LB Mike Mitchell (transfer to Texas Tech, transfer to Southeastern FL)

Dear god, we need Linebackers.

That's actually an understatement. Our coaches feel that Zac Boren, with one week of practice, is better than Klein and Grant. Maybe Zac should have been a linebacker from Day 1 and Klein a fullback. Unfortunately, it looks like Grant is taking the career path of Sabino: taking 4 years in the program to develop into a "functional" linebacker. If Mike Mitchell doesn't commit to OSU, he obviously doesn't value playing time as highly as other factors.

Playing Boren at backer isn't a bad recruiting stunt...

Hope we land him, but everyone is fooling themselves if they think a freshman linebacker will contribute as a freshman(other than special teams). Big Kat was an exception!

I completely read that post in my mind with the Ricky Powers voice. Kudos bar to you.

A.J. Hawk made significant contributions as a freshman filling in 2002 when we were banged up at linebacker and played very well. Especially remember him playing a lot in the Penn State game. Mitchell doesn't need to start, but we do need guys that can come in and be serviceable as freshman if their number gets called.

But in reality there are still very few true frosh that come in and help teams immediately. If that were the case, our defense would be much better. But as it stands we don't have any frosh making much impact at this point. I'm all for getting Mitchell, but my hopes aren't very high that he'll contribute much past special teams and in some blow outs. Hopefully I'm wrong though

Credit for a tackle is one thing. I was not impressed with his play on defense. Our d is a disaster.

I don't think anyone believes that Boren was the next incarnation of #36. If anything, the fact that he led the team in tackles is proof of the epic proportions of the disaster.

There are two practical exigencies of the epic disaster:

1) A freshman does not need to be Andy Katzenmoyer to get significant playing time. They need only be functional, and only just.
2) The coaches will take desperate measures to patch the holes.

Boren being used to patch a hole is an example #2; and while recruits are sure to have noticed, it was done to patch a hole, not to lure recruits.

Refocusing on #1 for a moment, it bears repeating: Incoming freshman only need to be functional, barely functional, to get playing time. I hope they notice.
