LB Ross Homan (official thread)

"Optimum Scouting has a mid-day report too. One name of note is linebacker Ross Homan...of Ohio State, which automatically makes him a fit for the Rams, I kid. Anyway, OS said that he was the best LB on the field today when dropping back into coverage. Here's a scouting report on Homan. Can he bulk up and be a regular weakside linebacker or is he a slightly better version of Chris Chamberlain?"

"Tuesday Practice Notes: Very quick and a much better athlete than we thought. Solid range and good speed collapsing laterally. Works hard and intense the entire session"

Looks like Homan is starting to turn some heads!!!

Bucks look to stand out in Senior Bowl
By Danny Hicks

Updated: Thursday, January 27, 2011

The Senior Bowl, held in Mobile, Ala., is an opportunity for senior football players to showcase their talents in front of pro scouts and coaches.

And Former Ohio State football players Ross Homan and Dane Sanzenbacher were invited to the field.

Homan and Sanzenbacher understand the importance of the opportunity.

"The best players in the nation are out here, competing and trying to showcase their skills," Homan said.

Being at your best and separating yourself from the rest is something Homan said is crucial in a game like this.

"It's very important. You're always being evaluated every time you step on the field," Homan said. "It's a huge job interview; that's the way I look at it."

Sanzenbacher agreed.

"It's an opportunity for you to show your talents and stand out from everybody else," he said.

Since the Sugar Bowl, Homan and Sanzenbacher have been training for the NFL draft process. Both were recently invited to the NFL Combine, and both said they plan to attend.

Ross Homan, Ohio State -- Hey, the last time the Rams drafted a linebacker from Ohio State it worked out pretty well, so why not again?

Homan is an interesting case in that he's on the smallish side (6'0", 230 lbs), but his skillset seems better suited to the strongside position than over on the weak side. He's strong and excels at filling gaps and making the stop, but struggles in open space at times. He was a monster in coverage his junior season but didn't play nearly as well this year. Still, his production numbers were very good, and he has the same solid tackling profile as his fellow OSU alum Laurinaitis.

Unless Homan goes completely crazy at the Senior Bowl or the Combine, it looks like he'll probably go somewhere in the 3-5 round range. If he's available when the Rams go on the clock in one of those middle rounds they could do much, much worse than to add such a consistent, productive defensive player to the mix.

http://blogs.riverfronttimes.com/dailyrft/2011/01/rams_draft_2011_looking_for_linebackers.php

Monday Practice Notes: Used at both middle and on the outside. Struggled in coverage yet played well against the run. Very effective in the box or up the field but not so much in reverse.

Tuesday Practice Notes: On a day when running the ball was the main priority in practice, Homan sniffed out plays well.

Wednesday Practice Notes: Athletic and quick, Does a nice job flowing to the ball and plays with a good degree of suddenness. Not strong and gets caught up in the wash or lost out in battles during coverage drills.

Homan hopes to sign more than autographs for fans
OSU linebacker projected as a 4th-round NFL draft choice, but bargaining agreement comes first.

MIAMI TWP., Montgomery Conty ? Pittsburgh Steelers merchandise was outselling the Green Bay Packers by a closer than expected two-to-one margin at Cardboard Heroes in the Dayton Mall on Sunday.

Neither, though, was the biggest draw this Super Bowl Sunday.

Ohio State University linebacker Ross Homan ? a 2006 graduate of Coldwater High School ? stopped by in the afternoon to sign autographs, pose for photos and greet Buckeyes fans during a two-hour session.

?It?s pretty crazy. You go anywhere ... just like last week I was at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama, and you?d be surprised just how many Ohio State fans are in Mobile. The fan base is definitely nationwide,? said Homan, who had three tackles in the North?s 24-10 loss to the South on Jan. 29.

On Sunday the 6-foot, 227-pound linebacker was back in Big Ten Country signing the obligatory merchandise ? Ohio State helmets, footballs, hats, jerseys and magazines ? and looking right at home in his red Under Armour pullover and jeans wrapping his arms around fans while posing for photos and flashing his easy-going smile.

One couple drove a little over two hours from Lexington, Ky., to add Homan?s autograph to their football shrine of 200 signatures.

So what?s the most unusual thing he?s ever been asked to autograph?

