Lebron James (Los Angeles Lakers)

The irony of him saying that someone else wasn’t educated on the issue is palpable.
He then went on to admit he wasn’t, after saying someone else wasn’t who had an opinion that cost him money.

Yes, fuck LeBron and all of these guys. Social justice apparently only when financially expedient...EABOD

Yeah, pretty much fuck Lebron. James social conscious seems to abruptly come to a screeching halt the moment it interferes with his bank account. At least Michael Jordan was honest about his lack of caring about anything other than Michael Jordan.

Yeah, and his follow up ramble was even worse because it really demonstrated LeBron's unwillingness to say anything at all:

"I believe he was misinformed or not really educated on the situation," James said of Morey. "If he was, so be it. I have no idea, but that’s my belief. When you say things or do things, you’re doing it and know the things that can be affected by it and the families and individuals that can be affected by it. Sometimes it can be changed as well. Sometimes social media is not a proper way to go about things as well. That’s just my belief."

I mean, I guess it's easier to pile on right now, but to be fair he did say the tweet "could have waited a week."

Not that he disagrees with it, just that he was pissed him and his teammates were physically in China when that comment was made and it made things volatile over there. Same thing as a politician tweeting something that may put people overseas at risk.

He is messing a lot of his words up, but I don't think he's all of a sudden anti-democratic. Just...be careful who you put in harms way when you rile groups up. There are people in way worse harm in HK right now, but selfishly LeBron did not like being included in the crossfire.

And he's always been about his brand and money. Him and every other billionaire.

I'd say that's true but not the whole story. More like that in today's increasingly fractured and neo-tribal society, for many people social justice matters only when it's your "tribe" that's not getting it. In other words, for LeBron, black lives matter. Yellow lives, maybe not so much.

It is a no-win scenario for LeBron to comment on Chinese politics. Of course he does not approve of all of the actions of China's government, but at the end of the day he and his teammates (which for many of whom a possible 15% reduction of their salary isn't trivial) is part of a large scale business that is significantly boosted by Chinese fan support. NBA folks speaking their conscience could literally cause the entire league a 15% pay cut by alienating China. "No comment" was probably the best thing for him to say. You either risk costing yourself and your NBA colleagues a big financial hit to take the moral high road, which accomplishes nothing, or be a hypocrite and shut up and dribble for the financial benefit of the league. Neither option is a perfect decision as there were positives and negatives for each possibility.
