LB Palaie Gaoteote (Official Thread)

I tend to disagree, PG wasn't NEEDED, he provides good depth. But we face few power running teams, most of CFB is spread and LBs have to cover or they become massive liabilities. I didn't think HTT was a necessity and I think the same about PG. With the Bullet, we only have 2 LBs anyway, which decreases the amount of LBs needed on the roster. I don't see everyone staying on the roster after PG transfers in

Usually we agree on a lot of stuff...I agree we didn't NEED PG. I think we have a very talented LB room. But PG brings another element that I think we don't have right now...high level size and athleticism. I totally get what you are saying though, we may only need 2 LBs at once with our defensive system. But I also think that if PG is healthy, then he is going to destroy it in our defense.

Would you compare PG to Browning?

My take on PG is this...I remember seeing a couple of live Bishop Gorman games on tv back when he was playing and I remember thinking that he was easily one of the best LB prospects that I had seen.

Fast forward to now, if you watch his USC film, you see flashes of that same player. Big, physical, quick, read-and-react skills, stops the run, rushes the passer. Everything you want in a LB. literally everything! One problem. He’s had several injuries.

So I’ll make this comment knowing people may not understand and I’ll get some backlash. But....PG’s ceiling, imo, is higher than To’oto’o’s. The problem is, his floor is lower. If PG stays healthy, and that’s a huge IF, Ohio State hit the lottery with this kid.

Only in the sense that there is huge upside but limited results if we're talking about the same stage in their respective careers. Browning was a more rangy LB that I think had a little more athleticism. PG is more compact and plenty athletic, but he fills a gap and just blows up the ball carrier. I'm thinking PG is more similar to Terjada Mitchell, or at least what he could be for us this year. I'm blanking on a good OSU comparison tbh and maybe it's because of the USC connection, but Ray Mauluga is the comparison that comes to mind if PG can stay healthy.

This perfectly describes my assessment of PG from HS up to this point. Different position and side of the ball, but Trey Sermon comes to mind with the transfer. Was obviously very talented as a recruit and showed flashes of brilliance, but was hampered by injuries. Here's to hoping PG ends up in the same conversation come this time next year.

Trey Sermon is a great example! I remember people saying “we have Master Teague! Why do we need Sermon?” Well.....nobody’s saying $#!+ after that 331 yard performance in the B10 Championship game.

I remember being wholly underwhelmed with Sermon after the first couple of games. Then something clicked and he went on a Zeke-like tear...

Raekwon McMillan???

Agreed. I think many of us thought that was after most of the season, TBH. Neither looked truly good, and it didn't help that they followed the magnificent year that Dobbins had.
I think I could hear the collective OSU fanbase' mouths hit the floor after the NW game. He looked like a completely new player

Raekwon is a pretty good example, good call.

I don’t think anything clicked for Sermon .. he just wasn’t getting the carries he needed to get in the groove and when he finally got to carry the load alone .. he was able to show who he was … the first few games he was getting 9-11 carries and they were coming sporadically through out a game .. soon as Teague left against Michigan State he was able to turn up

That was certainly a factor, but he clearly flipped a switch. I don’t think he broke a single arm tackle in the first 3 games…by the end of the year he was taking guys on and throwing safeties around.