?I?ve signed some baby clothes, that?s probably the strangest thing,? Homan said. ?It hasn?t been too strange yet.?

The item Homan wants placed in front of him most is an NFL contract. Early predictions from draft web sites have the three-year starter at Ohio State and first-team Big Ten selection as a fourth rounder. Cousin Bobby Hoying, a quarterback at Ohio State, was a third-round selection (85th overall) by the Philadelphia Eagles in 1996.

?I have no idea. I don?t think anyone really knows,? said Homan, who finished his OSU career with 288 career tackles, including nine in the Sugar Bowl win over Arkansas. ?That?s just how the draft is. I?m just going to keep working hard and control what I can control. I don?t really get into the blogs or the mock drafts. I just focus on my training and go from there.?

Ross Homan
OLB, Ohio State

War Room analysis
Against inside run: Is a tough, physical, downhill run defender. Shows good strength on contact, but really struggles to shed once engaged with bigger blockers within the box. Questionable arm length based on the way he takes on blockers in game film. Plays with outstanding lower-body flexibility, leverage, and pad level near the line of scrimmage. Grade: 7.5

Against outside run: Is an outstanding run defender on the perimeter and in the open field. Is a sure tackler on the move in the open field. Plays hard in backside pursuit and takes proper angles to the ball. Has the range to play sideline-to-sideline when unblocked. Struggles to shed once engaged, just like he does within the box. Is a physical tackler, capable of making the big hit on the move. Grade: 8.0

Run/pass recognition: Has exceptional run/pass recognition, instincts, and awareness in all situations. Is quick to read and react to blocking schemes as a run defender. Shows tremendous anticipation skills as an underneath zone defender and has the ball skills and run-after-catch ability of a small-college running back after the interception. Can react to what he sees as the play develops. Grade: 8.5

Blitz/coverage: Has shown to be a good pass rusher in limited opportunities. Will slow-up before contact at times, even when going-up against a running back in pass protection. Is highly effective on run blitzes, where he uses his great timing and awareness to play on the other side of the line of scrimmage. Is an exceptional zone defender, but only an above average man-to-man coverage player. Shows great anticipation for underneath routes and keys on the quarterbacks eyes as well. Does a great job of jamming and re-routing receivers within his zone. Lacks great long speed and reco to be a top man-to-man coverage player against a running back, a tight end, or a slot wide receiver down the field. Grade: 7.5

Pursuit/tackling: Plays hard in backside pursuit and takes proper angles to the ball. Has the range to play sideline-to-sideline when unblocked. Has good play speed and lateral range. Grade: 7.5

Bottom line: Homan is entering his second full season as the starter at weakside linebacker for the Buckeyes. He stays on the field for all of their defensive packages. He has excellent overall size with only average arm length for either weakside linebacker for a 4-3 scheme or inside linebacker for a 3-4 scheme at the next level.

Small town to big time

The northwest Ohio village of Coldwater, population 4,482, produced its first NFL combine invitee this year in Ohio State linebacker Ross Homan, something in which Homan said he took pride.

"From a small town, I've definitely taken a path," he said.

It brought back a memory of former Ohio State safety Donnie Nickey at the 2004 combine. Asked who was the most famous person from his hometown of Plain City, Nickey paused, then answered, "Me, I guess."

Homan said he felt some pressure to perform in the drills Monday, not necessarily for himself but for his mother, Alice.

"My mom always tells me she'll be watching," he said, "so I've got to put on a show for her, I guess."

NFL.com Staff
By NFL.com Staff
Published: February 27th, 2011

INDIANAPOLIS ? In what definitely was the B-side to Oregon State DT Stephen Paea?s hulking 49 reps in the 225-pound bench press Sunday, Ohio State?s Ross Homan led all linebackers at the NFL Scouting Combine with 32 lifts.

The 6-foot, 240-pound Homan ? viewed by some as an undersized, weakside backer with good instincts ? wasn?t the only Buckeye to crack the top 5, as Brian Rolle came in fourth with 28 reps.

Marquee prospect Von Miller from Texas A&M found himself well down the list with 21 reps, and Oregon?s Casey Matthews notched 13.

Here?s the top 5 among linebackers:

Homan: 32
Justin Houston, Georgia: 30
Mark Herzlich, Boston College: 29
Brian Rolle, Ohio State: 28
Orie Lemon, Oklahoma State: 27
