin Boren in release

From Rob Oller's column in Thursday's Columbus Dispatch, regarding former Michigan offensive lineman Justin Boren, who has transferred to Ohio State:

Maybe they should take a cue from previous Michigan coach Lloyd Carr, who according to a source close to the situation worked behind the scenes to help Boren obtain his scholarship release from Michigan. Carr even assured Boren that Ohio State is the closest thing to Michigan that he would find and that there are "good people" in Columbus.

But only the naive can think Boren will get a free pass now that he's left the Big House for the Horseshoe. After all, this was the kid who chose Michigan over Ohio State in the first place, whose father, Mike, played at Michigan under coach Bo Schembechler.

Carr disputes report he helped player transfer to OSU
Associated Press

ANN ARBOR ? Lloyd Carr reacted Friday night to a report that indicated he helped Justin Boren get his release from Michigan and complimented Ohio State's program before the offensive lineman transferred earlier this week.
The Columbus Dispatch reported in a column Thursday that Carr, according to an unnamed person close to the situation, told Boren that Ohio State is the closest thing to Michigan that he would find and there are "good people" in Columbus.

That's a lie," Carr said through school spokesman Bruce Madej.

I can't find a link for this, but it's in the print copy of the Detroit News. Carr was "furious" and "livid" when reached at home regarding the suggestion by Oller that he worked behind the scenes to help the transfer to OSU. Called it a lie.

It sounds silly to me. Since when has there been any "behind-the-scenes" work necessary to secure a scholarship release? Michigan has never been heavy-handed in trying to force people to stay. If they want to leave, they leave. In the same column, Oller suggested it would be "naive" to think OSU fans would accept the transferring player with open arms. Missed the boat on that one, too. I trust Carr over some unnamed source in a column that shows the writer is out of touch with the fanbase.

In the blogs ---

Lloyd Carr retired. He didn't suddenly become senile.
Help a Michigan player transfer to Ohio State? Are you kidding?
A column in Thursday's Columbus Dispatch about Justin Boren, the former Michigan offensive lineman who has transferred to OSU, has Carr furious.
"Maybe they should take a cue from previous Michigan coach Lloyd Carr, who according to a source close to the situation worked behind the scenes to help Boren obtain his scholarship release from Michigan," Rob Oller wrote. "Carr even assured Boren that Ohio State is the closest thing to Michigan that he would find and that there are 'good people' in Columbus."
I can't remember the last time I heard Carr as livid as he was Friday night during a brief phone conversation.
He didn't mince words.
"It's a lie," Carr said, angrily. "That's a lie! That's it."
End of conversation. Well, pretty much. Trust me, there were a few other ways he said it was all a lie, and I don't think Carr was taking a cue from his Academy Award-winning buddy Russell Crowe. This was not acting. His response was real. Angrily real.

I have to say when I read that he had suggested Boren consider tOSU, I was surprised and a little skeptical. It has long been my impression that Carr is not overly enamored with JT. It does raise a slightly amusing question, however. From whom did Oller get his information and why would the person make such a statement?

I wouldn't be surprised if some journalists hide behind the "cannot reveal my sources" law and take literary licenses with what they print. It is unfortunate, but it is the reality of our world right now.

I am quite sure they do. But this would be a matter of complete fabrication. While I'm sure it happens, I suspect Oller talked to someone. Doesn't make the story true, though

I don't doubt that LC spoke to Justin about the transfer, and might have actually said good things about our wonderful institution.

However, the way the article was written sounded like he was undermining UM and the new staff.

I'd be a little upset about the leak, and the way the column was written (and I'm not nearly as surly as he is).
