Lebron James (Los Angeles Lakers)

My allegiences lie with family, friends, high school, hometown, state of Ohio, The Ohio State University, The University of Akron, Cleveland sports, the United States of America and the human race.

Lebron does not have the same allegiences, nor is he required to do so. However, I feel the same way about him as I would feel if Tim Howard or Landon Donovan left the U.S. to become a Spanish citizen so he'd have a better chance of winning the World Cup. They'd have every right to do so, and I would have every right to call them traitors.

Lebron is a traitor. Plain and simple.
Eh. National Pride is a tad more important than State Pride in my book, but to each his own.

so what would happened if LeBron had been drafted by a team in a different state? Would he have been a traitor if he signed with them and played?

Lebron didn't do anything to the Indians or their fans, or the Browns or their fans. Lebron != Ohio. Cavs fan != Indians fan != Browns fan != Ohio State fan.

Never suggested Lebron == Ohio && Cavs fan == Indians fan && Browns fan == Ohio State fan.

And he did bone the Indians...

As I've gotten to know LeBron, LeBron isn't a Cleveland guy. LeBron only plays for the Cavaliers, and who knows if he even likes the Cavaliers? He doesn't like the Indians. He doesn't like the Browns. He's a guy from Akron who likes everybody but his hometown.

We all should have seen it coming...

I already know what you're thinking, you're taking Braylon's side and saying he can root for whomever he wants. I don't disagree with that, but there is a certain level of disrespect that you are showing your hometown by taking it as far as he does--and I am a Reds and Bengals fan!

I also never said anything about Ohio State--strangely he seems loyal to the Buckeyes. But then again, what other college football team mattered in Cleveland during his youth?

You do understand this wouldn't be the same correct?

LeBron James wouldn't be to Cavs fans and Ohioans what he is today had he never been drafted by the Cavs. He would have been just what he was at the time, a legendary high school player that went straight to the pros--too bad we didn't get him.

tOSU won the NC his senior year so that must have left quite an impression on him

Exactly, what team does he like didn't win a championship in his youth? The Yankees and Cowboys were legendary when he was growing up, so were his favorite NBA team--the Bulls. That is something he seems to value--dynasties. He wants to be a part of one, not necessarily the architect.

I also think some people greatly underestimate how run-of-the-mill Ohioans felt about him. I have tons of friends and family that never really watched NBA games, cared about them, or cared about the Cavaliers. However, the story of a kid growing up near Cleveland and possibly being the greatest of all time, playing for his hometown team, and possibly saving that city from its drought and agony over the past 50 years was just too good for many of them to pass up. Even here in SW Ohio. I have grandparents that adored him because of this. They're a lot less in-tune with what is going on and they are heartbroken!

Things would be different obviously because he wouldn't have had any choice in the matter. He also wouldn't have been in the position to pretend to have a bond with Cleveland or to promise the city a championship. But he did do that.

Let's give a couple of examples:

1. Charles Woodson: Traitor. He had a choice and he chose to leave the State of Ohio to play for the hated rival. Now he never pretended to profess any love for Ohio or this university, but fuck him nonetheless. And I do think its ok if a Michigander feels the same way about Vernon Gholsten.

2. Michael Redd. Grew up in central Ohio, played for the Buckeyes and left (against advice) early. A lot of people were upset that he left early, but moreso because we believe he needed another year. [See reaction to Greg Oden's departure for the flipside]. He was drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks; proved the detractors wrong; and became an All Star/Olympian. He also became an unrestricted free agent in 2005. The Cavs wooed him to return to Ohio. He decided to stay with the team that drafted. Not one Cavs' fan that I know called him a traitor. We all respected his decision to stay loyal to the Bucks.

3. Lebron James. Fuck him. That is all.

This is a ridiculous question because he would have no control over where he was drafted. It's that he came to Cleveland as "the chosen one", played up the hometown boy resurrects his hometown team angle, left, how he left, strung along Cavs FO/fans, the promise of titles, loyalty, etc...

No, it's a very, very dumb question.
