LB Palaie Gaoteote (Official Thread)

I'm excited to see Palaie & Proctor bringing the wood together in S&G... those two hit like trucks. Psyched to be able to bring someone of Palaie's caliber on to our team right before the season starts. Great opportunity for him with all 3 of our starting LBs and our first off-the-bench heading on to the next level

I think Palaie is a fantastic fit for our D, particularly with his speed, and should help bring some additional leadership to our inexperienced LBs

I'm inclined to agree. We didn't absolutely need PG, but he's legit and clearly will be a cultural fit or we wouldn't have made the offer.

Have Steele Chambers and Palaie Gaoteote IV joined Ohio State football’s linebacker corps?

Gaoteote has been listed in the OSU student directory for a few weeks but has not made an announcement about his transfer destination or been confirmed as a member by the team. Lettermen Row reported Monday (below) the former five-star prospect still needed to go through the NCAA waiver process to be eligible to play this fall.

The NCAA approved immediate eligibility for first-time transfers in April, as long as that player left their previous school academically eligible, informed their school of the transfer by July 1 and certified in writing they did not have contact with their new school prior to entering the transfer portal. The new school — Ohio State in this case — could also have its own academic or compliance issues that need to be hashed out before a transfer is official.

Even in this more wide-open world of college football, sources with direct knowledge of the situation indicated that Gaoteote would still need to file a waiver with the NCAA to be cleared to play at Ohio State this season. And until that situation is resolved and an appeal is approved, the proven hard-hitter at the Power Five level won’t be considered part of the Buckeyes roster or an option to bolster the thin depth at linebacker.

Heard a knock on him was too much weight gain for his play style leading to more of the injury issues. Hopefully Mick get's him in his optimum playing weight and he's allowed to play downhill the whole time. He and the rest of the LBs should have plenty of opportunities to make tackles with the number of blockers the DL is going to require

Understand he's not entirely 'cleared' by NCAA clearinghouse to play for tOSU. Soooo, is he allowed to practice onfield, in position room, etc while he's waiting for the NCAA bureaucracy to do it's job? Even if they say "no", and has to redshirt, he can still practice, no? Go Bucks! PS, Minny has the best rusher in the nation, so the LBs better be strapped in in game #1...

“He's paying his own way right now,” Day said on Friday at Big Ten Media Days. “And then we're going to hear from the NCAA about his eligibility here maybe in a few weeks, and then we'll go from there.”

  • On Palaie Gaoteote: "Too early to tell. He still has to get a waiver, so we're kind of just taking it slow with him." He'll be put on scholarship if/when he gets the waiver. He doesn't think they'll get an answer for "another week or so." They don't want to put him with the first-team or second-team until they know whether he'll play for the Buckeyes this season.

At least he's practicing:
