LB Mike Mitchell (transfer to Texas Tech, transfer to Southeastern FL)

Hmm, guess I'm in the minority here (although we are debating a minor detail). I suppose I just don't know anything about Johnson's football IQ yet...to be a MIKE, you have to "get it" schematically and be the leader of the defense. Johnson very well could be that person but all I know about him so far is he is a great athlete and a very good LB. On the other hand, Mike seems to have a great football IQ and has been learning the game from a young age. Plus my thought is a MIKE has to cover more field, why not utilize his speed that way? OLB's cover 1/3 of the field essentially, while a MIKE has more responsibility and field to cover. Plus, if none of this convinces you...his name is MIKE!

All that aside, we are often in a nickel package with a Star on the field, so it isn't that often that we'll see a typical MIKE alignment

Not to get too far off track but on Trey:

"Ohio State is getting an SEC-caliber player, which is what Urban Meyer is trying to bring to his Ohio State teams," Central Gwinnett coach Todd Wofford told the AJC.

"It's the same format that Brian Kelly did with Notre Dame and their defense - bring as many kids from the south up north, and have them outrun the offenses."

"With Trey, Ohio State is getting a kid that is going to be ready to play from the first day. He's not into all the rankings, the media staff and 'me, me, me' things. He's a student of the game. When he talks to college coaches, they come back to me and tell me it's like talking to another coach."

Says a lot about his football IQ, IMO. Part of the reason I think he starts at MIKE. I think Mitchell has the makings of a SAM/MIKE combo.

Ok, so Trey can play MLB and let's but Mike at the Star position vs running teams!

His measurables and speed can more than handle it. If he can cover, holy crap what a defensive alignment we can get on the field. Won't lose any size vs power teams. Could be interesting. Boren played LB last year so you never know.

WEB EXCLUSIVE: Dot the i: Mitchell chooses to play football at Ohio State
BY Kevin Hageland, [email protected]
Published: Wednesday, January 9, 2013
Prestonwood Christian Academy senior linebacker Mike Mitchell has known for some time he would have the opportunity to play Division I football.

The biggest mystery was where Mitchell would go.

The 6-foot-4, 216-pounder made that decision Saturday afternoon at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl as he selected Ohio State during the game, which took place in front of 40,133 people at the Alamodome in San Antonio and was broadcast live on NBC.

"This is an amazing feeling," Mitchell said. "It is something you work a lot of your life for and to finally commit feels like a big accomplishment."

Mitchell, who was one of six players to announce a commitment during the game, had his finalists down to Ohio State, Texas A&M and Oregon prior to Saturday, but even his parents were in the dark as to which school he would pick.

"Maybe we can get it out of him on the ride down there," said Ken Mitchell, Mike's father and a former linebacker for the Atlanta Falcons, last week.

The Prestonwood linebacker's parents were not successful.

"He made us wait until commitment time also," Mr. Mitchell said.

But while the commitment didn't come until Saturday, the wheels may have been set in motion years prior. The Mitchell family grew up in Florida and watched the Gators win multiple NCAA National Championships under head coach Urban Meyer. Meyer took over at Ohio State in 2012.

"Obviously there are a lot of factors at work, but I think that aspect played a part," Mr. Mitchell said. "Mike watched Florida growing up and always liked coach Meyer and was then able to build a relationship with him."

Other sites have said both of those LBer commits are true LBers who realistically could see a good amount of game action from day 1, where as some of the LBers from last years class (Marcus and Perkins) are freak athletes we're trying to mold into LBers. It will be interesting to see how those 2 guys from the '12 class progress, because the 2 coming in look ready to play.

.

The downside about molding athletes into LBs is that it can take a while. The upside is that once you do it you have a heck of a LB. Some folks seem inclined to dismiss the entire Frosh LB group from last year because they couldn't beat out Boren. That is a mistake.

Yes, especially Marcus. I would be surprised to see him as a starter anytime this season, but also surprised if he doesn't see the field in situational packages (probably being an extra rusher on passing plays).

I don't wanna get off topic here in the Mitchell thread, but I'm not even sure if Jamal is still a LB. In the Illinois game, he went in at LEO. While Perkins, Perry, and Williams lined up at LB. And before the Purdue game, I saw him warming up with the DL.
