LB Mike D'Andrea (official thread)

flybuckeye said:
I heard he tore his ACL during the NCSt. game and has been playing hurt. I was at the game so I don't know if the announcers said anything about this, but as of Friday he's out for the season.

I don't think you can bear weight on a knee with a torn ACL, but maybe it was just partially torn.

Injury Questions

They announced D'Andrea had surgery this week, that everything went well and he will be back for next year. Was there ever an announcement as to what kind of knee injury it was?

Also, has there been any word on Justin's injury?

D'Andrea

Just got back from the game...

noticed Whitner went out late in 2Q and didn't return, he was holding his knee, and later had ice wrapped around it. Did they mention anything about his injury on TV or radio?

Also, apparantly Jay Richardson didn't play due to injury as well, any word on #99?

Lastly, D'andrea was just sitting there on the bench or limping around on his crutches hardly even paying attention to the game. I wish we had more guys like Dustin fox, who try to help out in other ways when they are injured and can't contribute on the field.

Peace

Medical Hardship Waiver

If a student-athlete suffers a season-ending injury or illness after competing in a limited amount of competition during a particular academic year, he/she may qualify for a medical hardship waiver which would allow him/her an additional season of competition during the five-year period of eligibility. To qualify for a medical hardship:

  • the student-athlete’s injury or illness must occur in one of the four seasons of intercollegiate competition or subsequent to the first day of classes in the student-athlete’s senior year in high school;
  • the injury or illness must occur prior to the completion of the first half of the playing season that concludes with the NCAA championship in that sport and must result in incapacity to compete for the remainder of that playing season; and
  • the injury or illness must occur when the student-athlete has not participated in more than two contests or dates of competition or 20% of the institution’s scheduled contests or dates of competition in his/her sport (whichever number is greater).
I would say no as well, I know that he played in the first four games. Not sure if exceptions are made, but according to a strict reading of the rule above, then no. Unfortunately.
