LB Mike D'Andrea (official thread)

If he petitions the NCAA, I wonder if there is any weight given to the fact the he missed the last 5 or so games of the 2003 season. It seems like he is definitely over the stated playing time to get the medical RS, but are other things considered?

Any updates on the D'Andrea situation?

If he doesn't get it, has anyone ever heard of someone taking a redshirt midwayt hru their career so that they can have a year as a starter? I think it sounds a little crazy, but if it were me I'd consider it if that would give me a year of starting time rather than being a reserve all year.

And if someone went down with injury, they could always burn the redshirt.

This is a totally wild idea, I was just curious if anyone had any examples of this happening in the past.

Chad Pennington did something like that at Marshall. He played his freshman year. Then redshirted his second year because they had a senior transfer in. He then played the next 3 years or something like that. I also had a buddy that was prop 48. He redshirted his second year so that he would have 3 years left even though he was better than a few of the starters.
I still think D'Animal is our best MLB, but is unlucky with the injuries. I would love to see one great (healthy) year out of him.

It was a while back, but I seem to remember Joe Montgomery taking a red-shirt on what would have been his true senior year or maybe it was Saun Penny? Regardless, I remember it being the players decision because he felt he could better compete the following year also it was under Coop. Maybe somebody with a better memory can confirm this.

Well- Joe Montgomery had that terrible knee injury (Minnesota?) and I think he might have not palyed the whol next season... that might be alittle different.

Yep, ntd.

Dusty Dvoracek got the redshirt. That was a real joke of a decision. Apparently the NCAA was afraid of a lawsuit, otherwise I can't see how it was justfied.

I would love to see Mike redshirt will all the depth at LB, but the reason I don't think it happens is because he may be the best LB on the team after Hawk. He was really starting to come on strong and with another spring, he will be a terror so I really can't see him riding the pine for a year.

with all due respect to Schlegal... D'Andrea should have been in the middle from day one... I felt there was dramatic difference and improvement in the whole defense when Mike was in the lineup... I love Bobby Carpenter.. I think he is outstanding... and without bias, I honestly believe that THE BEST LINEBACKER at EVERY one of the LB spots.. in the country... could be on the same team next year... The voters would never do it... but Hawk, D'Andrea and Carpenter could all be first team AA...

i agree, it would be a very good idea. A. he wouldn't have to worry about sharing time with schlagel and B. (and more importantly) he won't have hawk the all american getting all the press throughout the season. even if he beats out schlagel for the position, he is still going to be overshadowed by hawk no matter what he does.

he takes a redshirt and comes back the year everyone else leaves he becomes the "only" big name. which means the announcers are going to be talking all about him. he doesn't have to outdo anyone, just has to play to his ability. better for the team, and worlds better for his likelyhood status when/if he goes pro. as odd as it sounds, so long as he comes back 100%, this injury may have been the best thing to happen for his pro prospects. no way no how he gets more media press than hawk.
Another option is to run a 3-4 part of the time. We would need some bigger DE, but would allow both of them to play at the same time. Having Pitcock, Patterson, Green/Penton/Abdallah would be a big DL with the backers providing blitz support. Would give the other teams something to think about anyway...

Parallels to The D'Andrea RedShirt Case?

Recently the NCAA refused to grant a medical redshirt to the injury plagued Cal WR Chase Lyman -- he had one full half more of football than the rules allowed.

If the NCAA is consistent in their review of medical redshirt appeals this may make '05 D'Andrea's last season as a Buckeye.

Lyman went over NCAA playing limit

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) -- California wide receiver Chase Lyman's appeal for a sixth season of eligibility was denied by the NCAA on Thursday.

Lyman played about 30 minutes more than the limit allowed by the NCAA's standard guidelines to earn another year of eligibility. A player usually must miss at least 80 percent of two seasons to qualify for an extra season.

He had operations on both knees an ankle, hamstrings and a hand, and an appendectomy. Cal hoped Lyman would qualify under an NCAA rule allowing the guidelines to bend for extraordinary circumstances.

Lyman was plagued by injuries throughout his career with the Golden Bears, catching just 54 passes for 1,089 yards and nine touchdowns. He starred in the Insight Bowl as a junior, catching five passes for 149 yards in Cal's victory over Virginia Tech.

He caught 14 passes for 414 yards and five touchdowns in his first four games last season, but was lost for the year with a torn left knee ligament in Cal's loss to Southern California.
There is still hope -- for this assumes the NCAA is consistent.
