LB Larry Grant (Official Thread)

Grant could possibly come right in and provide depth at LB, having D'Andrea and Freeman coming off injuries, he could prove to be a great addition next year. Certainly his size and speed is impressive, his experience is also a big plus.

Lets hope his visit goes well this weekend....

Keep in mind that Kerr is really our only true WILL with any game experience, and even he started out as a MIKE at Indiana. Freeman and Laurinaitis both played SAM and MDA is a MIKE. Grant looks like a prototypical WILL, so he could easily step into a starting role early on.

not to steal any of 21's thunder, but I don't know if this kid can come in and start right away. watch his film and you will see a great playmaker using techniques that he can get away with at the JUCO level, but not in the Big 10. I'm sure the coaches will be able to turn him into a fine LB, but just don't be surprised if it doesn't happen as quickly as some of us would like...

Very true 45... But it can only help that he would be here for sping ball as well...

I think the jury is still out here. If the staff wants him we will take him. I would think he would have a great chance of getting some playing, just b/c the door is open right now for the Will.

I am with Grad with some of his concerns, but if he doesnt play this year, he could always take a redshirt and have two more years left. He is very very fast for a lb tho, and you can't teach speed.

you don't teach 4.4 .. altho maybe with reynolds on board... maybe... but if he's 4.4 before reynolds, who knows what he is AFTER Reynolds...

but when you get a recruit with tools, then it's up to the coaching staff to refine the product... I take this kid all day long...

depending on how things go.. he stays at LB... or I move him to safety... or I beef him up and move him to DE.. whatever... but do I EVER feel we have too many LBs - never... not with 4.4 speed

Larry Grant - I'd love to see you in scarlet and grey

Makes little sense to look at Grant as a RS candidate.

When a coach who does not recruit JUCOs loses three starting LBs and brings in a JUCO LB it adds up that he is looking for experience. If he can't play next year he never will.

If Gibson and Grant came on board, that would give up five LBs and no way would we take a sixth in McCarthy.

It doeesn't just give us 5 LBs in this class, it gives us TWELVE in the program.

Somebody is moving.

Speed is great - it really is. But a defender has to: (a) know how to use his speed to get in position to make the play, and then (b) he has to make the play once he gets into position (assuming he does so in the first place). What some are suggesting is that Grant needs to rely less on his speed (and other natural talents), and learn to become more of a football player. Once he gets his technique/"understanding of the game" in order, then his speed could take him to the next level. If he can't develop his football skills, then no amount of natural ability will make him a great player. There are lots of great athletes out there who can't play a lick of football.

Compare Larry Grant to another Grant, Cie Grant - no comparison: speed is about the same, Cie was/is a much better football player. Can Larry get to that level in the next 2 or 3 years? Answer that question, JT might have a job for you. :wink2:

I'm actually glad you did because I forgot to post my thoughts after I PMd a few of you...anyway, this where I stand:
Watched the films on Rivals...Not overly impressed...he plays high and could get away with that at the JUCO level. Even in his highlight films, there were clips of him giving up solid ground to OL instead of scraping low and cutting the angle. He met the OL head on instead of throwing a flipper. Speed is obvious and he seems to be a solid hitter...but I did not see enough to tell if he is as solid of a tackler. I'm sure some good coaching can rectify these issues, but for the folks on the boards thinking he is going to walk in here and play, I would have to disagree for now. However, speed kills....so you never know.

I got to say, I think you nailed it...this kid has the size and speed to be great. And those are two things that are tough to teach. Hopefully some time with Fick will improve his technique and he will be able to contribute next year. But to annoint this kid as the starter before he has even stepped foot on campus is a little premature.
