Prolific offenses, stingy defenses set to collide

Coldwater averages 42 points per game. Versailles puts up 41. But don't expect the two teams to engage in an all-out offensive slugfest when they meet at H.B. Hole Field in Versailles on Friday. Recent history — and the defenses of the Cavaliers and Tigers — should see to that.
Nine of the past 16 games have been decided by single digits. The two teams have combined to average 32 points over the past 15 games. With Coldwater allowing a suffocating four points a game and Versailles a smothering six, points should come at a premium.
"We know that overall, defense wins games," Coldwater senior linebacker Ross Homan said. "The coaches are putting together great packages, and we're all doing our own individual jobs."
Both sides have plenty of hard work facing them on Friday.
Versailles running backs Curtis Wourms (91 carries for 519 yards), Russ Beisner (72-429) and Matt Murphy (59-416) are all averaging 5.7 yards or better per carry.
Homan (94-629) and Coldwater quarterback Steve Borger (58-331) both average 5.7 or better per carry as well.
Borger, working out of the Cavaliers' shotgun offense, has completed 64 percent of his passes (68 of 106) for 1,123 yards. He's thrown 15 touchdowns and just one interception. Versailles QB Tony McNeilan has completed 54 percent of his passes for eight TDs with just three interceptions.
"They're fast and quick and play good team defense," Versailles coach Al Hetrick said. "They mix it up like we do. You have to be prepared for everything."
Here we go again
Much like the 2003 game, this one is for the top ranking in the state — with a catch. Versailles enters No. 1 in the Division V state poll. Coldwater, ranked No. 2 in D-VI the past four weeks, moved into the top spot after Youngstown Cardinal Mooney lost. In 2003, the teams played in the same division. In that game Coldwater entered No. 1 in D-IV and Versailles was No. 2. The Tigers won 12-10.
While the rankings are nice, the computer points that come with the win, all but cementing the winner's spot in the playoffs, are what matter most. Oh, and that MAC title.
Extra points
• Versailles leads the series 27-19-2. The teams split last season. Coldwater won the regular-season game, 10-7, and Versailles won in the D-IV state semifinals 14-0.
• Coldwater's offense hasn't scored an offensive touchdown against Versailles in 10 quarters, dating back to 2003. The Cavs' TD last season came on an interception return.
• Both teams are 7-0, 5-0 in the Midwest Athletic Conference.
• Expect another sardine-room only crowd. About 4,335 packed Hole Field in 2003.
