LB Scott McVey (official thread)

Found some reasoning for why Scott's getting no love from Rivals. Anyone care to verify/refute size?

5'9"??? I've not seen Scott in person and I can't pretend to know how tall he actually is, but that's a 4 inch difference from what has been reported elsewhere. I find it VERY hard to believe such a discrepency could realistically be passed over by others, if in fact he is closer to 5'9". When Farrell speaks, my opinion generally drifts in the opposite direction.

5'9 is a terrible misinformation. He is 6'. Scott's injury isn't really that serious but he is expected to miss the next two games as an fyi.

Rivals $

10/15

From the Road...review of McVey's game against Warren Harding, where he didn't fill up the stat sheet like he normally does but was constantly applying pressure...the only knock on him continues to be whether he will have the size to play up at the line of scrimmage in college.

Also some nice comments about Mike Dorsey and Davion Rogers...

St. Ignatius rides turnovers to victory over St. Xavier
Bob Fortuna, Plain Dealer Reporter, October 24, 2009

St. Xavier held a 95-47 edge in rushing yards in the first half, but managed just 31 yards in the second half because of Wildcat adjustments, namely giving senior linebacker/Ohio State recruit Scott McVey more freedom to cause more havoc.

"Scott was coming from more like a safety position in the second half but the other guys also responded well when we called a blitz," said St. Ignatius coach Chuck Kyle.

OhioVarsity.com - Wildcats claw past Bombers (free)

"Turnovers kind of saved us in the first half," admitted St. Ignatius standout linebacker Scott McVey. "In the second half we were able to do what we had to do."

That they did.

The opportunistic St. Ignatius 3-3-5 defense was once again the key as the Wildcats' built a lead they would never relinquish. Following a 36-yard Franklin field goal, St. Ignatius safety George Newrones picked off a pass over the middle by Massa, who was under intense heat from McVey and fellow linebacker Jake Ryan. Newrones returned it the other way for a 33-yard touchdown and 16-7 lead midway through the third.

The coaches definitely told me to let it rip," explained McVey of his heavy blitzing. "But it's always a challenge going against (St. Xavier blue-chip tackle) Matt James."

St. Ignatius completes perfect regular season, blanking St. Edward

Tim Warsinskey, The Plain Dealer, October 31, 2009 8:19 p.m.

LAKEWOOD, Ohio -- Coaches love to say about rivalries such as this: Throw out the records, they're meaningless.
Not so fast.
. . .
Myers led an 80-yard drive to start the second half, throwing for 73 yards. Grebenc scored on a 1-yard run to the right corner behind fullback Scott McVey.

Eye is on the Big 'O': Lyndhurst resident McVey set to sign with Buckeyes today
Published: Wednesday, February 3, 2010

Scott McVey couldn't help but to be impressed as he stood on the sideline at Ohio Stadium Aug. 31, 2008.

In his first trip to The 'Shoe, the St. Ignatius junior linebacker glanced around at the 105,000-plus fans who came to Ohio State's season-opener against visiting Youngstown State.

Moments later, chills went down McVey's spine when the Buckeyes sprinted from the tunnel on southeast corner of the stadium, with the roar of the crowd drowning out the playing of OSU's fight song, "Across the Field."

He was hooked.

"Loved it," said McVey, a Lyndhurst resident. "It was definitely a thrill to be there and see it all. It's a crazy atmosphere.

"The one thing I've always thought about it what it would be like running out of that tunnel. That would be an indescribable feeling."

One of which he will be able to talk about in more detail later on this fall when he experiences it for himself.

McVey is one of 18 recruits expected to sign a national letter of intent today to play football at Ohio State. There will be a signing ceremony at St. Ignatius in the afternoon, where McVey and teammates Mark Meyer (Pitt) and Jake Ryan (Michigan), among others, will sign their letters of intent and fax them to their respective schools to formally commit.

It's a day McVey has anxiously awaited for some time now.

"I'm really excited to be an official member of the team," he said. "I've loved Ohio State my entire life. I'm looking forward to signing and getting started."

Excited about this kid. Love his insticts on defense, which look to be on the level of a Ross Homan (at his age) and comparable with AJ Hawk. If he can put the other things together, he could be a special one.

Thanks for sharing this article from "my" local paper with the rest of the Buckeye Nation.

Watching the local Cleveland News tonight and watching Scott sign his letter alongside teammate "Jake" who is headed to scUM. Scott looked extremely focused and intense. Side by side there is no comparison. I know "Jake" got the pub this year because of Scott's injury. Remember, Scott was Player of the Year in the state last year as a junior. Next to one another, Scott is much wider and just has that "nasty" look compared to his (now) rival who physically just doesn't seem to measure up.

This kid is gonna be an absolute bitch.

Welcome aboard Scott, The Buckeye nation can't wait to see YOU run out that tunnel!

Peace

Ohio State on St. Ignatius linebacker and new Buckeye Scott McVey: Video
By Doug Lesmerises, The Plain Dealer
February 04, 2010, 3:50PM

Ohio State assistant coach Taver Johnson compared St. Ignatius linebacker Scott McVey to OSU linebacker Ross Homan when describing him on Wednesday when the Buckeyes announced their recruiting class. Asked if McVey, a 6-footer, might be a little undersized at linebacker, Johnson mentioned another current Buckeye starter at linebacker.

"I think he'll be fine," Johnson said. "You have Brian Rolle, he's 5-11. We'll take those guys who are explosive and mean and will take your head off."
Johnson said it was McVey's entire performance as a junior that caught Ohio State's attention, not just his great run in the playoffs. Also key was McVey's performance as a high hurdler - the Buckeyes love to see players exhibit their athleticism in other sports. Johnson also talked about McVey's straight forward approach when you meet him, calling him a no-nonsense guy.

Here's more from Johnson, who begins by talking about McVey playing through an injury.
