LB Ryan Shazier (All B1G, All-American, 2017 Pro Bowl)

I'm not so sure Sweat, Klein and Bino will have an answer for the speed of Martinez and Wilson. Did Bino even play Saturday? (Rhetorical question)

One day it will be Shaziers time ... he has shown great promise so far but
I'm not so sure pure speed is the answer if your not in the right places ... stopping Martinez, Wilson and Denard will be more about playing gap sound football and being in the right place than speed. One freshman mistake getting out of position against those guys and its 6.

Right now, the defense is not up to Silver Bullet standards. They are in the middle of the league right now in yards per play given up. We need guys that make plays, regardless of their familiarity with the scheme. This means more Shazier.

Ohio State football notebook: Freshman Shazier will see field more
By Tim May
The Columbus Dispatch Wednesday September 28, 2011

There?s no denying the flash Ryan Shazier has shown on Ohio State?s special teams and occasionally on defense. That?s why the freshman might be seeing more time at linebacker, beginning Saturday against Michigan State.

?Ryan has done a great job,? coach Luke Fickell said yesterday. ?Ryan I think played 27, 28 snaps last week in the game, in situations when the game was obviously still early. ? He?s done a great job special teams-wise. He?s going to be a very, very good football player.

?He?s got a knack for the ball. He can run. We can get some special things out of him. We need him. He?s one of the four guys in the (linebacker) rotation.

Senior backup linebacker and special-teams performer Nate Oliver has seen similar things in Shazier.

?He?s a great young player; he?s raw,? Oliver said. ?He played defensive end in high school. He?s a linebacker (now). But as far as special teams have been going, he?s been doing a great job. He?s going out flying around. He?s got a bright future here at Ohio State.?

As for the linebacker side of things, the improvement is obvious, Oliver said.

?Ryan gets better every day,? he said. ?He wants to learn a lot; that?s one good thing about him, he?s young but he also wants to learn. And he soaks stuff up like a sponge.?

Turning back the clock to the 1970's, Ryan reminds me of two great Buckeye DE/LB's who were somewhat undersized yet had football instincts you could never teach, and played with such tenacity that the opposition always had to be aware of their presence. The two that I'm thinking of are Van DeCree and Kelton Dansler.

Peace

Edge guys on Woody's old 5-2 defensive front. For those that don't know him, DeCree was a 2-time first team All-American in '73 and '74.

Van was a beast! He never weighed more than 205 on a heavy day! :tongue2: But I actually think Shazier is faster!

Looks like coach said it to me. I see nothing misleading. He said he was in on about half the defensive snaps last game and that he is part of the linebacker rotation.

So describing how much Shazier played in the last game and pointing out that he's already part of the linebacker rotation means that playing time will increase even more in future games? Got it.
