LB Marcus Freeman (HC Notre Dame, Constant Backtracker)

So we’re all sick of Urban hiring buddies who are not qualified for their jobs. The answer is to hire someone just because he played here and give him Co-DC after less than 2 years as a DC a Cincinnati?

How is “Urban’s friend” any different than “former player” here? Is this truly because you guys think he’s the best man available or just because we all love former players?
That applies to Chris Spielman or James Laurinaitis. Marcus meanwhile is doing a really nice job at UC on and off of the field.

We want Freeman because his LBs can fucking tackle and in general aren’t a shit show. You don’t have to give him a Co-DC position but I’d throw money at him just to have competent LB play again.

Although I do believe that Spiels would be an awesome coach. And awesome POTUS, SCOTUS, Senator, Governor, Motivational Speaker, Pizza Delivery man, Plumber, Electrician, and most other occupations.
Spiels would make a good coombs. Only sort of a position coach for awhile but such infectious energy and effort that it trickles down to everything

The other factor is UCF has had a good system in place for that offense for a few years now. I watched a little bit of the game and it looked like the defense at least tackled well and were hitting hard when they could...which is a lot more than I’ve seen out of tOSU back seven the past two years.
Fixed it for you.

Only reason we were good in 2016 was we had 4 first rounders in the secondary, 2 more high draft picks at LB, and a deep DL.

Anyone could coach a group like that and win. All we had to do was play man.

Former player that has a love of this team and University ingrained in their heart - doesn't hurt that he is a young and upcoming coach who has had some great results in a short time with 2nd tier recruits.

this.
i see coach Freeman at Colerain alot. the Colerain staff and players absolutely love him.
I like him because he has swagger and charisma. reminds me a little of Mike Tomlin that one year he spent at UC.

My son has worked with him the past two years at their camp. He absolutely loves him. I know this isn't a huge sample, but we have been to quite a few camps and not all coaches are created equal. The stuff that Freeman has shown him and the way he has treated him even though my son has zero shot at playing at UC has been terrific. Marcus loves football and loves helping kids or he wouldn't have taken the extra time and effort he has with my son like he has.

For me, it's that we've got to do something, his resume, while not terribly long, shows strong results (dogs bite as pups ...), he's apparently young, energetic, and charismatic, he knows Ohio and Ohio State, and I don't follow the world of college football enough to know who else is out there. So yes, there is a familiarity bias, but I also agree with what Jwinslow says below. I too would rather bring him in as a dedicated LB coach (and maybe see if Rutgers cans Ash), but I have doubts that we can manage that.

Alex Grinch was a DC for only two years at Washington St and people seems happy with him. Of course, maybee our defensive woes this year are all his fault.

I still say bring Freeman in as a Co-DC/LB coach. It sounds like he is well respected in the Cincinnati area already. He is learning under a pretty good defensive guy in Fickle. Hire him before someone else does.

WSU's defense has declined slightly since Grinch left (#16 -> #32).
Ours has declined significantly since Grinch and Taver Johnson got here (#9 -> #67), as Billy Davis joined in 2017.

TOTAL DEFENSE, WSU
2015 #84
2016 #62 (+Grinch)
2017 #16 (Grinch)
2018 #32 (-Grinch)

TOTAL DEFENSE, OSU
2015 #9 (Ash/Fickell)
2016 #6 (Schiano/Fickell)
2017 #9 (Schiano -Fickell/+B.Davis)
2018 #67 (Schiano/Grinch B.Davis -Coombs/+T.Johnson)

I find it difficult to blame Schiano alone for our ridiculous decline this year given he helped preside over 2 top 10 defenses.

It seems to me that the successive losses of Ash, Fickell, and Coombs created a vacuum and allowed a shift in defensive strategy to whatever Grinch and Davis are selling. This transition appears to be going poorly...

the coaching transition had a lot to do with it no doubt, but the player turnover can't be ignored either.

2018 was a year where the roster turnover and injury to Bosa created a pool of players (especially in the back 7) that just weren't capable of being a top 10 defense (at least at this point in their careers) when you mixed in something not being right with the coaching as well.
