They seem to like Perry at SLB. He and Marcus battle it out this year on that side. All of this IHMO.

I see a MIKE all the way. He has it between the ears and has a great football pedigree, plus fantastic instincts. Moreover, he has excellent speed and his length gives him so much range sideline-to-sideline...he is going to be a nightmare for any runner trying to get to the edge. Or any runner in his gap for that matter.

Seems to have good football instincts and the physical tools are off the charts.
One thing I notice with him though is that he seems to tackle a little too high. Maybe it's his height or whatever, but IDK... there's just something odd about his game. If you watch those 2012 highlights, almost every single tackle is an arm / drag down tackle. I think the MLB spot is going to come down to Williams / Crowell / Mitchell / Johnson, but I honestly don't see much of a chance that Mitchell starts right away. He just seems a little bit raw to me, but his frame + his instincts + his ridiculous physical tools could eventually produce one damn good all-around linebacker. I think he'd be a better SLB or even LEO prospect personally, but they've got enough guys there.
I just think people should maybe consider lowering their expectations for Mike a little. I remember reading a lot of the same stuff about Sabino and Grant.

That is one area of improvement for Mike...he plays a little high but alot of times he simply out-runs the play and doesn't break his feet down. If he breaks his feet down and trusts his lateral movement, he will not have to use arm tackles so frequently. He gets away with it now and sometimes will at the next level with his speed and long arms (aka his range I mentioned) but he will have to work on playing under control a little more. Notice he makes tackles at the core and legs when he is under control and makes a much more sound tackle. Luckily this is a technique issue and easily fixed.
That being said, I have no idea if he will start...obviously that is very tough for a freshman. However, we did thrust a senior FB in the middle over the guys Mitchell has to beat. Even if he does win out the spot, I think (or hope at least) that most here know there will be some serious bumps and mistakes along his learning curve, even if he does display flashes of brilliance. You hope someone steps up but if there is a deficiency in leadership and instincts again at MIKE, I could see superior athleticism and size winning out with the expectations of mistakes to be made.

Other sites have said both of those LBer commits are true LBers who realistically could see a good amount of game action from day 1, where as some of the LBers from last years class (Marcus and Perkins) are freak athletes we're trying to mold into LBers. It will be interesting to see how those 2 guys from the '12 class progress, because the 2 coming in look ready to play.
Of coarse, playing LBer in this defensive scheme is a man's job. It seemed like our new defensive alignments put a lot of stress on the LBers and forced them to make plays in the open field more so than in years past. If you're having trouble grasping it from a mental standpoint, you could have all the physical tools in the world and still be a non-factor or even a liability out there (see Curtis Grant).

Hmm, guess I'm in the minority here (although we are debating a minor detail). I suppose I just don't know anything about Johnson's football IQ yet...to be a MIKE, you have to "get it" schematically and be the leader of the defense. Johnson very well could be that person but all I know about him so far is he is a great athlete and a very good LB. On the other hand, Mike seems to have a great football IQ and has been learning the game from a young age. Plus my thought is a MIKE has to cover more field, why not utilize his speed that way? OLB's cover 1/3 of the field essentially, while a MIKE has more responsibility and field to cover. Plus, if none of this convinces you...his name is MIKE!
All that aside, we are often in a nickel package with a Star on the field, so it isn't that often that we'll see a typical MIKE alignment
