LB Mike Mitchell (transfer to Texas Tech, transfer to Southeastern FL)

Biggest upgrade I've seen in Mike's game over the last year is he seems to have so much less wasted motion. Watching film from last year Mike would make plays all over the field but there seemed to be a lot of energy wasted because of technique that needed improvement. Now he runs so much more compact yet still flies around to the football.
Wasn't that the same thing with RDS early this past year? Can't wait for Spring practice to start.

No doubt he's not going to redshirt, barring injury. (knock on wood)

Is it me or did we recruit an entire class that should excel on special teams in the very least? Mike is going to push the incumbents, thats for sure. He already has elite speed and getting some time around Shazier should help him learn.

If the learning curve for Jamal Marcus levels out this year, its seriously on at LB.

Scout - Ohio State commit in Action

1/7

Mike Mitchell of Prestonwood Christian High School in Plano Texas is the nation's No. 2 ranked middle linebacker. He announced his commitment to Ohio State on Saturday at the Army All-America Bowl.

Mitchell had a strong week of practice at the Army Bowl and was probably looking forward to playing against a higher level of competition than what he faced week in and week out at Prestonwood Christian.

While his level of competition in high school may have been questionable, there was no questioning Mitchell's ability to dominate it. At 6'3 and 220 pounds with a 4.4 forty, Mitchell is one of the most physically gifted players in the nation. He doesn't play down to his level of competition, he dominates it.

IMHO, poor tackling angles were a huge problem for the Buckeye defense last season. I think a lot of the poor, and missed tackles resulted from the poor tackling angles. It's nice to read that Mitchell does not waste a lot of effort.

Along with the "kill shot" vice "wrap up" tackles. One of the Cal RB's long TDs was because a DB tried to blast him instead of wrapping up...same with Hairlice's TD run in The Game where two defenders failed to wrap up simultaneuously. Those are just two instances that I can think off right off the bat...

Either one of the OSU tacklers would have brought Robinson down, combined they sort of kept him upright.

Yea that was just awkward, hitting each side of him at the EXACT same time. I don't chalk that one up to poor tackling.

If one of them had wrapped up, Hairlice was down. Watch the replay if you have the game recorded...both tried to blow him up and neither even made an attempt to grab him.

If by neither, you mean Travis Howard had both arms around Robinson, only to be stiff-armed by Bryant's latest killshot whiff, then yes... NEITHER did.

Very true. He also seemed to be caught flat footed in open space too often, leading to unnecessary drag down tackles. In the AA game he was much improved in both areas. Incredible physical skill set and still a lot of room for improvement makes for a bright future for Mike.

(I still see more of a SAM linebacker than a true middle. I know Trey is quite a bit smaller, but I actually see him as a more pure MLB prospect. At least we'll get to see how that ends up).
