Linebacker recruit Mike Mitchell has all the tools at a position where Ohio State needs help

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Ohio State recruit Mike Mitchell is ? different.

?It's a unique family,? linebackers coach Luke Fickell said.

Mitchell, from Plano, Texas, is the sixth of nine children, all with M names -- Missi, Mandi, Monte, Matt, Michelle, Mike, Mickey, McKinley and Morgan.

?His dad is a very unique guy,? Fickell said. Mitchell's father, Ken, played in the NFL with the Atlanta Falcons and has climbed Mt. Everest, but Ken says Mike gets his athleticism from his mother, Candy.

?He's going to bring some very unique tools,? Fickell said.

Ken Mitchell said his son didn't play football until eighth grade, yet was rated as a five-star recruit and proved to be a monster at testing combines. After more than 15 events around the country known as Nike SPARQ combines test players in the 40-yard dash, vertical jump, an agility shuttle and a kneeling medicine ball toss, Mitchell's score advanced him to a 10-player combine final. There, he didn't just win the competition, his total score was the best ever. It included a 4.39 time in the 40 by the 6-4 linebacker that beat the running backs and corners he was competing against.

?I think he's more than just a combine guy,? Fickell said.

Contd....

You have to marvel at an athlete who is one of the best in a speed event and a field event -and we aren't talking about a minor state here - this is the vast and talented state of Texas.

This guy is exceptional in terms of all of his meaurables. That doesn't mean that he can play football as a freshman at Ohio State, but if Curtis Grant falters, it wouldn't surprise me to see him right there in the middle of the Silver Bullets during the season.

I suggested this on another thread and drew some scoffs and "huhs". It depends on how quickly he can adjust to big time CFB, whether he can be instinctive, and whether he can make plays. But if he can be/is those things, and Grant can't/isn't, he will be given an opportunity.
