To say it was always in my plans, I can't say it was always in my plans because I never thought it was possible." In that one little hedging moment he starts, ever so slightly, to smile. And everybody knew what that smile meant: it meant, "What the fuck do you think? Of course, we've been planning this for years." So he smiles, giving the deal away completely, then instantly switches gears and just turbo-lies right into the camera. I thought: this is just like politics! A terrible, totally unskilled liar, telling a completely transparent lie, who then improbably gets let off the hook by the sycophantic moron interviewing him. What is it about this story we love so much?

actually he was a co owner of the pirates, along with two others including bing crosby...

born in derby ohio. farms in galloway and lexington. had two derby winners and littler current won the preakness and the belmont in 74. he was the chairman of churchill downs.

huger booster. huge recruiter, back when boosters were a part of all that...

Which a) is not what I said, and B) neatly ignores posts in between in which I'm told he tried to buy the Indians first and which I acknowledged.
So why is it again that the people in Cleveland should be just as up in arms that George didn't buy the Indians and put that much money into them as he did into the Yankees, as they are with LBJ?

Well, if my first premise was wrong then it doesn't matter what my second premise was, does it? It does strike me as ... hmmm, 'odd' isn't quite what I want to say... how about 'off?'--- to be so angry at James for deciding to make his money in Miami and so quiet about Steinbrenner spending his in NYC. Seems to me that in a discussion centered on 'loyalty' neither man did Cleveland right -- throw in that sumbitch Modell who was making money in a stadium already paid for, but left for a town that would build him a new one.

Another question. I'm from Columbus and have no dog in any Cleveland-Cincinnati rivalry. In fact, I like both cities a lot. But is it a coincidence that the majority of those ripping Cavs fans and supporting LBJ seem to be from SW Ohio?

If asked where I'm 'from' the answer is Dayton. If asked where I live the answer is Cincinnati. If asked where my loyalties lie, it's Ohio.

My support for James is limited to his right to play ball wherever he feels he has the best opportunity to accomplish his personal goals -- in basketball, business or life. Just for the record, I was not among those ripping Pete Rose for choosing to go to Philly and for the very same reason, though I was very sorry to see him go.

Not what I'm mad about. I'm mad about him playing the state of Ohio like a fiddle, fooling everyone that believed his bull[censored] about bringing a championship and not quitting until he does. I'm [censored]ed off that he took the biggest [censored] on a sports team that any player ever has on national television. I'm irritated that he dragged the team I love through this [censored] when the decision was made a long time ago. Most importantly, I'm [censored]ed off that he isn't the kid he was 7 years ago, anymore, and he is now a narcissistic monster with little or no motivation to live up to the expectations the NBA world had for him. He is the NBA's A-Rod. That will be his legacy from here on out.

not what it used to be certainly. even though port newark/elizabeth still hums, the docks on redhook are slow, but a manhattan terminal has a berth now again.

then again the boss had enough with the unions in the 80s and moved all operations south to avoid the longshoreman and other unions of lorain and the other northern facilities...

?Finally tonight, a few words about championship rings. Just when did they become the all-important barometer of who does or doesn?t count in sports? When did they supersede personal excellence or exemplary character as a standard of greatness?

I don't entirely agree with this. The media is always happy to jump a guy for putting personal goals and achievements ahead of championships....but now the focus is too much on rings? Yeah, Marino is revered as a Dolphin, but anytime he gets mentioned, it's brought up that he never won the Super Bowl.

If Lebron had taken less money and sacrificed some measure of his stardom to get Wade and Bosh to Cleveland, everyone would talk about how selfless and committed to winning he is, not about how championships had become more important than personal excellence.

In a way, I almost admire the decision he made to sacrifice his status as the star of a team so that he would have a better shot at winning a championship. Almost.
