LB Ross Homan (official thread)

I tell you what, I don't know about you guys, but I am thrilled to prepare to watch our next group of talented LB's develop, and our defense as a whole. I've been watching some clips of Homan, Laurinaitis, Freeman, and the like, and I am starting to get over the loss of Hawk, Carp, and Schlegel. I really like this Homan kid, I think he is going to be one of the next great OSU linebackers.

This one's been kinda dead lately. Here some info, though a bit old, mostly unknown.

Ross was moved to MIKE for a short stint (3 weeks or so) in order to learn the position. He has now moved back to WILL, but the coaches wanted him to get some experience at MIKE. Not sure what that points to as far as the upcoming season, but hopefully he gets on the field somewhere.

I'm positive he'll be playing at least special teams, and I'm hopeful that he's playing some LB by Big Ten season.

Laurinitas also played a bit at the Mike position. I believe it is the coaches philosophy for a number of players to be familiar with a couple of positions
a. In case of injury
b. It actually helps you play your position better when you know the
assignments of those next to you.

“In the spring game, I think everybody noticed what kind of player Ross Homan is. He plays just like A.J. (Hawk). He’s tough, rough and gives 100 percent every play,” he said."

Didn't they let Hawk do a few practices at Mike a few years back? I think this practice is more prevalent than many think...

IIRC - Hawk, Carp and MDA all had reps at each others position for the reasons I mentioned above. Schelgs didn't because he did not have the speed to play outside.

But we know that a handful of present LB's have reps at two different LB positions:

Freeman has had reps at Will and Sam
Laurinitias has had reps at Sam and Mike
Hoobler has had reps at Mike and Leo
I believe Spitler has had reps at Mike and Sam (or Will)
Homan will be able to play Mike or Will
Kerr has had reps at Will and Mike
Terry has had reps at Sam and Leo

So we are talented, deep and versitle at LB. Which provides the coaches with a multitude of options as to who they play where.

I'll bookmark this post for the next time some yayhoo says, "So-and-so will move to XLB because the staff had him take reps there".

Talk about a ringing endorsement... It would be awesome to add Ross's name to the ever-growing list of great Buckeye linebackers! He's one of the guys I'm excited to see mature over the course of this season.
