Mili said the same thing very early in the thread, and really we have just as much of an immediate need at SF as LB, plus I don't know if the learning curve is quite as steep back there--I'd love to see Larry and JamO at safety with Mitchell as nickelback, since I feel we've got next year's starting LB corps already on roster.

that could get interesting...

just how would Oregon say "at tOSU, with the LBs they have and the LBs coming in, you won't see the field"?
because that could exactly be the thing Grant takes as a personal challenge to say "watch me"

this one intriques me... for some reason, I think this kid could really be a big success with tOSU... I think the coaches will quickly refine his technique and we'll have another Na'il Diggs

I don't think anything went wrong. I think after he made those comments he agreed to visit Oregon, probably in case he did not get through OSU's admissions. As I recall he made those comments when he was still waiting to hear. Despite having what is being called a great visit, I think he is doing the right thing and honoring his commitment to visit Oregon next weekend. I think all signs are pointing towards OSU.

Because someone has taken issue with this statement, anonymously of course, I will explain it with the hopes that it clears up any confusion. A well respected forum poster analyzed video highlights of Grant and mentioned that he tackled high, which might have cut it at the JUCO level but perhaps would not at the Big Ten level. Matt Wilhelm, who excelled here, had a tendency to tackle high. Having the tendency to tackle high isn't the be all, end all, and that's all I was saying. It was in no way a reference to substance use, which is the only thing I can imagine the person who dinged me incorrectly inferred.

Put simply, I'm in the camp that thinks Grant is a stud and can come in and contribute right away.

I don't think anything went wrong. He has proclaimed us his leader. Let's not forget that JT seems to like to tell kids to go home and talk the committment thoughts over with family as well. For all we know, Grant could go home and think about it some more, then cancel his visit to Oregon this weekend. Who knows? But we should definitely not be out on the ledges or assuming something went wrong because he has left without verballing (supposedly)... Let's just wait and see what Larry decides before we start thinking about what (if anything) went wrong...

By "playing high" I meant the way he attacks and slips blockers...tackling high is not an issue and many coaches today, John Bunting is one, teaches players to tackle high to emphasize visual contact.

I think he was referring to the 'negativeness' of that post... Long after the post you referenced, Grant said he would, at a minimum, go home to SF and talk things over with his brother. There should have been no expectation of a commitment.

Most likely, nothing went wrong due to the fact that we are the 'clear leader'...

FWIW, there is a potential meltdown brewing over this subject on another sites premium board. I cannot wait for NLOID day to pass...
