LB Trey Johnson (Official Thread)

gatorcountry - Florida Battles OSU for LB Trey Johnson

12/1

The Gators have three linebackers verbally committed for the Class of 2013, but are continuing to look for a fourth.

One of those prospects getting a look is Lawrenceville (Ga.) Central Gwinnett linebacker Trey Johnson, who recently de-committed from Auburn.

The 6-foot-1, 222-pound Johnson was supposed to officially visit Gainesville Dec. 15, but that visit has now been pushed back.

Anyone willing to guess how the Malzahn hire affects this one ? I know it's really too soon to get an idea of how it will, but I think it boils down to whether or not Tommy Thigpen stays or goes. Thoughts ?

I really don't think this is a "Wow" hire.

Really? Wasn't cam newton being in his offense the reason they won the NC in 2010?

2010 was all Cam Newton... look at their record with most of the same players - Newton the next year... not quite as good and Malzahn was still there

Cam Newton was a talent. Malzahn brings a trendy offense with him, but he's still a few years out of being a high school Coach and coming from Arkansas State most recently. Not saying he won't be successful, but certainly not the credentials to impress a recruit IMO. Not the level of a Strong, Gruden or Petrino to name a few. Lacks a big track record as a Head Coach.

Gotcha! See what you're saying. I just figured thatd be his pitch to recruits that he was part of the reason auburn won an NC. And I'm just as shocked by this hire. Guess auburn figures he'll work some magic. Not sure how he'll derail the saban/Alabama train though or even miles in lsu

And more importantly how will malzahn who's known as a offensive solely coach keep their tremendous defensive recruits? Smart would've done that, but not sure how Johnson looks at auburn again with a new coach who is going to try and outscore everyone, imo

Oh you know what I mean lol
He's not known for defense
I don't think hiring a coach known for innovative and explosive offense will turn off defense recruits at all.

Malzahn is a strong hire, at least for the short-term outlook. We'll see whether his one year as head coach in the Sun Belt Conference equips him well to coach in the S-E-C.

The issue with Malzahn is less whether or not he is or will be a good coach, its more that recruiting is about building up the best relationship with a kid. Urban's magic from last year aside, its typically very hard for any new coach to swoop in on a highly-recruited player with only a couple months to go and displace relationships that have been more than a year in development.
