LB Ross Homan (official thread)

It was great to see Coldwater play again. Ross was all over the place. The increasingly peeved announcer got sick of saying his name. At one point, it looked like Jerome's QB was going to get around the corner right in front of us (we sat on the Jerome side: better view) and Ross came out of nowhere, grabbed him around the shoulder pads, and flipped him onto his head. The collective hush after the collective GASP of the Jerome fans was hilarious. Every jaw dropped, including my own. I've never seen a linebacker read as well as he does and slash through blockers to the ball carrier like that at a HS level in my life. Should be fun to see him in a Buckeye uniform.

Coldwater rips St. Henry, wins backyard battle
From staff reports

COLDWATER — Take some Ross Homan, mix with a splash of Steve Borger and throw in a touch of late-game domination and out comes another Coldwater victory.

The Cavaliers exploded for 21 points in the fourth quarter Friday night as they remain perfect on the year with a 31-7 win over rival St. Henry in the Midwest Athletic Conference.

Homan, who finished with 125 yards on 22 carries, had two of the fourth-quarter scores. His one-yard dive early in the quarter and his three-yard blast midway through the quarter gave the Cavaliers (5-0, 3-0 MAC) some breathing room. His three-yard run late in the first half gave the Cavaliers a 10-0 lead.

Doug Griesdorn reeled in a 14-yard pass from Matt Hemmelgarn to give the Redskins (2-3, 1-3 MAC) their only score. Hemmelgarn was intercepted twice while completing only 36 percent of his passes.

Borger was 9-of-17 passing for 148 yards. Brady Geier had four catches and
Homan had two of his own.

Ross has been slowed down the past two weeks with minor turf toe. Still playing pretty well though. My sister's boyfriend flew out from California and caught the St Henry game with me. He couldn't blieve how quick Ross was reading plays and flying around.

He said "Ohio State is getting a good one." This kid grew up with about half his friends playing for De La Salle. He knows his ball.

Egon -- you were at the Jerome game I take it, I was not there. Bunch of my buddies were and said Ross took a sweep around the corner and layed into a DB popping the kid's helmet off. Did you see that play?

Coldwater 70, Parkway 0

ROCKFORD — Steve Borger was a perfect 10 for the Cavaliers.

The signal caller completed all 10 of his passes for 191 yards and five touchdowns to lead Coldwater in a pasting of Parkway in the MAC. The Cavs remain perfect, moving to 6-0, 4-0 in the conference.

Ryan Geier caught three passes for 72 yards and two scores.

The Panthers fall to 2-4, 2-3 in the MAC.

I had a chance to see Ross play last night for the first time. He looked very impressive against an extremely overmatched Parkway squad, who seemed to have no desire to even play the game on their homecoming night. We walked into the game about 2 minutes into the 1st quarter, and it was already 7-0. Ross scored on a short screen pass to the right and a 5 yard pitch to the left. It seemed as though Parkway was trying to get out of his way at times, to avoid the contact. There was a blocked punt, an INT returned about 60 yards for a TD, and another INT ran back that set up Homan's TD run. 35-0 at the end of the first quarter, and then I believe Ross was only playing defense after that, and maybe not at all. We left a few minutes later, with about 10 minutes left until halftime, 42-0 Coldwater. Hard to judge Ross's skills in a game like that, but he did impress.

Prolific offenses, stingy defenses set to collide

By Greg Billing
Dayton Daily News
Coldwater averages 42 points per game. Versailles puts up 41. But don't expect the two teams to engage in an all-out offensive slugfest when they meet at H.B. Hole Field in Versailles on Friday. Recent history — and the defenses of the Cavaliers and Tigers — should see to that.

Nine of the past 16 games have been decided by single digits. The two teams have combined to average 32 points over the past 15 games. With Coldwater allowing a suffocating four points a game and Versailles a smothering six, points should come at a premium.

"We know that overall, defense wins games," Coldwater senior linebacker Ross Homan said. "The coaches are putting together great packages, and we're all doing our own individual jobs."

Both sides have plenty of hard work facing them on Friday.

Versailles running backs Curtis Wourms (91 carries for 519 yards), Russ Beisner (72-429) and Matt Murphy (59-416) are all averaging 5.7 yards or better per carry. Homan (94-629) and Coldwater quarterback Steve Borger (58-331) both average 5.7 or better per carry as well.

Borger, working out of the Cavaliers' shotgun offense, has completed 64 percent of his passes (68 of 106) for 1,123 yards. He's thrown 15 touchdowns and just one interception. Versailles QB Tony McNeilan has completed 54 percent of his passes for eight TDs with just three interceptions.

"They're fast and quick and play good team defense," Versailles coach Al Hetrick said. "They mix it up like we do. You have to be prepared for everything."

Here we go again

Much like the 2003 game, this one is for the top ranking in the state — with a catch. Versailles enters No. 1 in the Division V state poll. Coldwater, ranked No. 2 in D-VI the past four weeks, moved into the top spot after Youngstown Cardinal Mooney lost. In 2003, the teams played in the same division. In that game Coldwater entered No. 1 in D-IV and Versailles was No. 2. The Tigers won 12-10.

While the rankings are nice, the computer points that come with the win, all but cementing the winner's spot in the playoffs, are what matter most. Oh, and that MAC title.

Extra points

• Versailles leads the series 27-19-2. The teams split last season. Coldwater won the regular-season game, 10-7, and Versailles won in the D-IV state semifinals 14-0.
• Coldwater's offense hasn't scored an offensive touchdown against Versailles in 10 quarters, dating back to 2003. The Cavs' TD last season came on an interception return.
• Both teams are 7-0, 5-0 in the Midwest Athletic Conference.
• Expect another sardine-room only crowd. About 4,335 packed Hole Field in 2003.
